Edsel are to make available again – via a new deluxe multi-disc package – their previously released CDs of Marc Bolan’s home demos, alternate takes, unused and abandoned songs, and unfinished recordings, first issued individually back in the mid-1990s

Unchained: Home Recordings & Studio Outtakes 1972-1977 contains the now out-of-print eight CDs in full, in a deluxe 12-inch book package which boasts brand new artwork and updated Mark Paytress annotations.

This new set can be ordered via the Official T. Rex Store (Europe only – but the first 500 come with a free seven-inch single of Over The Flats / Meadows Of The Sea). Alternatively, you can pick it up from Amazon UK (without the seven-inch) which is currently the only option for those outside Europe.

  1. I am curious how many pages are inside. I already have the individual jewel case volumes and the hard cover digipak, which I bought new at a very low price. From memory the commentary in both sets were basically the same. The digipak notes may even have been edited down from the individual jewel case editions.

  2. Base.com only £44.99 with FREE P&P – £20 CHEAPER than Amazon! They usually deliver on/by Release Day too, (which Amazon charge extra for unless you pay £70 per year for Prime)!

    Base.com are also on CashBack sites like TopCashBack, (only 2.02% but better than nothing)! They only charge your card once the order is ready to ship & it’s really easy to cancel, (simply click the cancel button on the order details page), in case the price goes down lower elsewhere, (which I can’t see being likely but you never know)!

  3. Trev, I agree the packaging does look great, but I just hate these LP sized box sets, so difficult to display. I prefer the book format or the midi boxes, like the Electric Warrior, Tears For Fears boxes.

    1. I have the Tanx/Zinc Alloy 12×12 and love it! Large pages with large photos and tons of 45 rpm sleeve covers instead of the teeny tiny pics in CD booklets. The size is a problem for your CD collection but the hard cover book style fits nicely on my bookshelves where most of my box sets reside (as bookends!).

  4. I think Mark Paytress is great and he writes very well on Bolan, but…
    All 12 of Marc Bolan’s studio albums and at least 6 box sets, as well as numerous compilations all have sleeve notes by him. It would be nice to read something from a different perspective for a change.

    1. Bob. The Guardian Rock Critic, Alex Petridis has done excellent sleevenotes for For All The Cats-The Best Of Marc Bolan And T.Rex./ UMC Demon . Highly recommended.

  9. This box set was actually released about 5 years ago but in a small shelf friendly digi pack format.
    To be honest it is more T.Rex than most people will ever need, and I speak as a huge fan. There was a 2 CD highlights of this released years ago, a much better option.

    2. The eight discs were originally released individually in the mid-late 1990’s on Edsel and became increasingly harder to find… some volumes and years more so than others.
      A “best of” 2CD collection called “Work In Progress” came out in 2003 which featured some of the highlights from the eight volume set but missing some solid material.
      In late 2010, all eight discs were reissued in one deluxe casebound digipak, book package called “Unchained: Unreleased Recordings 1972 -1977” but the majority of the print run was consumed in the Sony DADC warehouse fire of 2011. Since then, copies of the rare original individual releases and the 2010 digipak, book set have changed hands for foolish
      amounts of money, and shithead sellers on Ebay offer to pirate the entire set!
      This new 12” x 12” bound book set package looks much better than its previous edition! I look forward to the new artwork and rarely seen photos! ROCK ON!
