NewsTangerine Dream / The Official Bootleg Series Vol One / 4CD box
Esoteric Recordings’ are set to release a first volume of an ‘Official Bootleg Series’ by German electronic legends Tangerine Dream.
This four-CD box set will be put out on the label’s Reactive imprint and will feature recordings made at Reims Cathedral, France in December 1974 and at the Mozarthalle, Mannheim, West Germany in October 1976.
The four hours of music has been compiled with the official approval of Tangerine Dream and has been re-mastered from the ‘best available sources’. The set comes with an illustrated booklet with a new essay.
The Official Bootleg Series Vol One is released on 25 September 2015.

The concert at the Mozarthalle in Mannheim is another fine example of the excellence of this incarnation of Tangerine Dream on stage. This official 4CD clamshell boxed set has been re-mastered from the best available sources and includes an illustrated booklet with a new essay.

This sounds great to me. But what made them choose the title “The Official Bootleg Series Volume One”, given that they released a box set in 2003 called “The Bootleg Box Set Volume One”? Are they desperate to confuse us? Incidentally, the concerts in this new set aren’t the same as the ones already released in the “Bootleg Box Set” series…but then, you have to wonder why they weren’t. Those had excellent sound quality…do these?
Love the cover though. Much better than the inappropriate wood cuts on the previous boxes.
Whether this forthcoming set is cause for delight or for facepalm rather depends on the quality of the remasters.
If someone has managed to go back to the original tapes of these bootlegs, redigitised them and restored them sensitively with modern tools, they will be well worth getting.
If, however, someone has simply taken some old 1990s ‘Tangerine Dream’ fan-swapped bootlegs off a bit torrent and done fancy sleeve for them (as has happened before with Esoteric’s TDream releases), I think I might cry.
And in any case, we know that the band recorded all their shows themselves, from the soundboard… why are they not delving into that archive rather than these dodgy bootlegs recorded under someone’s raincoat at the back of the auditorium?

It will be interesting to compare these with the Tangerine Tree (et al) releases from the pre-torrent days. I suspect many TD fans will already own good versions, so how many will pay for a marginal or nil improvement? I will hold fire for informed reviews.
