NewsTears For Fears / Songs From The Big Chair pure audio blu-ray
The Tears For Fears Songs From The Big Chair reissue will finally be released in just over a week’s time.
As well as the 6-disc super deluxe box set (and other editions) the 1985 album is also being released on the Pure Audio hi-res blu-ray audio format. This will arguably be the best ever Pure Audio to be released since the format launched in late 2012 because it includes three versions of the blockbuster album; the original 1985 mix remastered, a brand new stereo remix for 2014 and a 5.1 surround sound remix.
Renowned songwriter, musician, producer and remix engineer Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree) has created the new mixes. Wilson has produced critically acclaimed surround sound remixes in recent years for groups such as Jethro Tull, Yes and XTC, so his work on Songs From The Big Chair is highly anticipated.

How come the super deluxe edition box set doesn’t include the blu ray audio disc, or does it? Given the price tag and the “super deluxe” title, I think it definitely should have included the blu ray audio disc, unless they intend to release another box set “super duper deluxe edition” LOL
It’s a DVD, but a DVD-A for anyone who’s interested, so if you have the right kit it will deliver lossless 5.1 surround sound.
Bought this Blu-ray Audio (the first one in that format) : the new 2014 Mix is really interesting (great work and a tons of hourray for M. Wilson)
Ther’s a download coupon of the tracks with a link to the Hf Pure Audio website but the code give nothing !!

Back in the day, when there was a battle between SACD and DVD-Audio, you could pick up a Pioneer multi-format DVD player at a very reasonable price. Not sure if current models play the advanced resolution found on DVD-Audio discs.
Most Sony Blu-ray players can play the DSD stream from a SACD as long as you set up the player correctly.

There are lots of people still using DVD players. I think they still out number BDP’s out in the field, and media sales were still higher last time I saw the stats. Some audiophile DVD players have never been bettered for sound quality – the Arcam DV139 springs to mind.
You are correct thar DVD-A is not very popular now, and in fact Arcam’s new BDP has dropped support for it as a format.
It was up against SACD, and SACD won (if you can say that any of the high red formats won).
I recently listened to Seeds for the first time in ages and found myself hitting the track skip button a fair few times. Musicianship is great, but the songs aren’t. Not overly sure I’ll be buying the super deluxe if it surfaces…
Now, if we could only get the same treatment for “The Seeds of Love”, I’d be happy. Though “Chair” is remarkably sophisticated, experimental and timeless, I feel “Seeds” has songs that are more eloquent and catchy. “Woman in Chains”, “Badman’s Song” and “Advice for the Young at Heart” would all sound phenomenal in 5.1 multichannel.
Would anyone know the difference between the DVD 5.1 (included in the box set) and the BD 5.1. Would’nt they both have the same bit rate? Is there any advantage in obtaining the BD as opposed to the DVD?
If you’ve got a compatible DVD-A player then there is no difference. If you’ve only got a standard DVD-player then you don’t get lossless 5.1 (you get dolby 5.1 and DTS) so the blu-ray has the slight edge in that instance.
Thanks Paul. I would be playing it on a BD player. I dont know anyone who uses a DVD player anymore.
I’m assuming that what Paul meant here is “a BD player that only supports standard DVDs (i.e. doesn’t support DVD-A)”.
Understood. So, having ordered the box set, I may be out of luck getting the hi-res audio to play on my BD player (whichever one I decide to use). I’ll have to determine which of my players will support DVD-A. I was getting the impression from doing some online reading, that DVD-A was not a very popular format, or perhaps it is making somewhat of a comeback?

After forking out for the box set i can’t justify paying another £20 for this blu-ray which has exactly the same contents as the DVD included.
Fair enough… but for those who aren’t interested in the box this is cheaper way to get the 5.1

I agree, it is nice to see Universal stepping up their game a bit with their BluRay Audio releases. However, as I’m writing this, I also happen to be listening to the new BluRay Audio of XTC’s Drums & Wires so it’s hard not to feel as if Universal is still falling short. Looking at how much material is on the XTC release, it seems like a significant amount (if not all) of the bonus material from the 6 disc box could have been added to the BluRay. Would have been nice to have had all the remixes and b-sides in high res.
I guess Andy Patridge and APE don’t have the overheads of Universal, which probably has something to do with the way these things pan out. Also the 6-disc box set was available for £31 for a while, so that’s by no means a rip off.
Look also at the Yes-Relayer CD + BD that just came out. Tons of extras on the BD, three BD audio options, and a CD, for about the same price. “Overhead” is a code word for “a bloated enterprise larded with inefficiencies” which we should not have to pay for. Not to mention a healthy dollop of greed: charge whatever you think you can get away with, value be damned.
Paul was the $31 pound price with vat included at Amazon.uk for the 6 disk boxset? Reason why I ask I preordered from Amazon.uk but for some reason my price has not changed to that lower price yet minus the vat(mine is still 35.99 minus vat(29.99),I’m from Canada.
Yes VAT included but it was only £31 for a few hours so depending on when you pre-ordered you may have missed it. It went up to £37 very quickly after.
Good point Rob, They did add bonus material to the Grace Jones’ one. So why not this?
