A second volume of live performances by The Beatles recorded at the BBC in the early sixties will be issued by Apple/Universal on 10 November 2013.

On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2  features 63 tracks, none of which overlaps with The Beatles’ first BBC release, include 37 previously unreleased performances and 23 previously unreleased recordings of in-studio banter and conversation between the band’s members and their BBC radio hosts. It will be issued as a two-CD set and 180g vinyl package. Full track listing below.

The original Live at the BBC compilation was released back in 1994. It has been remastered in 2013 and renamed On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 1. This will be reissued on the same day as the new set.

Having bought the new set this week, I must say I am impressed. The sound on almost everything is really good. Even the tracks with not as good audio are still of a very listenable quality. My only issue is the fact that it really just focuses in on 1963. More stuff from 1964 & 65 would have been nicer. Also pissed that I’ll Follow the Sun is repeated from the Baby It’s You 1994/95 CD single. I wouldn’t have bought it at the time ($10 import!) if I thought it’d be released on a regular CD…

Best Buy is selling an edition with “5 Artcards only @ Best Buy.” If that’s appealing to anyone. I will go by later and grab a copy.

I have both of the songs that you mentioned. They are available if you seek out the “Complete BBC” box set. It is ten cd’s long. However, some of the early stuff is better served when the professionals remaster it for us.

[…] Still, quite nice to have if you don’t mind paying what is, at the time of writing, a £7 premium (Amazon UK) over the cost of the two separate releases. […]

Long overdue and an essential album for all Beatles fans. It is excellent news that the previously unreleased songs “Beautiful Dreamer” and “I’m Talking About You”, have been re-mastered and will be included in volume 2. Still missing though are the 1962 BBC recordings of “A Picture Of You” and “Dream Baby” – songs which don’t exist on any existing official Beatles release.

Great to have a second volume of these BBC recordings, but why does the vinyl version appear to be unavailable to pre-order? I’ve tried plenty of sites, none have it….

Its interesting there seems to be no BBC recordings from 1966-1970

Were they too big by that time?

The Beatles had stopped touring by 1966, and I guess that included a lot of promotional work too. I think part of it was that they were frustrated that the screaming fans were louder than them so they couldn’t hear themselves. Most BBC shows were in front of an audience at the time I think. Anyways, I’m sure somebody else could fill in the blanks for me.

I’ll be getting this set regardless, but does anybody know off the top of their heads if Vol 2 has any tracks that haven’t been bootlegged?

Too bad this new set, like the first, is mostly covers. They did do a lot of their own material on the BBC but for some reason it’s not being featured as much. Some of the tracks may have been released as CD single bonus tracks back in 1995: I’ll Follow The Sun and 2 others were on the single that was released way back when (the name of which escapes me).

Gazelle

The 4-track EP comprised the following:
(1) ‘Baby It’s You’ from ‘Pop Go The Beatles’ (recorded 1 June 1963)
(2) ‘I’ll Follow The Sun’ from ‘Top Gear’ (recorded 17 November 1964)
(3) ‘Devil In Her Heart’ from ‘Pop Go The Beatles’ (recorded 16 July 1963)
(4) ‘Boys’ from ‘Pop Go The Beatles’ (recorded 17 June 1963)

The versions of ‘I’ll Follow The Sun’ and ‘Boys’ from this EP are the same as those compiled on ‘On Air: Live At The BBC Volume 2’.

However, the version of ‘Devil In Her Heart’ from this EP is different to the one included on ‘On Air: Live At The BBC Volume 2’, which was recorded on 3 September 1963 for ‘Pop Go The Beatles’.

“Uncle Mac” used to finish “Children’s Favorites” on a Saturday morning with a Beatles song, when the BBC could no longer resist the inevitable. I will be very interested to see the track list of “long lost recordings” and my preorder is in place.

With this raft of “at the BBC” hitting our players, could we please have The Faces live shows ?

Galley

The artwork on the first set has always been on my list of favorites. The new one is even better!

i remember at the time of the first set being released the purists and bootleggers went wild at all that was missing, a raft of “unofficial” releases of BBC recordings not featured made it into the market. i have no doubt that some of these are the source of the “thought to be lost” recordings they are releasing!
