The Farm / The Complete Studio Recordings 1983-2004 / 7CD box set

farm

Demon Music will release a box set collecting the studio work of British band The Farm in March 2015.

The Complete Studio Recordings 1983-2004 is a seven-CD, 98-track set that goes right back to the independent early-to-mid-80s beginnings of the Liverpudlian outfit via the inclusion of the Pastures Old And New compilation before tracing the arc of their mainstream success that kicked off with 1990 singles Groovy Train and All Together Now.

The band’s three studio albums are of course present and correct including their 1991 debut Spartacus which reached number one in the UK. No less than three bonus CDs complete this package focusing on B-sides/non-album tracks, BBC Sessions and remixes respectively.

The Complete Studio Recordings will be issued on 9 March 2015 and is at the time of writing available for the very attractive price of £21 on Amazon UK.

Smile is one of the most under-rated songs ever. My fav Farm song. How on earth this song never made it on to an album or single is beyond me. Hullabaloo is an excellent album. Comfort and Golden Vision are amazing songs. Not a huge fan of the Farm’s early stuff but there’s plenty of great songs on this.

Paul Ball

“Smile” finally gets a CD realease, yay!
(it’s listed as a 12″ b-side, but was originally a Peel session track). Love that song.
Hulabaloo was an underrated album (especially ‘Golden Vision’). Better than the somewhat stodgy International Times. The 4 track Messiah EP was also great…

GROOVE ON!

Richard Seedhouse

I think there may be some duplication in the track listing ie ” Too Late “from Pasture old and New CD1 is the same version listed in the BBC Sessions CD 6 . I do hope instead that they put in “Living for Tomorrow” instead as it is isn’t available elsewhere . I also notice that other unique BBC session tracks like “Heart of a Nation” isn’t listed (unless its had a name change of course) which I seem to remember as being very good.

Adey

Despite the missing remixes listed by fans on here, at less than £21 for this boxset looks like a bargain to me!

Bc2323

Tx for the infos. maybe they can what they did not include downloadable ? Anyone Edsel ?

Davy

Should be noted that Groovy Train (Luv Thug) is the Terry Farley Remix from the Spartacus remix EP, which they included. Also Groovy Train (Real Bass) is also The Bootle Mix, also included. Why these mixes were renamed, I have no clue. I also noticed the included History, which is actually Suzy Boo. The only difference between the two seems to be the intro.

bc2323

The job is fine, but not perfect. The price is amazing. I just woul have loved all the b-sides included (minus Creepers, my mistake) and the few unreleased tracks they already threw on bargain compilations to make it complete. Add the original extended mixes of the classic singles, and that would have been perfect. Noboby wants 800 discs of Musto remixes, just the original UK ones.

Davy

I think they did a fine job. Sorry, nobody wants 800 discs of lousy Tommy Musto remixes that were bad enough the first time around. Creepers is on Love See No Colour. World Cup was cute, and I did love the Hulabaloo acoustic tracks, but has anyone noticed the ridiculously low price? I have ZERO complaints about the track listing. Smile is my favorite Farm song, and i’m thrilled it will finally be on CD.

Don’t get me wrong, i will be the first to buy this set, even if i have already almost all commercial CD singles.
But, something’s odd.
On Pasture of old and news, they took off the bonus tracks and put them on CD n°5, and they took off bonus tracks on Spartacus. There’s now plenty of space !! What bother me that they forgot besides and previously released on compilation rare tracks. It would have been nice to include these following tracks on an eighth CD.

Missing b-sides
Living For Tomorrow (Janice Song session)
Memories (John Peel Session)
Family Of Man (Original Mix)
Family Of Man (Underground Mix)
All Together Now (Live)
Over Again (Live Demo)
Creepers 5:30
Messiah (Acoustic Version) 4:46
Shake Some Action (Acoustic Version) 4:11
Comfort (Acoustic Version) 4:31
World Cup Soccer – What’s It All About

rare tracks from compilations
Good Morning Sinners (Previously Unreleased Version)
Mind (Unreleased Original Remix)

Concerning remixes, i was hoping that they include more, as the remixes from that era are not butchering work of originals bit cool varaitions. And except 9 on the total, they were all commercial ones. No promos, white labels, downloads as you light think. I did list all of them properly FIY.
Paul, as you are well connected, you might suggest Edsel to include some, or sell bonus CD’s on their website for hardcore fans, or hi-quality downloads ?? would be happy to help.

Peter van der Wijst

Does anyone know if these albums are remastered?

Craig

As the title of the set is ‘complete studio recordings’ they’d have been best to remove the remix disc entirely to prevent complaints about those missing. However, I presume they put in the remix disc as an extra as they’d never be enough demand for a separate complete remix box. As remixes aren’t studio recordings any missing doesn’t stop this being complete as per it’s title. So in other words, this will be as good as it gets, the chance of further Farm reissues is about nil so buy it and enjoy!

Eric

Hang on, *98* Farm tracks and there are STILL tons missing?! Oh boy, we really have fallen down the rabbit-hole of reissueland now.

Apologies to fans of The Farm (they made some nice singles, especially the flop ones from Love See No Colour), but seeing this leaves me unsure whether to laugh or cry.

Don

Glad to see a few folks here interested in The Farm. I loved those guys!

I’m looking forward to this set and it’s a stellar value for 7 CDs and a 40-page booklet.

As for the missing remixes, yes, that’s a shame. I think most (but certainly not all) of the missing mixes were done for the US market. I wouldn’t mind so much except they call the box “complete recordings,” which it is not.

Still, I’m looking forward to this. In all honesty a lot of those missing mixes are dodgy, and many of the good ones can still be found on CD singles and other compilations.

Francis

Maybe you lot should compile all the box sets that get released. There maybe reasons tracks are not included.

James Pigg

As well as different 7″ versions also missing is:

Living For Tomorrow (Janice Song session) – from Steps Of Emotion 12″
Memories (John Peel Session) – from Steps Of Emotion 7″
Stepping Stone (Untitled 7.04 Remix) – from Stepping Stone 12″ Promo
Groovy Train (The Rocky & Diesel Mix) – from Groovy Train 12″
Groovy Train (Real Bass) – from Groovy Train CD Maxi-Single
Groovy Train (On The Edge) – from Groovy Train CD Maxi-Single
Groovy Train (Club Mix Radio Edit) – from Groovy Train US Promo CD
Single
Groovy Train (Alternative 12″ Radio Edit) – from Groovy Train US Promo CD Single
Groovy Train (Groovy Club Mix) – from Groovy Train US CD Single
Groovy Train (Alternative Mix) – from Groovy Train US CD Single
All Together Now (Indie Rock Mix) – from Groovy Train US CD Single
All Together Now (Club Mix) – from Groovy Train US CD Single
All Together Now (Musto & Bones Remixes) – from US Promo 12 (includes: Indie Rock Dance Mix; Indie Rock Dub; Indie Rock Edit; Dub Mix; Club Edit)
Love See No Colour (The Fibre Mix) – from UK CD
Love See No Colour (3-Beat’s Stripped Down Mix) – from US 12″ Promo
Love See No Colour (3-Beat’s Stripped Down Instrumental) – from US 12″ Promo
Love See No Colour (3-Beat’s Dub Mix) – from US 12″ Promo
Love See No Colour (3-Beat’s Dub Instrumental) – from US 12″ Promo

A lot of this has never appeared on CD and it’s a shame these rare remixes couldn’t feature. What about a follow up remixes box?

Steven

I guess by calling it ‘Complete’ they have set themselves up for expert fan lists of what is in fact missing. A shame as, similar to Griff, I like them and the box set does look attractive. :(

Griff

I really like the “Farm” but not a massive fan but @ £21.00 for the box set it seems like a bargain to me and I am really tempted to pre-order this box set or am I being a bit naive?

Any information from some die hard fans out there would be much appreciated.

richie

Suppose it`s a case of pick `n` mix!

Nathan

Glad I am not the only person to notice that a few mixes are omitted! But it is good to see that some of the more obscure stuff is available on CD – official for once! – shame it hasn’t got a decent catalogue number?

Brian
