The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society box SIGNED edition

Last year’s excellent Kinks box, the 50th anniversary of The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society is now available in very limited numbers SIGNED by Kinks guitar legend Dave Davies!

This box set is the very definition of ‘super deluxe’ version of an album and won plaudits for the scale of the content (it totals 170 tracks) and the quality of the presentation (as well as the three vinyl records, five CDs and three seven-inch singles, it includes a 52-page hardcover book, along with posters and various other items of memorabilia).

100 signed copies of this box set are available exclusively via the SDE shop. You can head over there via this link, or ‘shortcut’ the process by buying directly via this site using the button below (strictly one per customer).

  1. Thanks for this great deal Paul! I assumed that it would be sold out very quickly (which it is now I see) so I bought one straight away. Always loved the Kinks but I knew only the singles. I have the essential Kinks which David Bowie wrote the liner notes for. Just recently I discovered this great album which deserves its place among the great sixties albums next to the likes of Sgt Pepper, Pet Sounds, Blonde on blonde, Let it bleed… Paul do you know how many days it will take the box set to arrive in Belgium?

    1. Thanks for the purchase, Bernard. I think it’s normally 4-5 working days to somewhere like Belgium. We may end up shipping soon then the 28 June, but I’ll keep everyone posted.

  2. I bought the boxset during the amazon.de 3 for 2 deal. Kind of a holy grail item for me, a very long time Kinks collector. I’d buy a 2nd copy, but I’ve gotten plenty of Dave and Ray’s signatures in person over the last 4 decades, and I’d have to find somebody to buy the first copy. Thanks for this, I hope it makes some Kinks fans happy.

    1. At the time, stereo masters were usually an afterthought, and even session recordings were done with mono reproduction in mind (including such things as instrument and microphone placement, (un)importance of track separation, EQ, and so on). As a result, while obviously you don’t get stereophonic sound, mono releases of old recordings can be superior to stereo releases created from the same session recordings in a number of ways.

Eventually, this stopped being true, when recording was done with stereo reproduction first in mind.

    2. Some people prefer mono, even the bands who recorded the stuff, because supposedly, it’s how the music originally was released in the 60s and how it sounded coming out of a car radio…it’s all the elements coming out of 1 speaker, as opposed to certain parts coming out of 2 separate speakers, aka stereo…me, I prefer stereo, but sometimes I like all the elements together in 1 channel, like the first Ramones album, the mono mix…as for this Kinks box, I do want it, but paying off a cruise first…if there are still signed copies available in a month or two, I might swing for it then…

  3. It’s a superb box, up there with my favourites like Slade and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. I was lucky enough to pick mine up for £63 from am.de on a 3 for 2 but it’s well worth £125 even without Dave’s scribble.

  4. This is great, but curious timing. Would think most Kinks fans have already picked this up. I can’t think of buying another copy.

    1. Curious timing indeed David. Personally, it infuriates me when this kind of thing happens. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great opportunity for people to get a great signed set and kudos to SDE, but as a Kinks fan myself I ordered this set as soon as I got a sniff despite having the vinyl in a variety of guises (various mixes and coloured vinyl). Then news surfaced of the additional Time Song in limited quantities and now this. Similar thing happened when I purchased the Belinda Carlisle coloured vinyl collection only to have slightly different coloured versions released individually within a short space of time. Aaaaagghhh,!!!

      1. I agree with you Gary. Purchased when it first came out.
Pretty annoying he’s now signed some, why not do that in the first place?

Same thing happened with the Saint Etienne box set that was available signed in the SDE shop recently. Purchased that one when it came out, without signature.
Nothing against the SDE shop, good luck to Paul with it.
Its just very annoying that the signed box sets are turning up months or years after fans already buying them. Fans that probably paid top prices as well and didn’t wait for deals.

        1. Just to correct you, the Saint Etienne boxes were both available to pre-order weeks before release, so there was plenty of time to switch if you wanted a signed one rather than that free EP. Not the same as The Kinks.

          1. Hi Paul

I was referring to Foxbase Alpha, not Tiger Bay.
I purchased FBA on original release date so was annoyed when it turns up signed years later.

Purchased Tiger Bay from their website because I wanted the EP.
I would have liked a signed copy as well but the band seemed to have decided only to sign your boxes, not the ones from their own website.

The main point is that Dave has now signed some of the boxes a year after the original release date. Why not do that for the first purchasers? First come first served and all that

          2. Oh yeah… fair enough, although it IS two years later, not three months later. Are people who bought this in 1968 justified in being ‘annoyed’ that if they’d waited 50 years they could have got this box instead? People get annoyed when sets they bought are cheaper down the line (Kate Bush), they get annoyed when they are ‘better’ (signed). Any opportunity to be annoyed and it seems some people will take it. It’s all just economics and market forces, which I thought was obvious. My advice is enjoy what you have and don’t look for things to be annoyed by :)

          3. I think Colm is referring to Foxbase Alpha rather than the fabulous Tiger Bay boxset.

As with absolutely everything in this game it is a bit of luck mixed with some patience, willpower and guesswork. The Belinda Carlisle thing is a good example. There are so many questions we all have to ask ourselves.
            A) do I need it or
            B) do I want it
            C) can I afford it
            D) amazon uk de fr it sp or SDE or local retailer
            E) pre order or wait – will it be sold out before release or will it be hanging around for years. Should I wait for a “deal alert” or will it be gone before then?
            F) will the bits I really want from the box be broken out quite quickly, in decent time or never.
            G) will this supposed limited edition (one time pressing!) suddenly reappear in large numbers 8 months down the line? In the same colours or different.
            H) will there be an incentive to buy to shift the last copies( not just a price drop) not just the recent items in the SDE shop but a few things appear on amazon signed too like the Pretenders box set that had a few hundred signed turn up well after release.
            I) what does limited even mean 300? 500? 1,000? 3,000? 10,000? This number has an effect on most of A-H as things like the Depeche Mode boxes or the U2 boxes would be a different proposition if it were 1,000 rather than what seems like 10,000+ boxes

So many other things I am sure go through people’s minds. It’s not quite a lottery as we can go on experience and a hunch rather than just luck.
Allied to all this of course is what we think we can get away with before the Mrs. / Mr. Blows a gasket and puts their foot down.

          4. Am I entitled to get annoyed at your rather sarcastic reply (at 20.59 below) Paul?

People pay their hard earned cash for a box set on the original release date because they are fans who want the item there and then.
They do not expect to see the box set released a few months or years later with a signed edition.

Pardon me for being a bit peeved, to put it politely.

      2. “Personally, it infuriates me when this kind of thing happens.”

Sometimes I’m angered by stuff like this, sometimes not. But always, even when I’m angered, I wonder if I should be. After all, what’s really the tangible difference for me between not re-buying this signed release because I already bought this box, and this signed release never being made available? In both cases, I’ve got exactly the same thing — an unsigned copy of the box — and am out no more or less money.

Would it have been *better* if it had been made available from the start? Sure. But accepting that it wasn’t, what does anyone (including you and me) gain by them simply not releasing signed copies at all? Nothing that I can think of. So they might as well go ahead.

      1. I don’t think this is a forum for anybody to get annoyed about anything really. It’s a bunch of anoraks and nerds (self included) collecting music. Putting out signed versions / colours / different sleeves / boxes / bonus socks is just marketing. Caveat emptor. Keep up the great work Paul, from a very happy daily visitor.

        1. Now bonus socks would be superb, I did have a pair of Mike Oldfield Five Miles Out wrist bands in 1982 and that made me look so cool at school…according to me and no one else at all.

It would be amusing though if all socks were only ever black. Yellow socks to match yellow vinyl would be a step too far.

          1. “Now bonus socks would be superb”

I think Graham was referencing Elvis Costello’s latest release. Green vinyl with matching green socks.

  5. Got this last year with the 3for2 Saturn/Amazon deal. Awesome value for money made even better now by Dave’s signature. Cool poster and accompanying book as well. Don’t hesitate. And the thing weighs a ton.
