Van Halen / deluxe box set

vanhalen
Rhino are to reissue a Van Halen 4CD deluxe box that will feature newly remastered versions of the band’s 1978 eponymous debut and their sixth studio album, 1984, along with a brand new live album Tokyo Dome Live In Concert.

Renowned engineer Chris Bellman was enlisted for remastering the studio albums and in order to produce the original sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes for CD and for 180-gram vinyl (and for the digital versions).

The 25-track double live album was recorded in 2013 and features singer David Lee Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen and was mixed by Bob Clearmountain.

The 4CD deluxe set is also available as a 6LP vinyl box and all three albums can be bought individually as CD and vinyl LPs (the live album is 2CD or 4LP).  Other Van Halen albums Diver Down, Women and Children First, Van Halen II and Fair Warning are being remastered and will be reissued later this year.

This new Van Halen deluxe set is out on 13 April 2015.

I ordered the DELUXE edition and I believe the “1984” cd to be defective. The beginning of each song actually begins in the last two seconds of the previous track. The track markings are off by two seconds. So if I just want to hear track 4 (let’s say) I will miss the first two seconds of that song as it appears at the end of the track 3. WTF!!

Really interested on what everyone thinks of the sound quality of these remasters. Love both of these albums and they would be worth buying if they are remastered right.

LedMan

If the studio albums offer the best sound quality to date, I hope they are eventually released on blu Ray audio.
Rhino has released some albums on this format within the last few years so hopefully they will continue. I’ll eventually purchase every DLR era VH album if they do and I’m sure many other fans will too. At least 4 albums or more could fit on 1 disc and bonus tracks would probably attract even more potential buyers. Although I still purchase CDs, the last couple of years I’ve been learning more towards Hi Rez releases.

Wil

These so called “remasters 2015” sound EXACTLY the same as the remasters from 2000. Don’t be fooled by WB. Old wine in a new bottle.
I’ll tell you, these remasters are not new at all, they are just tehe remaster from 2000 !! What a bunch of idiots at WB that they think we buy those albums for the third ?? time !!!!

Satan

All you fucking Hagar sheep can go suck Sammy off on his Chickenshit website, or wherever the sheep go to worship him now days.

As for the live album, admittedly Panama’s a little rough. But we got an advance copy of the album here in Hell, and you can bet your soul on this….. don’t judge the album by that one overplayed song!

Chris

Spoken like a true Roth–knuckle-dragging-mouth-breather–fanboy.

Gisabun

This is only the second official concert release and the first with DLR. Hmmmmm. I would of preferred a concert from the 1984 era.

pinkfloyd

Van Halen is remastering 1984 & the rest of DLR’s albums and expect the fans to re-buy for the zillionth time?
How about give Sammy Hagar a break by remastering his 4 VH’s albums and throwing in bonus tracks?
All 4 Sammy’s albums topped the billboard charts…

Chudbeagle

DLR has been shot for years. I saw the tour in 2012 and he was like a yelping coyote in its’ dying hours. This live album will be painful.

As for the 1st and 6th albums-makes ZERO sense.

The 2000 remasters sound fantastic. No need for an upgrade with no bonus features.

Eddie and Alex could give a rat’s ass about the fans. Remastering the Sammy-era albums would be nice (and not some expensive Japanese remasters the band had nothing to do with).

Oh well.

Lennie

Amazing. they just released the 6CD box set “Studio Albums 1978-1984” a few months ago, and now they’re telling us that it’s all been remastered, and redone, and we need to buy the whole thing yet again? Greed knows no bounds.

Gisabun

Because they want to dump their stock. Columbia did the same thing for the first 7 Springsteen albums. A box set for them and then late last year they were released again but remastered.

Tom

Before you buy the live album… I advise you to listen to the Panama “live” track…. it’s been posted on FB on various pages…. DLR sounds horrible in that track…. I am surprised Van Halen agreed to release this live album with Dave’s horrible vocals…not only that but he sounds like he’s just talking thru the lyrics and not singing…. once you hear Panama…you may think twice about paying so much money for this box set however, it makes sense that you can’t get the other two albums without buying the live album as well… I already canceled my pre-order after listening to the Panama live track.

Fran Hearley

Totally agree with your remarks about the live album. Heard “Running with the Devil” and ….Wow

Poodle

Isn’t it simply their two landmark albums in terms of influence and sales. Makes perfect sense to a record company.

Wazza

As everyone has already said this is a very strange box set indeed , but at least they are making them all available separately as the 2 albums seem somewhat redundant to me without any bonus content , the live album should hopefully be alright

Dean

This is an odd set. Talk about cobbled together. I’m trying to get my head around what they’re thinking, but it’s a struggle. First album, sixth album, and a contemporary live album?

LedMan

I agree with Galley. Hopefully the DLR era discs are released individually.

Barnaba

1st album, 6th album + new concert? Makes no sense to me.

Galley

The bundling of two albums seems odd to me.

Gisabun

Ya. A odd move. Maybe they plan to release 2 more live concerts and through 2 studio albums with each of them.

Iggie

No details of the LP box set availability in Europe yet
