NewsZZ Top / The Studio Albums 1970 –1990 box set with original mixes
Rhino will release a 10CD ZZ Top box set on 10th June 2013.
The Studio Albums 1970-1990 comes in the familiar Rhino clamshell box packaging (see The Eagles and Chicago) and each album will come in vinyl replica card wallets, with Tres Hombres and Tejas replicating the original gatefolds.
Most importantly, this set presents, for the first time on CD, the original mixes for ZZ Top’s First Album, Rio Grande Mud and Tejas. Tres Hombres and Fandango will also use the original mixes, although expanded versions of those albums that used those mixes were issued back in 2006.
This set is looking like a no-brainer for fans, especially since it will be priced competitively.

I bought this and so far played only the “Tejas” CD as I was excited to hear the original mix restored. I am sad to say the mastering on “Tejas” is muddy and very dark, as well as inconsistent (“El Diablo” has gobs more low end than the rest). These sound horrible compared to the stellar versions on the “Chrome, Smoke…” box set. Thankfully more than half of ‘Tejas” is on that box set.

“The complete first CD has incorrect channel orientation (swapped channels), and so does the first half of “Tejas”. Not sure how that slipped through quality control.”

Yes, a definite must have. I don’t know what’s wrong with Amazon UK’s listings these days. Not only do theys till not have the Bowie 10 x CD box listed (two days before release at time of writing) just MPS copies of the first issue at high prcies, but they have not even got the release dat for ZZ Top set listed on the link and have only a couple of incorrect MPS offers for some old 80s issue on the listing page! As with the Bowie box, Sainsburys have it on pre-order offer @£25 with a 10th June release. I’ve got the old Six Pack boxset, and the others individually, but this is too good to ignore with the original mixes now featured (assuming that turns out to be true!).
