IN THE VILLA OF ORMEN
IN THE VILLA OF ORMEN
STANDS A SOLITARY CANDLE

IN THE CENTRE OF IT ALL
IN THE CENTRE OF IT ALL
YOUR EYES

ON THE DAY OF EXECUTION
ON THE DAY OF EXECUTION
ONLY WOMEN KNEEL AND SMILE
AH AH AH AH
AT THE CENTRE OF IT ALL
AT THE CENTRE OF IT ALL
YOUR EYES

OO OO OO OO
OOO
OO OO OO OO
OOO
OO OO OO OO

SOMETHING HAPPENED ON THE DAY HE DIED
SPIRIT ROSE A METRE THEN STEPPED ASIDE
SOMEBODY ELSE TOOK HIS PLACE AND BRAVELY CRIED:
I’M A BLACKSTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR

HOW MANY TIMES DOES AN ANGEL FALL?
HOW MANY PEOPLE LIE INSTEAD OF TALKING TALL?
HE TROD ON SACRED GROUND HE CRIED ALOUD INTO THE CROWD
I’M A BLACKSTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR
I’M NOT A GANGSTAR

I CAN’T ANSWER WHY
I’M A BLACKSTAR
JUST GO WITH ME
I’M NOT A FILMSTAR
IMMA TAKE YOU HOME
I’M A BLACKSTAR
TAKE YOUR PASSPORT AND SHOES
I’M NOT A POPSTAR
AND YOUR SEDATIVES BOO
I’M A BLACKSTAR
YOU’RE THE FLASH IN THE PAN
I’M NOT A MARVELSTAR
I’M THE GREAT I AM
I’M A BLACKSTAR

I’M A BLACKSTAR I’M WAY UP, ON MONEY, I’VE GOT GAME
I SEE RIGHT, SO WIDE, SO OPEN-HEARTED PAIN
I WANT EAGLES IN MY DAYDREAMS, DIAMONDS IN MY EYES
I’M A BLACKSTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR

SOMETHING HAPPENED ON THE DAY HE DIED
SPIRIT ROSE A METRE THEN STEPPED ASIDE
SOMEBODY ELSE TOOK HIS PLACE AND BRAVELY CRIED:
I’M A BLACKSTAR
I’M A STARSTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR

I CAN’T ANSWER WHY
I’M NOT A GANGSTAR
BUT I CAN TELL YOU HOW
I’M NOT A FLAMSTAR
WE WERE BORN UPSIDE DOWN
I’M A STARS STAR
BORN THE WRONG WAY ROUND
I’M NOT A WHITESTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR

OO OO OO OO

I’M NOT A GANGSTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR

OO OO OO OO

I’M NOT A PORNSTAR
I’M NOT A WANDERING STAR

OO OO OO OO

I’M A BLACKSTAR
I’M A BLACKSTAR

  1. Fantastic song and video! Really eerie and dream like from start to finish, reminds me a lot of his work from 1. Outside. I guess they finally found what is left of Major Tom?

  2. Personally, I think this is brilliant.

Musically, it hits back to what artists were doing in the early ’00s in mixing electronic textures with regular instruments. I miss that vibe and, you can call Bowie behind the times if you want, but I’m glad to hear that sonic palette at work here.

Like most of you, I have no idea what’s going on in the video, but I like it regardless. It’s been too long that mainstream music videos have been straight performance or just literal interpretations of the material. I’m glad someone with some clout is bringing the weirdness again.

All told, it makes me want to hear the album. No question.

  3. I think it’s an incredibly interesting song. The video is a little bit too creepy for me though. I’m so glad that David is making music again and I typically like when he pushes boundaries. Can’t wait to hear more.

  4. If this is the best he can come up with he may as well give up and become a recluse. Awful Rubbish, not even tuneful! Someone somewhere compared it to Queen’s Bo Rap. REALLY! Must of had Bowie tinted glasses and been listening to one of his good tunes from 1981.

  5. This song seems like several songs in one. I like the overall tune, Bowie’s voice is tremendous, but the continuous, whiney repetition of ‘I’m a Blackstar’ from 5 mins in, really did my head in. Then the last 2 & a half minutes were my favourite, love the Middle Eastern influences & his rich, sensuous voice…incredibly seductive.

  6. I really don’t find it difficult in the slightest, and for a 10 min track I think it keeps your interest and dare I say I think it’s catchy. The video is what I want from an artist something edgy pushing boundaries ….not bloody Adele.

  7. I love Bowie but the song is definitely in the “difficult” category (video is in the “cobblers” category). Will probably improve with a few re-listens as happened with the first from The Next Day. Either way…great to see him back!

  8. I loved the jazz stylings in this track. Fingers crossed the album is going to see Bowie stretching out and being innovative rather than playing it safe. First impressions sound great.

  9. Wow. Just wow. Bowie took a long, long, break, but he’s returned with some magic – I’m stunned. Just a fantastic piece of music, multi-layered, lots of intricate instrumentation, a middle-eastern flavor pervades. Just gorgeous.

As to the video – it’s a video. I don’t tend to watch videos more than once or twice, and then never once the song is released. So that just isn’t my focus. I wouldn’t know a good video from a bad one, to be fair. I just don’t care.

The song though – pure magic. Mysterious, like a slow exhalation of breath, not overwrought or pushy, just sailing along on desert winds.

    Bowie’s on sale again!

  10. Hmmm…

Kind of wish I had not seen the video as (for me) it detracts from what is an interesting (if challenging) piece of music. Some of those images are frankly a bit crazed…

Particularly like the middle section of the song.

  11. Well, what do I know…
This just isn’t Ziggy Stardust nor the David Bowie I liked.
This is sooo beyond what I normally listen to.
I let people like what they like and I leave it with that.
Good luck, but I will leave this train now.

  12. Simply adore it – middle section is great, and love the OTT performance in the video (post 4 mins) that we haven’t seen from him in a while. Bring on the album :-).
An edited version (5 mins) would go down well . . .

  13. Well the lyrics and song are better than “Up until one century ago there lived in the Zi Duang province of an eastern country a glass-like spider”. Which as far as I’m concerned is the first thing on my checklist when assessing new Bowie material :-)

  14. Just watched the ten minute video, for “Blackstar”. Love the song, but the video does my head in. I LOVE Watching videos, but even if it made sense to me, FOR ME, this video spoils the song!
