SDE Reissue Preview for 2018

It’s tradition here at SDE to take a peak into the future and examine what the next 12 months might hold for music fans who enjoy reissues and box sets.

On the face of it, re-releasing an old album or some kind of box set might seem straight forward – record company owns music, record company releases music – but in reality these releases are a tricky business, with many, many parties often involved in the process, including the artist, lawyers, disgruntled ex-band members, record label, managers (sometimes more than one), accountants, PR firms and management companies that have their own strategy about what their artist should be doing. Another shadowy figure plays a part too, especially in recent times; I refer, of course, to the Grim Reaper…

On a whim, a box set can be redefined, reshaped (not literally, although that might have happened to Screamadelica), diluted, or even cancelled because someone is not happy, for some reason or another. Box sets project often tweak the nose of schedules and drop ice cubes down the vest of fan expectations. Let’s not forget that it’s taken five years for the Roxy Music box to move from its ‘chrysalis’ stage and take flight and  – whisper it –  I was working on Tears For Fears‘ The Seeds Of Love super deluxe in late 2014!

So while it’s fair game to constructively criticise these releases once they emerge, the fact that they exist at all is normally something worth celebrating (normally). What follows – SPOILER ALERT – is a look at reissues-yet-to-come. Both confirmed releases for the early part of 2018 and then a look at what is likely to happen or what might happen later on. Enjoy!

JANUARY

Five years ago Warners kicked off their Fleetwood Mac reissue campaign with Rumours and since then we’ve enjoyed super deluxe editions of Tusk, Mirage and Tango in the Night (plus associated RSD specials). The label are now going back to 1975 and will reissue the Fleetwood Mac album, completing all the studio albums that feature all members of the current line-up.

Propaganda‘s A Secret Wish will be reissued this month (look out for SDE interviews with both Stephen Lipson and Claudia Brücken) and that delayed Ten Years After box should finally be released.

Roxy Music's 1972 debut to be reissued four-disc 45th anniversary super deluxe edition

FEBRUARY 2018

The long awaited and now mildly controversial Roxy Music box is reissued in Feb. The price is still the biggest talking point along with the use of the 1999 remaster (not rated amongst aficionados) but there are a lot of positives: early demos, BBC sessions, and Steven Wilson’s 5.1 mix and what looks like an amazing book.

MARCH 2018

Pet Shop Boys continue with their ‘Catalogue’ reissue campaign, this month with Please, Actually and Introspective. Presumably they will also re-reissue Behaviour, Very and Bilingual later in the year. These ‘Further Listening’ reissues have been good, but because the PSBs passed up the opportunity to issue a 30th anniversary Please box set, I really feel the future looks bleak in terms of back catalogue and box sets. One ‘Catalogue’ is finished, that will be it for ages.

APRIL 2018 & BEYOND

The rumours are that Apple and Universal will reissue a 50th anniversary edition of ‘The Beatles‘ aka The White Album this year. The 50th anniversary is in November so if this happens, it won’t be a summer release like last year’s Sgt. Pepper. Expect ‘Esher demos’, outtakes and more, although a 5.1 mix of the entire double album doesn’t seem very likely…

Talking of the Fab Four, late last year when asked of his plans for for this year, Paul McCartney told fans: “I’ll probably be putting out a new album.” Good news, although whether that means there won’t be a archive collection reissue is unknown. In 2013, Paul’s last studio album New was issued in October and Wings Over America was reissued in May of that same year. SDE would like to see a similar timeline this year, although Paul won’t want either a new album or a reissue to clash with any Beatles product. I would personally love Wild Life, London Town or Back To The Egg, but I’m expecting 1997’s Flaming Pie to be the next reissue, although that’s gut instinct more than anything else. It’s only 20 years old and therefore lacks some of the ‘mystery’ of those much earlier album. I do wish Macca would put the 1970s ‘to bed’ in terms of his archive reissues. The other album outstanding from that decade is Red Rose Speedway.

David Bowie‘s official twitter feed hinted at a Let’s Dance related Bowie product on Christmas Day but yesterday we saw that this relates to a digital only release of the original demo to Let’s Dance. A full blown reissue of the 1983 album would never have tied in with Parlophone’s strategy and we aren’t expecting anything this year. Here at SDE we are expecting a fourth box set (in the series that started with 2015’s Five Years) to feature a remastered Let’s Dance and relevant bonus tracks to be included within that on Re:Call 4. The box will probably include Let’s Dance, Tonight, Never Let Me Down, the Labyrinth soundtrack and other associated work (Absolute Beginners, When The Wind Blows etc) with an outside chance of the first Tin Machine album. That would by ‘tidy’ if nothing else. There are loads of remixes in the 1980s and not all of them good. Someone will be sweating over decisions about the merits of ‘Vocal Dance’ mixes and ‘Extended Dub’ mixes. Any hint of never-been-on-CD omissions and you can bet fans will be up in arms. A box celebrating the 1980s shouldn’t be coy about remixes.

Eurythmics recently failed in their bid to be accepted as 2018 inductees in the ‘Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’, but at least there seems to be a thawing of relations with Sony, which has resulted in band-approved reissues of all their studio albums (except Nineteen-Eighty Four) on 180g vinyl. Not really what fans want, but a step in the right direction, I suppose. I’d be amazed if the band and label managed to agree on and deliver a box set this year, but if they were going to do it, then 2018 would be a good one because 35 years ago both the Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) and Touch albums were issued.

Any good reissue sleuth looks at anniversaries as a place to start when looking at what might be re-released in the next 12 months. 2018 is of course the 25th anniversary year for anything issued in 1993. Albums SDE loves that were put out in that year include INXS‘ Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, Suede‘s debut, Terence Trent D’Arby‘s Symphony or Damn, The The‘s Dusk and Duran Duran’s The Wedding Album (technically called Duran Duran).

Actually, let’s talk about Duran Duran. This year is the 40th anniversary of the formation of the band, which is interesting… In terms of reissues, an expanded Wedding Album would be surely very well received; this was apparently on the cards a few years ago, but nothing came of it. Despite a decent 2009 deluxe, I actually think a big super deluxe of Rio or Seven and the Ragged Tiger (35th anniversary for the latter) is more likely, but everything depends on the health of the band’s relationship with Warners who own most of their back catalogue (and indeed put out 2015’s Paper Gods). Duran Duran seem far more focussed on touring and new albums these days than looking back and all has been quiet on the reissue front since 2010, when Big Thing (30th anniversary this year) was re-released. To put that into perspective, Paul McCartney has delivered 10 studio albums (and one live album) in the same period. Nine DD albums have been released since Big Thing and none of them been reissued and expanded (I’m not counting special editions near to the time of release, such as The Wedding Album 2CD). Even the career rejuvenating Astronaut (which feels relatively recent) is already almost 14 years old! The band can’t blame label politics for the non-appearance of some of their output. They own 1997’s Medazzaland outright, for example, and continue to do nothing with it. That wouldn’t even be a ‘reissue’ in the UK since it was never released here in the first place!

Although The Red Shoes is 25 this year, Kate Bush‘s The Kick Inside is 40 years old, which is a much bigger deal. One wonders whether Kate will finally relent and allow one of her studio albums to be remastered, expanded and repackaged for an anniversary super deluxe edition (go on Kate, you know you want to!). The album contains her only UK number one, Wuthering Heights (issued 40 years ago last Saturday) and despite later experimentation, The Kick Inside remains a remarkable record. The Man With The Child In His Eyes was recorded three years before the album was released (in 1975) when Kate was only 16. Amazing. A reissue feels very unlikely, but then if you’d suggested in January 2014 that Kate might perform live during that year, you’d have been laughed at.

Tears For Fears confirm UK stage return in support of new album

The situation with Tears For Fears isn’t dissimilar to Paul McCartney. There’s the much anticipated reissue of The Seeds of Love waiting in the wings and the small matter of a new album in the can, which is also backstage, ready to make an entrance. Between them, band, management and label need to work out strategies and priorities before we see anything more. The good news is that with a 2018 tour already committed to, they are surely going to have to release something. Or maybe not. My prediction, if you want it, is that the album that is supposed to be delivered around May will end up being pushed back to later this year and the Seeds of Love reissue [for which I wrote the sleeve notes in 2015!] will go back until 2019 – the 30th anniversary year. I hope I’m wrong, but we shall see.

Time and Again: The Ultimate a-haa-ha fans can’t really complain about a lack of activity in recent times. In 2015 we had surprise comeback album Cast In Steel and three truly fabulous reissues of Stay On These Roads, East of the Sun West of the Moon and Memorial Beach. 2016 saw the release of the two-disc Ultimate a-ha: Time and Again compilation and last year we had both the MTV Unplugged and the Waaktaar & Zoe album. Next up should be reissues of Minor Earth Major Sky (2000) and Lifelines (2002) which will hopefully hit ‘the shops’ in the next 12 months.

Bye, George. SDE reflects on the career and achievements of George Michael

George Michael‘s Listen Without Prejudice reissue was a big success last year, reaching number one in the UK album charts and the Freedom film was, in the end, a fantastic promotional tool. Of course it’s very sad that George is no longer with us but fans will want to know what the future brings in terms of his back catalogue. In a recent interview feature, UK industry publication Music Week stated that Sony and David Austin (George’s friend/manager) want the LWP project to “kickstart a 10-15 year plan that will secure Michael’s legacy in the same way Warner has with David Bowie.” That’s an interesting idea, but unlike Bowie, George Michael wasn’t massively prolific. In David Bowie’s first 50 years he released 22 studio albums. In the same time period George put out seven, including the two Wham! albums and his solo output. Warners squeezed a 13LP vinyl box from three of David’s albums (Diamond Dogs, Young Americans and Station to Station) but, with the best will in the world, can you imagine a 13LP vinyl box that contains Fantastic, Make It Big and The Final? Whatever product does emerge, I don’t see much happening this year, to be honest, and David Austin seems to be the man in control. He told Music Week: “There is a strategy there. It’s a long-term game. It’s not like we’re going to go out and make new records, I hate that kind of stuff.”

Lloyd Cole has said that he is looking to deliver a vinyl box set at some point in 2018. It’s not yet known whether this will be a Commotions package or his solo work. Previously he’d mentioned that Universal didn’t want to do it, so this might get licensed to a third party. The Small Faces‘ posthumous The Autumn Stone double album looks likely to be reissued in the next 12 months and granted it’s not a reissue, but we can expect a new Bruce Springsteen album which is, in The Boss’ words “influenced by Southern California pop music of the ’70s.”. It would be nice if he’d issue a Born in the USA box set! Those Cardigans vinyl reissues mentioned late last year didn’t appear in 2017 so hopefully they’ll make an appearance in 2018, and as a follow-up to the Sam Brown box, expect an SDE-curated four-CD set featuring a 1980’s pop act around May/June time!

ABBA didn’t release a studio album in 1978, but a 40th anniversary half-speed master (with associated seven-inch box set and seven-inch picture discs) of 1979’s Voulez Vous is almost certainly in the schedule for next year. It’s hard to see what could be released this year – surely Universal wouldn’t have the balls to put out another variation of ABBA Gold!


Shirley Manson wears the album cover to Garbage’s Version 2.0

Garbage have already announced live shows in London in September under the banner Version 2.0: 20 Years Paranoid which will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 1998 album. That does rather suggest that they will reissue the album, as they did in 2015 for their debut. I love this ‘sophomore’ long-player, but please Garbage… no more ‘digital only’ super deluxe editions.

Let’s speculate a bit more… Eric Clapton‘s Backless is 40 years old in 2018 and hasn’t been reissued before, and some are expecting a Blood on the Tracks-related Bob Dylan box set in the last quarter of this year. The Rolling Stones have already put out a box set of 1978’s Some Girls, but could the 35 year old Undercover (produced with Chris Kimsey) be a contender, for re-release. Perhaps a long shot since Mick doesn’t necessarily speak fondly of the album. The Who are never shy about reissuing their back catalogue and 1978’s Who Are You does sit on the anniversary ley line, although Who’s Next from ’71 would have more commercial appeal as a super deluxe edition. Cherry Red bought Howard Jones‘ catalogue from Warners last year. After last year’s inaugural Best 1983-2017 we are bound to see some further activity in the near future, since they didn’t spend that cash for nothing. Elton John‘s 1970s output is box set light, and even when Universal did issue Goodbye Yellow Brick Road as a super deluxe edition in 2014, it was a bit of a mixed bag (“Miguel, featuring Wale” covering Bennie and the Jets, anyone?).

There’s probably some sets I’ve forgotten and as always, there will inevitably be plenty of releases that will come as if from nowhere, to surprise, delight and maybe disappoint us along the way. That’s part of the fun. Enjoy expanding your physical music collection in 2018 and I will look forward to your company.

  2. I avoid reissues of common , popular albums. Fleetwood Mac, it’s nice , but an original pressing in clean shape will sound better, since it’s all analog mastering. And it won’t cost much.
    I won’t be awaiting the Beatles White Album really either. They used eight track by then, the original George Martin mixes are fine. I don’t need Giles Martin to muck it up. The Esher demos are fun, but if they aren’t complete, what’s the point? All Analog mastering , no shortcuts.

    If I buy reissues, it will be because original vinyl is scarce, or never issued on vinyl. I got the Crowded House back catalog, Woodface, Together Alone, Afterglow, Time on Earth, either no vinyl or bad original vinyl. They sound good , even if sourced from digital, well-pressed. The first two are common, bought Intriguer the first time…

    I tended to like artists nineties and beyond that were, shall we say, mainstream but less popular to the general public. Sam Phillips, Maria McKee, Patty Griffin, that sort of thing. Bettie Serveerts Palomine is a real gem. Richard Thompson.

    Add my vote for Kate Bush Aerial and Red Shoes. I have most of the others, need Lionheart with clean artwork and I am seeking Sensual World UK vinyl.

  7. Can we get a list going on 2017 anniversary albums that never happened? Today, I was listening to 10000 Maniacs’ “In My Tribe,” one of my favorite albums of all time, and realized that it turned 30 last year. One of my formative evenings was seeing them open for R.E.M. at the Philadelphia Spectrum (RIP). After the concert, I couldn’t find it on CD anywhere, so I had to buy it on vinyl. Played it to death and, in the process, fell in love with Natalie Merchant. (My high school girlfriend was SO jealous.) Thanks to info provided by SDE, I purchased Natalie’s “Collection” and realized that I have missed so much of her output over the years. Fell in love again (my wife is SO jealous). Anyone know Natalie’s phone #?

    1. I’ll start you off with The Lilac Time self titled on Swordfish Records and Secrets of the Beehive by David Sylvian. Two of the most beautiful LPs ever pressed. There is nothing worse than comfortable Pop stars and artists who don’t need the cash and are well rounded individuals who have a mature view of the World. I prefer mine to be grasping and desperate willing to release their barrel scrapings. We need to start introducing these people to Leonard Cohen’s accountant. That’ll shift the buggers out of Cornwall and into the printers.

      1. Love The Lilac Time. I think the first record came out in 1988 in the U.S. The 2 disc Stephen Duffy compilation, Memory & Desire, is an excellent overview of his output. Wish I could find the film.

    1. I’ll be honest, I’m very skeptical of anniversary reissues a mere ten years after release. Barring certain situations (say a limited availability when first available), it’s just too soon. Most of the albums you list are way too recent in the collective consciousness to warrant revisiting.

      1. Probablyrustin, that’s all correct what you’re saying. But as I did lists of albums turning 10 years in my previous annual SDE previews (2015, 2016 and 2017), I thought not to miss it off this year as well. So I did it.
        Some albums got their 10th anniversary reissues – Manic Street Preachers’ “Send Away The Tigers” from 2007 which was reissued last year, for instance.

          10 years used to seem so, so long ago. Now, I have albums from 10 years ago that I still haven’t got around to playing! (Radiohead being one.) Time moves faster the older one gets.

            Although the number of albums getting 10th anniversary treatments is the smallest among all the anniversary reissues, 10 years indeed is a huge time span too. It’s just the older we get time moves faster and we don’t feel passing of time as slow as we used to when we were young(er). And you were absolutely right about that.
            I have albums about 10 years old in my collection I still haven’t got around to playing as well. I guess they still haven’t hit me to enjoy them the way they should be enjoyed. Still too recent? Maybe. I don’t know. I’ll see what the future brings on that question.

    Although I have all these albums and the quality of the sound is still good. It would be nice to have these albums reissued and remastered to get the sound quality up to todays standards.

    1. CORRECTION : To My Original Post above Blade Runner (1994) was Reissued NOT Remastered for The Blade Runner Trilogy (2007) as Disc One of Three.

  10. Can’t wait for the Seeds of Love reissue. I’m also really looking forward to the 80s David Bowie reissue, though I’m probably a minority there. I love Let’s Dance and even Never Let Me Down had the fantastic “Time Will Crawl.” I’m also purchasing the Pet Shop Boys reissues even though I bought them the first time around – I wish the Boys had done new liner notes, preferably with a booklet containing the old liner notes and the new comments. They don’t seem to be in agreement with these older reissues, so I assume that didn’t happen. I’ll also be onboard for the a-ha reissues.

    Paul, Toto have hinted at big plans for their 40th anniversary, with reissues of their back catalogue. It’s my understanding that it kicks off with the greatest hits collection 40 Trips Around the Sun this month. Any news on the reissues?

  13. Here is my wish list:
    The Beatles – White album – hope it is true that this will appear, but will be a bit miffed if the mono version is included as I (like many others) have the mono box. Would rather see a Giles Martin remix on the first two discs and then Esher demos across the rest. I have heard about two discs worth on a bootleg (one of the only decent sounding BLs I ever bought) and they were stunning. A DVD documentary would also be welcome.
    Elton John – 17/11/70 Expanded on CD just like the vinyl RSD release. Any other previously non-expanded Elton albums are more than welcome.
    Talk Talk – there must be stuff in the vaults along with live recordings and their classic albums, Colour of Spring, Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock truly deserve SDEs.
    Wings – the usual list, BTTE, London Town, RRS and Wildlife. The latter would be a good follow up the the potential White Album reissue given its indy nature.
    In reality, I bet only the White Album comes out……

    Peter Gabriel – SDE versions of his third, fourth album as well as a proper reissue of So…all three with all the b-sides, remixes and unreleased content.

    Cyndi Lauper – proper SDE’s of her first four albums (“She’s So Unusual” has been reissued twice now both missing important content). There are loads of edits, remixes and some unreleased stuff. A Night To Remember is crying out for a remaster.

    Culture Club – From Luxury to Heartache – OK so Boy doesn’t like the album very much but fans have been wanting a remastered, expanded version for decades now…

    Genesis – Live Box…this was proposed over a decade ago…Nick Davis was supposedly cataloging their live shows that were properly recorded for release…never came to fruition why not now? There will never be new Genesis material…this is something fans have wanted to ages.

    Laura Branigan – what would it take to get her back catalog properly remastered with all the b-sides and remixes and even some unreleased tracks?

    Steve Winwood – Will we ever get SDE version of Back in the High Life and Roll With It? Heck I’d even take a SDE version of Talking Back To The Night.

    1. As for Steve Winwood (and other artists who recorded for Island Records in the 1960’s & 1970’s), they signed recording contracts (and song publishing contracts with an Island Records subsidiary) that were fair by the standards of their era (given what a vinyl album sold for back then), but these contracts became unfair when Compact Discs became the main format for music sales.
      Several Island Records music groups invoked their right to prohibit the release of vault material, in an attempt to bring Universal Music(Island’s present-day owner) to the negotiating table. A compromise was reach with Steve Winwood, albeit one that didn’t give him everything that he wanted. For a time, Winwood loosened his restrictive grip, and he permitted a 2-CD deluxe edition of “Traffic-John Barleycorn Must Die”, and then a pointless deluxe edition of “Arc of a Diver”(whose only bonus material was a radio interview), but subsequently, Winwood never permitted any further deluxe editions.
      Apparently, the surviving members of “Free” & “Spooky Tooth” have similar grievances against Universal. All archival recordings by Traffic, Steve Winwood , Free and Spooky Tooth have been taken off the market, and all albums by these artists have reverted back to bare bones, no bonus tracks editions. Some have claimed that the thing Universal did that angered Free’s Paul Rodgers was Universal’s desire to release a 19-disc set by Free, that likely would have been the complete recording sessions. Rodgers said “No”.

    2. I’d really love to see White and Torch issued on CD or even download.

      Not the most prolific duo, 3 or 4 singles only, but despite both Parade and Let’s Forget having charting, they have never been rereleased in the digital domain.

      1. I’d also like to see a White and Torch compilation CD coming out at some point, but after all these years it’s very doubtful. They had five brilliant singles released in the early part of the eighties with Parade and Miracle probably being the best.

  17. Various artist “Now! That’s What I Call Music” (original UK & Ireland editions) compilations numbers 2 – 9 have to be reissued on double CD editions as well!
    First “Now!” compilation from 1983 is being reissued soon again.

    1. Now 1 is being released again again? It came out a while ago – first time on CD.

      The first proper now CD – 2cds with all of the tracks on the double album – was, I think, Now 11.

      As they are coming up to Now 100, wouldn’t a complete Now 1-100 set be something? Possibly even as a set of 10 DVDs It would certainly be a box set to treasure!

      I’d certainly like 2-10 to round off my collection. A decent 12×12 book with info on every artist and track would be good too.

      On a related point, were there any tracks used on the Now series that didn’t chart? When they were pumping them out every 12 weeks I’m sure they put some tracks on that they expected to be hits by the time the album came out. Did they miss at all?

        It got its first CD release in 2009.

        The first fully rounded “Now” CD compilation was “Now 10”, and not “Now 11”, actually. And they should really re-release all from number 2 to number 9 on CD to make “Now 100” festives in July worth it. They should start doing yearly compilations again as well. They stopped doing them in 1999 with “Millennium” series.

        A set of 10 or even more video DVDs and an updated 1 – 100 book would be the perfect accompanying thing to it, wouldn’t it?

        I’ll have to look in the latest “Now” book from a couple of years back to check for the info on the non-charting tracks if it exists, of course and then answer your question.

  18. Why has Madonna – Ray Of Light 20th Anniversary not been mentioned anywhere on this page?
    Patrick Leonard posting on Instagram all the demo tapes from the sessions suggests to me that something is happening in Ciccone camp.

      IMHO, that’s Madonna’s best album since 1989’s “Like A Prayer”.

    3. I work in the industry and sadly that just won’t happen. Madonna demands too much money for reissues which differ from the original versions. They can get away with coloured vinyl, or tweaks like boxset packaging, but she wanted a massive amount of money for an Erotica 25 special edition when Warner approached her.

Thanks for sharing Alex – I believe this Erotica 25 to be true because her online merch store emailed me about Erotica 25 yr anniversary shwag items like underwear and pics and silly items coming out to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Erotica. Does she just not get that she IS a legacy artist. No young person is going to become a new fan of hers, especially with the type of material she keeps putting out – atleast this decade anyway.

        I can only compare this situtation to one other artist – Cher – when cher returned to the spotlight in 1998ish for Believe – that track wasnt following current trends but literally made the vocoder THE trend for the next decade atleast. Madonna hasnt been making trends since Music/2000 but moreso following them and there’s plenty of younger, sexier female artists (society is clearly ageist) that will be given more attention.

        Fans like me dont want shitty bracelets and tshirts that have her image on them. Sorry im not a teen anymore. What I want, is incredible re-issues with her involvement. She needs to come down on price or WB needs to understand that there is demand and put out a really solid offering to command the high price they end up charging due to her greed.

      4. I don’t know that the demand for a huge amount of money is necessarily a mark of greed on her part. I think it’s a way of ending a conversation she’s not interested in having:

        Warner: “We want to do an anniversary edition of ______”
        Madonna: “I’m not sure about that. I don’t like looking back on stuff.”
        Warner: “It would be a wonderful opportunity to market your legacy and….”
        Madonna: “The album is fine as is and I want to focus on forward momentum.”
        Warner: “It would totally be an archival project–you’d only have to sign off on the work when we were done.”
        Madonna: “I really prefer to have it stand as it was and not muddy it with other material.”
        Warner: “but we can….”

        Etc.

        Versus:

        Warner: “We’d like to do an anniversary edition of _______”
        Madonna: “OK. Give me a billion dollars.”
        Warner: “Never mind.”

        Saves a ton of time that way.

      1. Madonna does not and won’t see herself as a “legacy artist” any time soon. She’s consistently been notoriously well known for refusing to “look back,” so to speak, and any archival/retrospective projects have been begrudgingly done as contract fillers. I would be pleasantly surprised if she allows anything at all to come out in terms of reissues before she stops releasing new music. And let’s be honest, we’d all much rather have SDEs of her classic albums than another “Rebel Heart”…

  19. So many great albums mentioned, but one I would add with slightly less appeal to most, though of major appeal to some. Magnum – Wings of Heaven is 30 this year. Their most successful album sales wise and one of the very few on a major label. Their earlier Jet and FM label albums have had remastered releases with bonus tracks but the 3 Polydor studio albums have never been re released, though the originals are still available.
    The sound on the original Wings of Heaven release is actually pretty decent, but I’d be up for a remaster and there must be some demo tracks out there. There are certainly a bunch of B sides, live and otherwise that could be collated into a nice package without too much work/cost, though obviously I’d prefer them to trawl the archives and find some hidden gems.

  20. Any news at all on a reissue of REM’s ‘Monster’ album this year? I would love to see one of the 1995 concerts as an extra (none of these shows have ever been officially released – apart from the ‘Road Movie’ DVD).

    1. Iain McCarthy, as R.E.M.’s “Monster” originally came out in 1994 and taking that the band is reissuing its catalogue albums when they hit 25 years since their original release, that album is going to be on the 2019 reissue schedule.

    1. Barring a change in Barry Gibb’s anti-outtakes mentality, there won’t be any Bee Gees archival projects. Capitol Records has now learned, that, in the future, if they buy a license to reissue a “Classic Rock” back catalog, they’ve got to get it in writing (in the contract) that previously unreleased material will be included. In the Bee Gees license, Capitol Records has been had. They’ve been conned.
      On the positive side, expect an expanded/remastered Steve Miller Band CD series to begin in 2018.

  25. I would love to see box sets of Bryan Ferry’ solo albums, especially the 80″s & 90″s albums. There must be plenty of demo’, mixes & unreleased stuff for those!. I think ant record label looking into doing a re release would do well to look at how Depeche Mode & Suede did theirs. Band interviews on the album, behind the scenes footage, unseen rare live stuff too. It’ a winner. Keep up the great work Paul, I love your website?

  26. I think nobody mentioned My Bloody Valentine. It’s not deluxe or super deluxe, ony a remastered reissue.

    In one week, on january 18, MBV will reissue Isn’t Anything and Loveless on 180 gram vinyl mastered from analog tapes using Studer A80 VU PRE and Neumann VMS 80 cutting lathe for full analog signal path. LP comes in a heavy weight tip-on style gatefold sleeve with poly lined printed inner sleeve. The vinyl is purely an analog cut and therefore does not include a download.

  27. Please please please please do not reissue, repackage, mess about with, remaster, remodel and every other re with the Kate Bush catalogue, leave all her work as it is. Theres something terribly not right about reissuing her work. The sound and packaging would not enhance what are absolute classics already.

    1. The merit in what you say is that there is every possibility that the legacy will be messed up.

      If the SDE versions were done well then, fantastic, if they are botched then we can’t stick the genie back into the bottle. Each of the first 5 albums presented with something along the lines of The Ties that bind. The key would be that I don’t think Kate would ever allow an official release of what became known as the Phoenix demos. These demos would underpin the success of the first three albums. If there are no demos then we are only reliant on a remix or remaster and live. Well which album do you stick the 1979 Hammersmith recording onto?

      The demos should be mostly split between The Kick Inside and Lionheart, other than those few that are specific to Never For Ever. This leaves the Hammersmith Recording to go onto that Never For Ever disc for although it was mostly a showcase for TKI and LH there are NFE tracks and falls bang in the middle of all three albums 1978, 1978 and 1980. They must have more live recordings than just Hammersmith and it would be quite OK to have three different full concerts at different ends of the tour. The video element would be reliant on having the FULL Hammersmith concert released, not just the selection that is only on VHS and laserdisc. Then to add to the promo videos there would have to be a significant delving into the TV archives, The 1979 Nationwide special would need to go somewhere…

      All in all there is enough material to make at least the first 5 LPs into something like a 3CD + 1DVD + 78 page book, the only one with a paucity of extra material is The Dreaming but secrecy has always been Kate’s watchword so maybe there is something that us mere mortals just don’t know about. Although I love my little ABBA / Oldfield type CD + DVD deluxe editions this would not be enough to satisfy, 4 or 5 bonus tracks and 27 minutes of video. In that case I would agree that there is something to be said for leaving well alone.

      D’you know, the more I think about it and the more I want it the more I realize it just is not going to happen. Unless, like 2014 we get the biggest possible shock.

    2. Aside from the various non-L.P. B-sides & 12″ mixes(that were included on her “This Woman’s Work” 8-CD set), Kate Bush may not have much rare material from the era of her first five albums. “Crawdaddy” magazine asked her (shortly after she released “Hounds of Love”) if she had “Dumped”(recorded, but rejected) much music. She said that she prefers to think of it as “Resting”, and indicated that the only album sessions (up to that point) to have produced much unreleased music were the sessions for her second album “Lionheart”. Still, I think that it IS very unreasonable for Ms.Bush to prohibit a DVD release for her video programs.

      1. Yes you are absolutely right, there will be little dumped material, material that had the full treatment but was rejected, particularly from The Dreaming onwards. The key to a successful SDE box though will be the early demos (1975 to 1978) and although around 30-odd have escaped over the years Andrew Powell talks about having about tapes of about 140 “songs” recorded. When you listen to what A-Ha released as demos with various Take on Me caterwaulings (very brave) I just can’t see Kate sanctioning it. It would need a major volte-face from Kate or someone would have to stitch her up and I can’t see that happening either. So every time I can see why it should or could happen I get slapped in the face with the reality that it won’t happen…..When you look at the tosh that the Eagles have just released under the misnomer of an SDE there is material enough to at least better that by some distance for all of the early albums. To be honest just to hear the track “Never For Ever” would be enough. It’s name appeared on the earliest promo posters and press releases and then at the 11th hour it disappeared. Both The Kick Inside and Lionheart exist in what Mac fans would call alternate versions and half of Never For Ever with things like “beatbox” versions. It would be a crying shame to never hear them all.

  28. Regarding the Bowie reissue program, my dream scenario for 2018, is not one, not two but three SDE sets. My reasoning is to approach separately the 80’s albums and singles, the 80’s mixes and the Tin Machine / Sound & Vision era, as follows:

Cherry Red should re-release Kim Wilde’s ’90s albums – “Love Moves”, “Love Is.” and eventually “Now & Forever”, and not the first three ones that got their expanded treatments way back in 2009 already. That’s what her fans want the most. A first proper promo video collection DVD as well. That’s all long overdue.

      1. Keep in mind that Cherry Red OWNS the first 3 Kim Wilde albums (The RAK Records recordings which Cherry Red recently bought from Warner Music). Wilde’s later MCA recordings are owned by Universal Music and would have to be licensed.
        Cherry Red’s work with two Universal-licensed MCA Wilde albums(“Teases and Dares” & “Another Step”) was less than stellar, with a few bonus tracks dubbed from vinyl. Admittedly, in the years since then, Cherry Red’s mastering and vault research has improved.

        1. I’ve read somewhere that Cherry Red have bought licensing rights from Universal Music for Kim Wilde’s ’90s albums as they couldn’t see them doing themselves too.
          Universal Music thought they wouldn’t pass on the market as well as “Close” which is the most successful album in her entire career ever so they let Cherry Red doing them instead.
          I still can’t believe that Kim Wilde doesn’t have a proper promo video collection DVD yet, whereas some minor artists from the ’80s and beyond like Go West et al have it.

  40. 2018 is also the 30th anniversary of U2’s Rattle and Hum. Back in 2013 they were supposedly doing some video shoots for the 25th anniversary but I guess that was delayed because of the Songs of Innocence, Joshua Tree anniversary Tour and now Songs of Experience projects. There was a ton of filming done especially for the Joshua Tree 3rd leg tour in North America tour. U2s set lists were quite varied back then by todays standards so bonus live DVDs and CDs could be very reach indeed. Annoyingly, they seem to have problems including cover versions in their live releases (cheap bastards) so expect incomplete concerts if they do.

    The 3 already released are very well done I think and all came out on separate vinyl and cd releases but much of the extras are only available in the box including vinyl cd and memorabilia, also decent books etc. Looking forward to these releases

    Sony Music are reissuing the original War of The Worlds 1978 double 12” vinyl album, on 26th January 2018….. and Close Encounters soundtrack has just issued on 40th Anniversary CD on LA LA Land….. plus………Universal buying up ZTT and STIFF publishing rights…… I’m sure they will want a return on their investment quickly….. so maybe something for Record Store Day there!

      i just noticed the change in the running order (sorry, have to do some other things from time to time).
      First impression (on a computer) is that it sadly doesn’t make my life easier, but haven’t tried out on my smartphone yet.

      Two thoughts on this from me:
      1. Would it be too much to ask for a button where i can choose which running order i prefer (from eldest to latest and the other way round) and
      2. if it stays this way it would be nice if you could use stronger lines between the different discussions to make it clearer, where one stops and the next one begins. Sorry, i’m older than 50 and not as hawk-eyed as i used to be. ;-)

      As i’m not into any kind of technics and programming whatsoever and obviously don’t have a clue how much work will be necessary to fix these two points i apologize in advance for making you work even harder than you already do.

      1. Can you explain why you think it doesn’t make life easier?

        Before, you had to scroll all the way down to the bottom, to find new comments. Now, since latest comments are at the top, you just scroll a little bit to find the most recent and then work ‘up’.

        Might take a bit of getting used to, but surely this is better than how it was, regardless of whether you are using PC/MAC or a mobile device.

        What do others think?

        1. Have thought about it a bit.
          I think that my main problem is that i’m used to reading top to bottom. I find it difficult to start at the bottom then go up to the next comment and then sometimes find that it isn’t, but an answer to another comment placed even higher. That was my main reason for asking about stronger lines between several discussions.
          I normally visit the blog several times a day but not so regularly that there is always only a small amount of new comments to look at. And for bigger numbers of comments i find it a strain on my eyes to keep looking where the next paragraph that i have to read is.
          I read the blog mostly on a computer (where i had no problem with using the scroll bar to find new comments, i think it might be more difficult with a smartphone though) and only on the train in the morning and evening via smartphone, so still can’t say if i like it better there.

          1. I intend to give the comments a proper upgrade this year… until then will wait for more feedback before chopping and changing.

  53. 1. The SDE Game is a function of price, there are those box sets on the margin, where price dictates a decision to buy – So when is the dump down coming this year for those items holding in my amazon basket ? Tull ? REM ? JL Hooker ? Magnetic Fields ?

    2. Just buy it in 2018 and don’t ask questions or fight price – Bob14/BOTT, White Album SDE, a surprise gift from Van Morrison.

    3. Why Dylan is the gold standard – he doesn’t bloat the box sets with the original albums, remastered, not remastered, Wilsonofied, mono, quad, 5.1 etc.

    4. I don’t think so – Roxy Music, See note 1, go around $50.

  57. It would be nice to see Paul Rodgers change his mind and release what was promised over 5 years ago, the 19 disc boxset of Free’s “From The Shadows “box. Lots of unreleased and alternative takes similar to the John Martyn and Sandy Denny 19 disc sets released a few years ago. It is 50 years this year since Free first formed and released their debut album Tons Of Sobs.

  58. Every year it seems weirder that there has never been a Bob Seger box or special edition of any of his albums – ok, the two live albums were remastered half a dozen years ago with one extra track each but thats it. In fact some of the early Capitol albums are not even available.

    There are so many unreleased tracks out there and he has sold a truckload of albums so is deserving. A career overview 4CD type thing please!

    More Jethro Tull, please! “Heavy Horses” is on pre-order for me (I’m excited!), but each and every one of these releases has been tremendous in every respect – from packaging to Steve Wilson’s remixes. I would love to see the book version of “Benefit,” as well as the others that haven’t been done yet, at least up t0 and including “Broadsword.”

    Take note: if you want to know what re-releasing a box set is all about, go pick up one of these JT book releases, even if you’re not a fan of the music. For me, it has become the standard by which to compare all others. (And, being a JT fan for the last 35 years doesn’t hurt, either!)

      Japan should be added to the list as well as – barring “Tin Drum” and some very hard to find Music On Vinyl issues years back there has been nothing available on vinyl for eons!

      I’d also like to see some more BAD deluxe editions. I’d hoped “This Is Big Audio Dynamite” would have been the first of a series but the momentum/ enthusiasm / sales obviously want there. Maybe a proper boxset with the plethora of rare and unreleased material (inc the never released album will surface one day).

      One artist I missed from my list earlier was the high likelihood of New THE THE material this year now Matt has overcome his writers block (as evidenced in the great documentary that premiered a few months back and from which the recent boxset was taken). The doc at least should surface properly but at the Q&A he said a new album was not out of the question now.
      And of course there is catalogue aplenty from him that could / should see the light of day at some point (SDE’s of the Sony (assuming his fall-out over not being paid for Soul Mining reissue gets sorted) and Nothing albums plus the unreleased / long deleted albums too!

  69. For my taste, I’m happy to see OMD a lot busier and secure in their lot for the year than either The Cure or Duran Duran, as all three acts turn 40. Their record label guy told me some of the pie-in-the-sky thinking for the anniversary, but what can definitely be said is that it is intended to cover a six month period from the anniversary of the first single this autumn to the anniversary of the first album (spring 2019), and it will feature a 40-A-side double CD retrospective, the 40th single off of which was actually written as a recent B-side but proved too good for the purpose. Disc 3 will be down to fan vote (so Firegun twelve times over, then). No news at all on live activity, unfortunately, beyond a repeat of something they’ve already done…

    1. That’s great news about OMD. I’ve been maintaining a personal collection of their singles and b-sides in lieu of an official 2 CD comprehensive singles collection and follow-up to Navigation.

    The best news is a new Lilac Time LP this year. Always a red letter day when that happens.

    The Kick Inside, if it doesn’t happen this year it will never happen. What I would give for a Joshua Tree style box, six slabs of vinyl or 6CDs, a DVD and a lovely coffee table book with some new Gered or JCB images. There is enough to do it “material” wise I just think there is enough to do it “Will” wise.

    Earth Moving by Mike Oldfield, I know there isn’t a lot of love for this album, but I’ve always been very fond of it. If not that then do an SDE for TBII, if there is something like the TBI in the vaults it will be stellar.

    Here’s to 2018 and a bigger, better SDE.

  74. I would love to see The Cure’s “Standing On The Beach” re-issued as a deluxe edition with a bonus CD of all the 12-inch mixes. These have never been on CD before. All their previous DeluxeEdition re-issues did not include 12-inch remixes. They are long overdue

  76. A Sting’s Ten Summoner’s Tales 25th Anniversary Edition would be nice. I.m.h.o. his last great album. It’s also a shame that there was no deluxe edition (30th anniversary) of Nothing Like The Sun last year. Both albums had many great b-sides and a few remixes, a 5.1 mix, filmed concerts, etc. from these periods.
    An Extended / Deluxe Edition / 30th Anniversary of Steve Winwood’s Roll With It would be nice too.
    The Band’s Music From The Big Pink was released in 1968, Billy Joel’s 52nd Street in 1978 and his last album River Of Deams in 1993 (still hoping for the completely transmitted Frankfurt concert, excerpts on the My Life Boxset), ….

    They say Jimmy has all the original recordings of most of the live shows.
    They should do a release schedule similar to Dave Matthews Live Trax Series or Pearl Jam official bootleg series which are superb.
    I have many, many live bootlegs of Zeppelin and never tire of the longer songs, the guitar work and the chat that Plant does between songs ( a lot of chat)
    The soundboard recordings are excellent quality and I would certainly pay (again) to have more polished but as a box set, book, photos from the night etc.

    1. Jimmy Page’s collection of mono soundboard tapes was stolen from his home many years ago, though presumably, if Jimmy Page wanted to release them, he could clone them from bootlegs. These days, there’s no need to pay big money for unofficial Japanese CD’s. You can find a treasure trove of those recordings(especially the 1975 tour) as free downloads on the internet. Official releases of those recordings would sound exactly the same (no better, no worse) than the unofficial releases.

  79. I’d venture to say that Madonna has no interest in reaching back to revisit her past catalog. She still considers herself a relevant, contemporary hitmaker and starting a reissue campaign would contradict all of that for her. Not a dig at her at all, but Madonna is still about where she is going, not yet about where she’s been.

    1. She HAS released older material for the last 2 RSD’s and last year Rhino put out the limited gold vinyl Immaculate Collection. I mean, they are putting older era product out. I just dont understand who decides what comes out? Last years RSD of the Argentinian “Dance Mix” was super weak. Why couldn’t it be something like a SDE Like a Prayer?!

  80. Climie Fisher released two excellent albums in the 80’s that should be properly reissued with all b-sides and remixes. A few years back Edsel did a lousy job by releasing “Everything…Plus” and “Coming In For The Kill…Plus”. Both were very shotty reissues with only additional B-sides and no remixes. Both were also quickly out of print. It would be great to finally have both albums with all the remixes and b-sides released (probably as a 2 x 2cd). Should be a shoe-in for Cherry Pop.

    1. I think reissuing albums that were all ready reissued with B sides etc is not as important as reissuing albums that have never been on CD or are missing bonus tracks. I have the Climie Fisher CDs & they are great..what is missing?

    I want to thank you for this preview for this year. I hope that some of these reissues and box-sets will be released. I would like to see The Beatles – “The White Album”, because I really like last year’s box set of Sgt. Pepper.

    I also would love to see a reissue of Kate Bush – “The Kick Inside” and/or “The Hounds Of Love”. But I am afraid that this is not going to happen. But it would be great if it would happen !

    It would be a good time for the Eurythmics to reissue their albums as an SDE. So far they have never reissued their albums. They are one of the most successful British bands of the 80’s.

    As an Eric Clapton fan, it would be nice to see more of his albums reissued as an SDE. “Backless” is a great album and as you mentioned it celebrates it’s 40th anniversary.

    And I guess that there will be a fourth box set from David Bowie. There also will be something from The Rolling Stones … just like every year ! Someone mentioned here that they were working on a new album.

I heard from a source near to the band that it came down to them or T’Pau for Circa to throw their weight behind re marketing costs and we can see which band won! Hugely underrated band. Would also love 2CD versions of Goodbye Mr Mackenzie first 3 albums and Thr Big Dish first 3 albums done the same

      Cherry Red did the 2nd album an they aren’t averse to rips so I had assumed it was a contractual issue.
      Yep – hens teeth indeed. Very rare to find one for less than £80-£90 and I just can’t justify it.
      I did at least find some decent MP3s of it a few years ago on a dodgy Russian site (fear Davy Henderson will never have seen any royalties from that purchase sadly).

      1. Back in the 90s it took me years to track down a CD copy of Uh! Tears Baby via an Usenet wants list and a kind music fan in Glasgow with whom I still have contact. Also wangled a CD rip of all the vinyl extended versions and b-sides from both albums. Super Popoid Grooves indeed!

        A friend of mine who pushes for a deluxe reissue and has communicated with various people who have a say in it says “I think part of the reason we’re not seeing it is that Davey Henderson is a bit embarrassed that he “went mainstream” for an album or two, even if everybody I know of considers it some of his best stuff. He hasn’t disowned it, but I think it’s a case where you don’t have the artist agitating for a re-release. I suspect if he got behind it, it’d appear sooner rather than later.”

      I don’t think they will do that. All Mod Cons and Sound Affects have been the first Jam albums to get the luxury of Deluxe Edition versions 10 years ago. After those two albums, they released Super Deluxe Editions of The Gift, Setting Sons and then 1977 (for the first two LPs) last year.

      I wish they would release Sound Affects as Super Deluxe Edition but I doubt it as they already made a Deluxe Edition and probably don’t have enough material for a SDE. Same for All Mod Cons. Over the past two years, Polydor also released the Fire And Skill ‎live box set on CD (and the same shows on vinyl) instead of keeping them for future SDE releases. That’s why I don’t think they plan to release All Mod Cons or Sound Affects as SDE. They will probably focus on the Style Council and Paul Weller solo albums now.

  107. I’m surprised you didn’t flag up the 30CD Wishbone Ash set due in April, Paul – details have been available for a few weeks and it even covers their ’80s ouevre! :-)

    In other news… at the very margins of the core SDE scene… RPM will be releasing, circa April, a 3CD clamshell box of unreleased Gordon Beck material spanning 1964-84, mostly weighted around the late 60s and early 70s, with a fantastic 12,000 word booklet by Tubby Hayes biographer Simon Spillet and unpublished period photos by Jak Kilby and others. Gordon was a British jazz piano giant who emerged in the late 60s, working in a series of fascinating combos, although his personality – as Simon’s notes attest – was perhaps the reason his career didn’t flourish more widely, like his piano contemporary John Taylor.

    Tied in with that project, 35 minutes of unreleased spring 1968 studio sessions by American lounge/jazz singer Joy Marshall backed by the short-lived Gordon Beck Quartet (including John McLaughlin) – material NOT on the 3CD set – will be released as a standalone heavyweight vinyl / CD, in collaboration with a vinyl specialist label TBC.

  108. While so many of these re-issues would be great to see, I’m really hoping to hold in my mitts a copy – on blu-ray – of the restored, full version, of the BBC / WGBH 1995 documentary ‘Dancing in the Streets: The History of Rock n’ Roll’.

    Sort out the rights, get it done. It’s really one of the few essential documents we have on the subject we come to celebrate here every day.

    The Longpigs – Any chance of deluxe versions of “The Sun is Often Out” and “Mobile Home” been released?. I know that the complilation album had live and demo takes, but there is still a lot of alternative takes and remixes out there.

    Tool – “Undertow”, their first full official release (as a full lenght album) came out in 1993. Be nice to see a deluxe version of this , preferably a live – blu ray performance included as well would be nice.

      Wasted opportunities + fans have been waiting for so Long for some decent reissues.

    2. No bonus tracks on “Count Three & Pray”. That is a missed opportunity. The other Berlin and Wang Chung at least have many bonus remixes. Looks pretty decent to me. Will get those for sure.

Neil: Will def. be purchasing Berlin’s Love Life and both Wang Chung CD’s…too bad they aren’t reissuing the “To Live & Die In LA” album….no bonus tracks on Berlin’s “Pleasure Victim” (which states on their website the 12″ mix of “Sex” has never been on CD which is a lie as that mix appeared on the original CD release and “Count Three” has no bonus tracks whatsoever.)

  115. Agree with you Paul that Macca’s team will go with Flaming Pie as the next Super deluxe.
    It’s a great album but is too recent. He needs to finish the 70’s off with at least Red Rose, Back to the Egg and London Town.
    Whilst non of these albums are perfect each one carries enough classic Macca songs to warrant remastering and demo versions etc.
    Arrow through me is one of my personal favourites from his back catalogue.

  117. Minor quibble but Abba the Album was released in 1978 in some territories, including the UK. Surely this year is the 40th anniversary of Abba The Movie – all of that unused concert footage must be sitting around somewhere…… Plus, picture disc of standalone 1978 single Summer Night City – perhaps with unreleased versions?

    Like to add in a mention/ request for the Stevie Nicks deluxe editions to continue this year – the real gems should come with all of the unreleased ‘Mirror Mirror’ album as par of a ‘Rock a Little’ package, plus there is an abundance of extras for The Other Side of the Mirror too, including an unreleased filmed concert.

  118. ‘Beggars Banquet’ in its original ‘RSVP’ white cover would be nice. Like the recent ‘Satanic Majesties’ reissue box set, only hopefully with bonus tracks and outtakes (‘Did Everybody Pay Their Dues’ an acoustic ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ the alternate ‘No Expectations’ etc). Don’t think there’s much chance of ABKCO putting out any rare or bonus stuff though…

We are left with White Music, Go 2, Mummer, The Big Express and the last pair, Apple Venus and Wasp Star. Based on conjecture and a fair wind, I suspect it will be English Settlement which hasn’t had a Surround Series seeing-to yet. It all hangs on where those pesky original masters have been hiding – Andy Partridge has unearthed a few gems thus far (if ES does get a remix from Steven, it’ll be the sixth in the series).

  125. This year is 40 years since Dire Straits released their first album. With their induction into the Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame this year as well, it would seem to be a good time to give their first album an SDE, or in fact to redo the catalogue.
    Prince also released his first album 40 years ago, and 30 years ago saw the release of Lovesexy. Not sure if the estate will feel either of these anniversaries are something they want to commemorate, but hopefully we will see new stuff this year.
    Finally, one of the most under-compiled catalogues in music as far as SDE’s and remasters go hits some big milestones. Madonna celebrates the 35th anniversary of her self-titled debut, and the 20th anniversary of one of her biggest sellers, Ray Of Light. There is lots of stuff that could be added in to make decent SDE’s of both of these albums, or perhaps start a long overdue re-examination of her back catalogue!
    Not for nothing, both Queen’s debut and Meat Loaf’s Bat Out Of Hell II are celebrating big anniversaries this year, 45 and 25 respectively.

      1. Paul, the fact U2 only reissued Zooropa in the Achtung Baby bod Set was a sore point for many fansainly due to the hefty price tag of that box.

        Do you think U2 will finally reissue Zooropa on it’s own?

        Also, we need something from Kate Bush – her CDs sound very “low” compared to modern remasters and a comprehensive career spanning collection (singles, best of, etc) is long overdue.

        Level 42 have released multi-disc sets for most of their albums however the first three are still only single disc expanded editions – any chance these may come out? Also a super deluxe of international smash World Machine would be welcome.

        1. I don’t think U2 will reissue Zooropa, to be honest. The super deluxe of Achtung Baby was about £85, IIRC. Quite a lot for 2011 I guess, but today’s standard for a massive 10-disc large format set, not ridiculous. I know the Uber deluxe was over £200…

    1. The only remaining Cream vault materials are concert recordings (more versions of the same songs). “Fresh Cream” is the only Cream studio album for which the multitracks exist. All of the multitracks for Cream songs partly or totally recorded at Atlantic Studios in NYC were lost in a vault fire over 40 years ago.

  136. Not being an 80’s/90’s pop fan, there’s very little on offer in this list. Add in the fact that Vinyl is of no interest and you’d think they didn’t want my money.

    As to the commentary, lots to disagree with. The Roxy Music release is “mildly controversial”?!? You’ve got to be joking. People have been up in arms about the weakness of this one.

    Also, if Tin Machine don’t make the next box, it’d be ridiculous. And not just the debut. The second album has come classic Bowie, and the live album is getting rarer. Given how poor Let’s Dance and Tonight are – and that Never Let Me Down wasn’t exactly brilliant – the only thing that can save the box is the Tin Machine material. I’m also pretty sure I read there are ownership problems with Labyrinth, but I may be wrong. What we don’t need – IMO – are a bunch of remixes from this era. We really really don’t. Urgh.

    Finally – you say Kate Bush is unlikely, I’d wager, impossible. None of her CD’s need remastering, but box sets of each (at least up to Red Shoes) would be irresistible. Sadly, it ain’t gonna happen, is it.

    1. Re Roxy, the general consensus is that it’s a great box, just overpriced. It’s not ‘Flowers in the Dirt’ – hence ‘mildly’ controversial.

      I like Tin Machine II but what’s that got to do with whether it will be in the next box set? Different label, different decade… there’s plenty of reasons that it might not be included. I’m not even sure if they’ll put the first album in… a separate Tin Machine box makes more sense.

      1. If I remember correctly, Bowie was always keen on pointing out that Tin Machine was a group, not just him. I highly doubt this will be reissued in a Bowie solo box. Just doesn’t make sense.
        And if Bowie’s 80’s remixes are not included in the next box set, I will not be buying it. Those are an absolute must.

        1. He did say that, although he ‘let’ Tin Machine be included in the Japanese mini-LP Bowie reissue and take its place in the box set in that series.

      2. Put me down for a re-issued back-catalogue of Kate Bush. Her body of work is of a size that lends itself to a price-point that many could afford (I suspect). Other than the ridiculously good Tull boxes, my favourite formats are now the comprehensive ‘complete studio album’ collections, be they vinyl or cd (Roxy Music, Queen, Steve Hackett, Bowie, amongst many others). Include the live EP, and a disc of other bits and bobs not on the albums, and I’d pre-order in an instant. I know there was such a set decades ago, but it’s long out of print and requires updating anyway.

  138. Being a vinyl record buyer I’m personally hoping for the 2nd box set from Bruce Springsteen which should include de studio albums from Tunnel of Love to maybe Magic. Also reissues of all REM albums after Automatic for the people, as well at the second batch of NIN albums.     Im baffled by the lack of Madonna re-releases. Can you shed some light on this? That said, the few items that have been remastered (celebration greatest hits) or rereleases (Madonna full album discography with cardboard sleeves) are TERRIBLE so not even sure I want anything redone if it cant be done right.
    Do you know anyone at WB, Rhino, etc? Can i offer some exec some guidance on how to put a package together? For instance, we just missed a 25th anniversary for Erotica and this year would be the 20th anniversary for Ray of Light. I’d love to help someone at her label put a solid package together that fans would appreciate.

    At the minimum, an RSD offering for a 20th anniversary ROL release, limited, numbered, silver vinyl with Has To Be included – boom!

    1. I don’t know for certain, but my educated guess is that she has control of her masters and has no interest in spending time on the past, which has been a recurring issue in terms of any archival releases from her. Warner would be all better very reissues if they had the say in it—look what they did with Prince when they owned the catalog work. There has not been a single catalog release since she left them, even though there MUST be a decent return on investment potential.

      I think she’s terrified of doing anything that might make her start to seem like a “legacy” act. As a woman, especially, she’s constantly fighting criticism about continuing in the industry “at her age,” even as we wait eagerly for new music from male acts twenty and thirty years older than she is. She’s on her own in this—there is no other female recording artist who has been in the game as long as she has who still relies primarily on new recordings of new material for her career—no standards albums, no covers albums, no albums written primarily by other people, no “ let’s re-record some of my greatest hits” acoustic albums. In over 30 years, there’ve been only 4 compilations: Immaculate Collection (a contractual obligation), Something to Remember (part of the campaign for Evita), GHV2 (which she detested and had nothing to do with, and it shows), and Celebration (with her involvement, but also a contractual obligation).

      If I were taking bets on anything remotely resembling “looking back,” I’d expect a post-Warner’s collection at the end of the current contract and MAYBE (huge maybe) something like a re-recording/acoustic album if she decides to do something like the Tears of a Clown-style residency that she was talking about last year.

      I think the only way we’ll get SDE’s is either in another 10-15 years when she might feel more nostalgic, or if one of the independent labels like Cherry Red or Edsel come to her with a big fat wad of cash and a good proposal, but I don’t think any of those labels have the resources or money to make that happen.

      But damn do I wish we’d get something. A Like a Prayer SDE would be amazing. A box set of unreleased outtakes and demos would also be great.

      1. Thanks CJ! I agree with you on what you said and on what I know about M but the truth is we’re not getting any younger either, as fans, and everyday that passes im less interested in investing in another set.
        As an example, 10 years ago, I was signing change.org petitions demanding the release of the Blond Ambition tour in full that Alek Keshishian, apparently, shot for Truth or Dare. Today, I dont even own a dvd player and am in the middle of disposing of much of my physical collection. Had they released this dvd 10 years ago, they would have gotten 20 bucks from me. If they release it today, I may consider buying or renting from a streaming service for much less because im not as excited by this stuff like I once was and I dont buy physical product unless it is limited or special in some way (ie: RSD)
        Dont get me wrong, when WB/Rhino/whoever does something right, im the first to get it – such as the limited Immaculate Collection Gold Vinyl from 2017 or the 2 RSD limited editions, albeit weak, that weve gotten so far for Madonna (can we please leave the early era for the next RSD!)
        I hope she and her business team understand that as time passes, interests and desires pass and im not always going to be itching to own or hear her SDE’s. She needs to do some type of balancing.

    2. What’s wrong with the Madonna cardboard sleeve box? I paid $25 for 11 albums that I hadn’t previously purchased. That collection was aimed at consumers like me who own very little of Madonna’s catalogue. You sound like a true fan who probably already has most, if not all, of her discography, so the box wouldn’t be a worthwhile purchase for you. So why ‘TERRIBLE’? For me, it is perfect.

      1. Hey Andy – when it was released, it was selling for $80 dollars. I didnt see a product that reflected an $80 price tag. I assume WB realized this as well and dropped it to $30 within 6 months of release which is much more reasonable. That said, there’s nothing on there that you couldnt pick up at the $1 bin at any used record store. At minimum a remastered collection? Her concept album, “Im Breathless” which was inspired by Dick Tracy (not the soundtrack), which includes Vogue, was also missing from the set. For under $25 its an easy way to get the full Madonna collection on cd and call it a day. For a big Madonna fan like me who is thirsty for SDE’s and special editions, this was just another disappointment from the Madonna camp.

    1. David Austin said that there are two unreleased songs ready to go. Also that there are 23 live songs from the ‘Cover To Cover’ shows. The next released proposed will be a 10 song duets cd which has songs already available.

      The Trojan souls & volume 2 LWP were just ideas that did not come to fruition.

  156. I really enjoyed this year’s 1967 – Sunshine Tomorrow release by the Beach Boys and I hope we’ll get a similar release for 1968 (Friends and 20/20, although I’m aware the latter was only released in 1969).
    Another series of which I’m looking forward to the next chapter is the Super Furry Animals’ reissue programme. They might wait until Guerilla’s 20th anniversary in 2019, but I hope they won’t leave such a gap.
    I’m also hoping for deluxe reissues of The Kinks’ 1970’s albums following Everybody’s in Show-Biz.
    And Elvis Costello’s post-Warner albums are in need of a reissue programme gathering all stray tracks. Painted from Memory turns 20 this year…
    Finally, Paul Young’s No Parlez will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year. Wouldn’t that be a good occasion to finally get the LP version of that album on CD?

    1. ABKCO managed to find a way to celebrate ‘Satanic Majesties’ turning 50 last year (I’m not sure how many other people did…) so it surely beggars* belief that they wouldn’t do something for one of the Stones’ most highly-regarded albums – with ‘Let It Bleed’ to follow next year, perhaps?
      The evolution of ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ alone is good for half a disc, and Martin Elliott’s book suggests there are plenty of other fascinating gems in the vault from this period.
      (It’s got to be a safer bet than a deluxe reissue of ‘Undercover’ anyway??)

    Given how protective she has been of her whole career I hold little hope for Kate Bush to go down the SDE path.However in his blog a few days ago where he mentioned the SDE’s of the Porcupine Tree albums In Absentia and Deadwing that are coming out later in the year(vinyl’s before that)Steven Wilson said his dream projects were to work with the Kate Bush and Prince catalogues.Can you imagine how great a series of her albums done in the Tull format would be?
    The Springsteen Born In The USA box is coming just not this year.There have been 5 years between each of the album boxes so that puts that one in 2020.Big question is whether the unreleased Nebraska sessions both solo and with E St Band will be part of it.The concert film will be a Giants Stadium show which was professionally shot by NFL Films.
    Bootleg Series Blood On The Tracks has been ready to go for a couple of years.The issue is that there desire to have a 6-8 disc edition of their Bootleg Series releases has them considering including Desire and Street Legal sessions in that box or leaving them for later.The other Dylan archival project that is close to completion is a Rolling Thunder Review tour box like the 1966 tour box.Inclusion of Hard Rain and maybe even Renaldo and Clara video is likely.2019 is likely release for this.

  165. An enticing list of SDE issues planned (or speculatively planned) for 2018. Like many, I’m sure, The Beatles ‘white album’ is top of the list. To hear at least “Revolution 9” in a 5.1 mix would be amazing, but of course the entire original studio album remastered in 5.1 would be absolute bliss! The Paul McCartney Archive Collection SDE sets I’m still hoping for are: “Back to the Egg,” “Red Rose Speedway” and “London Town.” Kate Bush’s “The Dreaming” and “Hounds of Love” as remastered deluxe sets would be most desirable, as well as anything (or even better; EVERYTHING from The Police in SDE packaging with bonus tracks :)

    1. There is a BluRay out there, but it’s difficult to find, and I’m not sure it’s official. I think it would be a great contender for a Criterion Collection edition with bonus performances, interviews, the complete soundtrack, and other bonus material. With Criterion’s relationship with Demme already established, it would be a great match, and they have already done some music releases in the past.

      A Criterion BluRay of True Stories would also be good, including a CD soundtrack with both the band’s versions and the versions from the film, which only ever got a vinyl release.

As well autumn stone from the small faces, Ogden’s get a three disc vinyl reissue too, the links preservation is a def and wellers 60th may see some stuff including a new album. Steve Ellis from love affair and p p Arnold’s new material will see the light of day.

I wish they’d do something proper with Tina Turner’s Capitol/Parlophone albums…sure Private Dancer was reissued twice but there are still some unreleased recordings as well as a few songs from the early 80’s never on CD (like “Crazy in the Night” from the Summer Lovers soundtrack)…1986’s “Break Every Rule” has a litany of b-sides and remixes never on CD (including a handful of unreleased tracks some produced by Bryan Adams) and 1989’s “Foreign Affair” has tons of remixes.

    Would love for proper deluxe editions of the Eurythmics catalog…there is a wealth of unreleased songs especially from the first five albums (including 1984).

    1. I can’t get nderstand why NOTHING has been done for Break Every Rule. It’s never even gotten just a straight remaster. Private Dancer may have sold more, but Break Every Rule was the more interesting album of the two, and there are so many great b-sides that have NEVER gotten a CD release. Plus it would be an excellent chance to correct the oversight of not including “One of the Living” on the PD reissue.

    1. I’m really disappointed that Annie and Dave didn’t get in his year, but I think it’s a reflection of the HOF’s bias toward bands with a high profile in the US. While Eurythmics were pretty successful in the states, it wasn’t anything like the level they attained elsewhere. There’s also a really miserable and unfair bias against electronic music, and while they went on the play plenty of “real” (I hate that term) music, the US memory is of them primarily as an electronic group.

      But they were one of the most deserving bands nominated this year, as far as I’m concerned.

    1. This set is actually the one I’ve looked most forward to since the start of the series. Bowie’s 80s work has gotten the least attention in terms of reissues. The classic 70s stuff, of course, has been visited again and again, and the 90s and 00s stuff has even had many reissues, but those 80s albums, despite all their success, got what seemed like the bare minimum of acknowledgement from an archival front. I really hope we get all the remixes, but also all the b-sided and soundtrack pieces also.

  181. I know of at least one long-promised box set that almost certainly *won’t* be coming out in 2018, and I can think of no article I’d love to see more on SDE than an investigative piece on what the heck is going on with it.

    For many years now, there have been regular promises of an exhaustive box set in the works that would comprehensively cover the Band pre-_Music From Big Pink_ — collecting up all their recordings with Ronnie Hawkins, all the Levon and the Hawks recordings, and all the viable Woodstock/Basement-Tapes-ish recordings from 1967-1968 that *don’t* include Dylan playing/singing, most of which have not been released. I’ve been hearing “it’s coming” for so long that I just don’t believe it anymore. It would be so very nice if someone that folks involved might actually talk to would investigate what’s going on with this, and whether it’ll ever happen.

  189. I have no insider knowledge, so this is just a guess, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see something out of the King Crimson camp related to The construKction of Light and The Power to Believe. Maybe they’re in the simple CD/DVD format, or a box set covering both albums and related material much like Sailors’ Tales or the box covering the 80s.

    These sets seem to come out of nowhere when you least expect it and unless Fripp really hated that era, why not take this box set series all the way?

    And while an upcoming new album from Judas Priest may be the only thing they want to release this year, this is the 30th anniversary for Ram It Down. We got a Turbo set last year and other reissue albums before that, so I would imagine that reissue series would continue.

    Finally, I wouldn’t mind another batch of Scorpions reissues. Don’t know if that first batch was it, or if they want to do their whole catalog.

  191. From what I can gather, Duran Duran & their management are looking at celebrating their 40th anniversary. I would hope to see some gigs, maybe a residency at the Hammersmith Odeon or Royal Albert Hall (they’ve never headlined there ) a coffee table book, definitely a proper box set release of the Wedding album & at least an EP of new songs in a collectible format for the fans. A new album is too much to ask for. Curiously, Nick Rhodes has recently said that the anniversary will be 2019 but I don’t understand that as everyone knows the year of formation was 1978 ( their website even sells 1978 T-shirts ). On other matters, I can’t wait for the Simple Minds reissues of “Street fighting years” & U2’s “Pop”.

  192. The Small Faces’ The Autumn Stone is slated for March and the 3 disc set will feature the correct mixes where previously the wrong ones had been used. It’ll also feature a newly discovered instrumental entitled ‘Olympic Jam’. Two months later there’ll be a triple vinyl 50th anniversary edition of ‘Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake’ featuring the mono and stereo versions plus some alternate mixes.

    1. …..but Small Faces compiler Rob Caiger’s unwillingness to reveal a tracklisting for either of his proposed Small Faces projects, suggests that the tracklistings haven’t been finalised and these projects have not been taken to the mastering stage. You’ll be waiting a long time, if these projects materialise at all. The “Here Comes the Nice” 4-CD + Book set issued some years back used all or nearly all of the surviving Small Faces multitrack tapes. and the group never had much unreleased songs to begin with. Remember, the group only recorded 4 albums, and one of them was (at best) a contractual obligation.

    1. I can’t see Aerial getting another release at all due to the inclusion of a now-disgraced figure… It’s a real shame because a vinyl reissue is right up there at the top of my ‘wish list’.   198. Please not a “Suede” 25th anniversary edition! Since the band reformed in 2010 it’s been an endless reissue of the back catalogue, with two new records very poorly promoted in comparison with their older stuff rehashings.

    I would rather see a 20th anniversary edition of Placebo’s “Without You I’m Nothing”. They could just use the remaster from a couple years ago, which was exclusive to vinyl, and add a second disc of extras and a DVD. I’m not that confident though, Placebo don’t seem to be very fond of their past records.

Maybe slightly off SDE’s usual path but The Residents have finally unlocked their tape archive and kick off a “pREServed” series of 2CD upgrades at the end of next week with a pile of unherard stuff being added to their first two albums. Cherry Red already promising this will continue during 2018.

    The Fall’s “Bend Sinister” has been (semi)promised by Beggars Arkive for this year – this is the only 80’s Fall album that hasn’t been remastered and reissued in any form.

    A complete CD/DVD collection of Siouxsie And The Banshees singles was being mooted by Steve Severin for a 2017 release but never appeared – 2018, hopefully?

  201. He passed away in February last year and 2018 is the fiftieth anniversary of legendary producer and arranger David Axelrod’s debut album ‘Song of Innocence’. I would love it if that album and it’s follow up ‘Songs of Experience’ along with 1970’s ‘Earth Rot’ were cleaned up and boxed up along with an instrumental version of ‘Earth Rot’. Anyone new to his music should give him a spin. With Earl Palmer on drums and Carol Kaye on bass, ‘Song of Innocence’ is the greatest album you’ve never heard!

  202. Any ideas on what will happen with the Prince catalogue? I really enjoyed the Purple Rain SDE and hope that they’ll continue with other albums in a similar format. I have the Lovesexy tour on video, but nothing to watch it on! It’d be great if there was a DVD transfer of that.

  203. I completely agree that when you release an 80’s album, you must include the 80’s period remixes. Like Fleetwood did with Tango In The Night. Bruce Springsteen, please take note if you ever do decide to reissue “Born In The USA”. And David Bowie reissuers, please take note that we do want all the extended vocal, dub and instrumental remixes!!

    I’m hoping for another Prince reissue this year. They moved fast with Purple Rain and I’m hoping for a massive SDE of “Sign Of The Times”, Prince’s best album ever in my book.

    A Scritti Politti reissue would be amazing, especially “Cupid and Psycho” and “Provision” are outstanding albums, very worthy of SDE’s. Hopefully Mojo is right.

    I would personally love to see a reissue of Nik Kershaw’s “Radio Musicola” and of course any reissue of The Beloved would be much appreciated by many.

    No one is ever talking about Stevie Wonder reissues. I would love to see “Songs In The Key Of Life” reissued. Not sure what Stevie had in his vaults but I can imagine it is a lot. I can’t even imagine how many songs he wrote. There must be stuff there. If anything else fails, there should be demo’s and live stuff at least.

    I’m NOT looking forward to any more money grabbing Roxy Music, Eagles and Paul McCartney stuff. Their reissue-models seem to have failed. Not sure about sales figures but I hope they abandon the path they are on and have not inspired any other artists.

    Bring on the new 2018 box sets!!!

    2. Totally agree about Stevie Wonder. I would love expanded versions of any of his classic period. Cecil and Margouleff have said that they recorded hours and hours of stuff when they produced him. There are some unreleased songs floating about on YouTube but something official would be amazing.

    1. I agree. 2017 was a big year for expensive boxes (Beatles, Blancmange, Erasure, Fleetwood Mac, Human League, Kraftwerk, and Marillion were among my purchases). From what I’ve seen my wallet will be less stretched this year but it will give me time to find new artists to collect or maybe an upgrade to my system.

  227. I would really enjoy a two-disc deluxe “Back To The Egg,” more than his other more fondly loved releases. He has a ton of demos from that time period. Plus a really good quality recording of the 1979 Glasgow concert before they left for Japan (where they played most of the songs from “Egg,” oddly enough!) is out there on bootleg. Throw on the promotional videos they did for Back to the Egg TV special (you can find them on YouTube) and that would be a good 2 or 3 CD, 1 DVD release!

    Paul seems to have a soft spot for his underappreciated-in-their-time releases, so maybe someday… I’d buy it, Paul!

  234. My interest is in the Eurythmics. Yes the vinyl reissues may excite some but many fans would long for a boxset and a miraculous reissue of the 1984 Big Brother soundtrack. I still think there’s enough stuff in the vaults like 7″ edits, remixes to warrant another reissue.

    1. The Eurythmics need to build momentum for a second stab at the HoF in the future. It’s based on public votes so to get in would need increased exposure. Would love to see a true 2-disc comprehensive singles collection with real single versions (not like the Collins singles collection of albums versions) followed by reissues of the albums in deluxe editions with all b-sides, edits, extended versions, alternative mixes, recorded live versions, and a video disc (I’ll take DVD over nothing) of the promotional videos and live footage/concerts. The 1984 album is overdue for reissue with single edits, any alternative mixes and the music from the film which finally saw daylight last year on blu-ray though in mono only. One can dream “Sweet Dreams.”

      1. They should forget about HOF (who cares?) and put energies/efforts into their own back catalogue. That’s a better way to preserve their legacy.

        1. I don’t understand anyone lobbying to get into it because who’s in and who isn’t is so arbitrary. Plus it’s (understandably) US-centric. Like you say… who cares?

Just looking at the b-sides and remixes listed with the singles on Wikipedia (which is incomplete, and of course doesn’t list anything “in the vaults”), there’s is enough material to easily fill a packed 2CD set, and that’s if you leave out all the tracks that were used as bonus material on the previous reissues. There was, of course, some really odd experimental stuff that was left out that likely only the diehards (like me) are clamoring for, but there are also some great songs like “Rich Girl” (NOT a cover of the Hall & Oates song), and of course all those great extended mixes they really skimped on with the reissue series. They could also stand to reissue the 2-disc live compilation, though recordings of full-fledged concerts would be really nice.

  238. Steven Wilson posted last week that there will be deluxe edition of the 2 Porcupine Tree albums coming out on vinyl next month(forgotten their names).
    Jethro Tull/IA have said there will be 50th anniversary releases besides the Heavy Horses box.A “big,expensive” set(to quote someone in the organisation) is rumoured to be part of this ,possibly a career spanning live box.Soundboard tapes from 71-74 are apparently being worked on as part of this.
    Further releases in the Neil Young Archives series are expected once the web site moves to a subscription basis.Physical release like Hitchhiker should be part of this.
    13 Springsteen live shows as part of their live archive series.A 93 Meadowlands show with the “other band” came out last week to kick the year off.
    In the more wish than think category Steve Winwood put up a 50th anniversary Traffic video at the end of last year.Could it be that he might finally give permission for Island to release the huge ,comprehensive Traffic box they have compiled.
    Jimmy Page has said he is working on some unreleased Zep stuff to put out this year although gave no details about what this means.

  241. Re Bowie – Has Tin machine II ever been reissued? I have the original CD issue of it (and Tin Machine I as a Japanese mini LP CD) but never seen it reissued and seems quite expensive nowadays. No idea why people are down on Tin Machine, I like both those labums a lot and would love to see them remastered and included in a Bowie box.

  242. I would love to see a box set of all the Pat Benatar Chrysalis Records. As far as I know there are no deluxe reissues of any of her material. She was huge in the States during the late 70’s early 80’s so I would have thought there would be a market for it.     1. Many years ago, EMI(who then owned Chrysalis) stated that the only remaining unreleased Blondie recordings from the Chrysalis years are a few unfinished Giorgio Moroder-produced tracks. all other Blondie Chrysalis vault tracks have been released.

    3. I would love to see a Police album get the deluxe treatment. It’s been a constant source of frustration that I’ve never heard any demos for any police songs, except for some early versions that was on strontium 90. I think I read somewhere that there really aren’t any demos floating around, and that there aren’t a lot of outtakes either. If anybody knows differently I’d love to know.

        1. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. Sound quality is not so great and sounds like they use a drum machine. But I appreciate knowing about these.

          I would love to hear some outtakes where we actually hear the entire band riffing and jamming. And working out how songs should be put together. I’m not a sting fan, but I’m a huge police fan. That’s why I think the entire band’s outtakes would be a blast.

          And if these demos did make it to a box set, hopefully the quality would be a little bit improved. Thanks again

  253. From a fan’s point of view, I’d like to speculate that there almost certainly won’t be a deluxe edition of Clapton’s ‘Backless’ this year. All of the “safe” and bankable hits were on the previous year’s ‘Slowhand’. ‘Backless’ is often considered the poor relation, even though I personally love it (it’s been one of my go-to EC discs for the past couple of years.

    Any chance of a deluxe reissue is also very much hampered by Eric’s general state throughout ’78. He was at the peak of an alcohol habit that (supposedly) consumed two bottles of brandy a day and his performances suffered. Although there is live material in circulation from the ’78 tour (of varying quality) and a documentary film was also shot (then shelved indefinitely – having now seen it, it’s painfully obvious why), it’s unlikely we’ll see/hear any of it officially.

    2. Actually, not that it’s likely, but I’d like to see a reissue of the complete ‘Eric Clapton Rainbow Concert’, bringing together all of the available performances from both the afternoon and evening shows. There was a 4CD Japanese bootleg of this, but that’s impossible to find now.

      The currently available expanded CD is a mess. It doesn’t even include all six performances from the original LP/cassette!

    1. “Made in Europe” and other 1968-76 Deep Purple product is in limbo due to the receivership of “Deep Purple Overseas Ltd.” and a legal action from Ian Gillan, Ian Paice, Roger Glover and The Estate of Jon Lord (seeking to stop the sale of the company into non-Purple hands)
