‘Concert For George’ is the next release in the SDE Surround Series

The Dolby Atmos Mix of this legendary concert on SDE-exclusive blu-ray

(quick pre-order link)

On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the 2002 concert, fans now have the opportunity to re-experience Concert For George in immersive Dolby Atmos Audio, via an SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio

On 29 November 2002, one year after his passing, Olivia Harrison and Eric Clapton organised a performance tribute to celebrate the life and music of George Harrison. Held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, the momentous evening featured George’s songs, and music he loved, performed by artists including Eric Clapton, Joe Brown, Dhani Harrison, Jools Holland, Jeff Lynne, Paul McCartney, Monty Python, Tom Petty, Billy Preston, Ravi & Anoushka Shankar, Ringo Starr and more.

Concert For George captures stunning renditions of some of the most significant music of the 20th century, including ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps‘ (featuring Clapton on guitar, McCartney on piano and Starr on drums), ‘Taxman‘ (performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) and ‘The Inner Light‘ (covered by Jeff Lynne and Anoushka Shankar). Lynne, Harrison’s longtime friend and collaborator, produced the audio elements of the concert, while Clapton oversaw the entire proceedings as Musical Director.

In collaboration with Craft Recordings, SDE is proud to exclusively offer the brand new Dolby Atmos Mix of Concert For George on limited edition blu-ray audio.

Furthermore, the SDE-exclusive blu-ray will feature all the audio – the complete sound recordings from Concert For George – and therefore includes the beautiful Indian music performed/conducted early in the evening by Anoushka Shankar, the Monty Python numbers and Sam Brown’s supreme rendition of Horse To The Water (with Jools Holland). The complete sound recordings have never been issued on CD and were only previously released as an audio product via the 4LP vinyl set (issued in 2018 and now re-available). With the physical blu-ray audio you can make yourself comfortable, sit back, and enjoy all two hours of the full 27-track configuration without flipping sides or changing records.

The Dolby Atmos Mix of Concert For George has been created by GRAMMY-winning engineer Paul Hicks, whose many credits include the 2009 Beatles remasters, the remixes for the 50th anniversary of George Harrison’s 1970 album All Things Must Pass and the spatial and stereo audio mixes for the albums issued as part of the ongoing John Lennon reissue campaign (Imagine, Gimme Some Truth and Plastic Ono Band).

I thought we could go a little more daring with this Blu-ray Audio

Mix engineer Paul Hicks, 2022

With regards to this Concert For George Atmos Mix, Paul Hicks explained to SDE how he took a two-pronged approach to the spatial audio mix, treating the theatrical version and the blu-ray audio version differently, with the later more immersive and a lot bolder than the original 5.1 mix (the one on the previous DVD/blu-ray video releases).

He told us: “With the fact that Apple and [others] have embraced spatial technology, I feel that people are ready to go a bit bolder in it now. When we did the theatrical [Dolby Atmos mix], you know, that’s meant for screenings, so was a little bit more traditional. But with how people are listening to Atmos today, I thought we could go a little bit more daring with this [Blu-ray Audio]… the format is [typically] where you’re looking at the band, but for this Blu-ray you’re standing where the singers are—so it’s nice and immersive.

Having it on Blu-ray you get the advantage of the full-quality Atmos. It’s a chance to hear [the concert] full-quality in all its glory”. Paul Hicks, 2022

Concert For George 20th Anniversary one-night-only global theatrical event 29 November 2022 – Book Tickets

The Concert For George limited edition blu-ray audio is the only way to enjoy the new Atmos Mix via a physical product, and the disc also features a 48/24 stereo mix of the complete sound recordings (the highest resolution available). Please note, for the avoidance of any doubt, this blu-ray does not include any video, it’s an audio-only product – a live album – that contains the remastered sound recordings of Concert For George newly mixed in Dolby Atmos, and in stereo.

Here’s the now traditional reminder as to why this product is highly recommended:

  • It’s the only way to enjoy the Dolby Atmos mix of the album via a physical product
  • You don’t need to sign-up to a streaming service such as Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mix
  • The Atmos Mix on the blu-ray is not compressed due to streaming bandwidth restrictions
  • You own the product, you are not renting it from a digital service provider
  • The blu-ray audio is an excellent format for music and you don’t want to see it die off
  • Supporting SDE with these initiatives leads to similar collaborations with labels/artists and we are keen to bring your more in the near future

The Concert For George blu-ray audio will be available to pre-order for two weeks only. The pre-order window is now open and will close in early December 2022. Secure your pre-order in at the earliest opportunity, to avoid any disappointment (#6 in the series, Orbital’s Optical Delusion, sold out earlier this month). The release date for this special edition of Concert For George is 24 February 2023, a day before what would have been George’s 80th birthday. Your copy will ship a few days before that date.

The blu-ray audio is available exclusively via the SDE shop: To pre-order it, you can either visit the SDE shop directly, using this link, or place your SDE shop order from this page using the special Concert for George button, below. We ship worldwide and use tracked postage for a speedy and reliable service (we have kept international shipping prices as low as possible).

This special release in the ongoing SDE Surround Series will not be shipping with an SDE slipcase (and is #6.5 in the series).

TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio contains no video. It requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.
EU SHIPPING NOTES: If you are ordering from the EU please be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK. The prices the SDE shop charge you do not include VAT

  1. Hugely disappointed in the Atmos mix downconverted to TrueHD as it is extremely (bizarrely) low volume and very thin on an OPPO 205 and Sony 800M. The 2 channel is a bit louder. The Ten Years After “A Space In Time” disc does not have this problem at all and is excellent. For me, this is a well intentioned, but red herring release lauding the benefits of Atmos. I have one other Atmos disc that is also terrible and barely audible at high volume, the Zappa Waka/Wazoo blu ray. Reading through many threads on Atmos soundtracks on blu rays movies, this seems to be an all too common malady. I hope the upcoming Dylan release is in the same camp as the Ten Years After release. Fingers crossed..

        1. Thanks for the response, Paul. I am probably using the wrong technical terms when agreeing with the previous comment. I believe the correct term is ‘fold down’, not ‘down mix’. I do not currently own a Dolby Atmos capable system and was concerned the disc would not work well with my system, but the description on this page stated “the Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.”. I thought the disc would still sound great on my system. I have never experienced this significant volume difference between a surround sound and stereo mixes on the same disc. I own many discs where the default surround sound mix is Dolby Atmos and I’ve never had an issue like this. If you are saying this is normal, then I will have to take your word for it. Thanks again.

          1. I am perplexed by this feedback. Why does it matter if it’s quiet if you can turn it up? Audiophiles and serious music fans have been complaining for decades of music being too loud and now it’s too quiet. Seriously, why is this an issue? Just crank it up. Dolby have standards and requirements that mean Atmos Mixes need to be mastered quieter. That’s why they are always quieter than the equivalent 5.1 mix and the stereo. I have had this exact same conversation with Steven Wilson and he confirmed it.

        2. Respectfully… Atmos Mixes are always quiet? Not on my system. They are generally dynamic and louder. The deafening “All Things Must Pass” is the first and foremost example as are “Abbey Road”, “Let It Be”, “Gimme Some Truth” and the excellent and most recent “A Space In Time” which are all encoded properly with excellent fidelity and volume. This release is a huge disappointment on the Atmos front. The stereo PCM is very good. Someone dropped the ball somewhere down the mastering/encoding chain. The promotional blurbs by Paul Hicks are nowhere in evidence with the final result as released here.

          1. It is literally in Dolby’s mastering requirements that Atmos Mixes be much quieter (-18db I think it is) than standard stereo mastering. This is why you always have to turn the volume knob down when switching from Atmos to stereo, especially if the stereo mix is loud in the first place (which they often are).

          2. That does not explain the profound difference in volume between “Concert For George” and “A Space In Time”. Can you possibly explain this discrepancy between the two? The latter is excellent with plenty of volume. Perhaps Atmos on blu ray is simply too inconsistent/glitchy to be marketed to consumers at this point. No one should have to push their amps so hard to get a listenable/reasonable volume… yet again, only on certain discs. The Beatles releases with Atmos do not have this problem, nor “All Things Must Pass”. Of course, no one is pointing the finger at you personally, but it is a problem when people are paying for something and such a problem exists. All the best!!

          3. Different engineers probably. Maybe some are aware of the rules and some aren’t. Who knows? We have to agree to disagree – it is not a ‘problem’. It’s just how the mix was mastered. I have thousands of CDs that will all be mastered and different volume levels. Who should I complain to?

          4. We are all aware of issues with brickwalling/mastering issues in the digital domain. I have over 3,000 discs, CD’s, 150 SACD, Blu-Ray and DVD-Audio discs. This issue is present on my system on 2 discs. “Concert For George” and “Waka/Wazoo”. But, according to you, it is not a “problem” (even if it sounds more like AM radio from the 60’s than a highly tauted groundbreaking home audio format). Like Paul Simon once said “A man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest”. Agree to disagree indeed. Lesson learned.

          5. CDs, SACDs etc. are not relevant. How many blu-rays do you own that have Dolby Atmos mixes on them? To be clear, Dolby state that Atmos Mixes should be mastered at -18db which is quiet. That is why Dolby Atmos Mixes should be quiet because the company that invented Atmos have said that is how they should be mastered. There really is no point continuing this discussion. It’s quiet because that’s how it is supposed to be. I will cancel your Bob Dylan so we don’t have the same problem again. Thanks, Paul

  2. What a release to be able to own. I was able to go to the Royal Albert Hall on that beautiful night. Every second of music was meaningful and amazing to witness. I am thrilled that this is coming out in such amazing quality and the entire performance is complete. Every artist was there for George and it showed.
Now if only you can convince KATE BUSH to release her live shows as an Atmos mix with video, or just a normal blu-ray, then all will be right in the world.

Thanks Paul, for this and all the work you do so we can get the releases with proper reviews good or bad. The industry needs to know what works and doesn’t (Revolver with no surround or blu-ray).

  3. Quite a feather in your cap to get this. Beatles and solo are very careful who they choose to partner with ! Please have a look at the constant need to dismiss the tracking page every time I try to access your site. The list of partners you use to track us is unbelievably long.

  4. Not saying that the previous titles were bad Paul but this 6.5 ? Has a bit more panache so to say. Well done….
I disagree with some comments about this being the best, others are good and I’m sure you’ll sell a decent number of discs.
I still think the canceled/postponed Best of Inxs would’ve sold more then this offering.

    What’s up with a 6.5 anyways ???

  5. Congratulations Paul!

I own all but one of the SDE series, but will be skipping this one too. When the prior Concert for George boxed set came out in 2019, I thought hard about it and decided it would be something I would maybe play once. I’ve never been a fan of recorded live performances and rarely buy them except for my favourite bands. I think live performances are much in person than watched on TV listened to on one’s system. And while I have all the Beatles albums and only stalled at Revolver with the anniversary boxed sets, I just can’t get excited about this. I’ll let another have the opportunity to have the disc I would have purchased though I will kick myself if the 6.5 results in a companion disc 7.0 that I do want. But I’ll take that risk.

Again, congrats and I look forward to SDE 07.

  6. Thanks Paul from here in New Zealand. Appreciate your work in getting this release.

Love this release: got the dvd, then recent cd/bluray and vinyl !
And give it a spin every few months.
Doh, just realised I missed on the Orbital SDE forgot to order. Oh well, thems the ‘funny breaks’…

  7. OK, so… I discovered the Beatles and then the next week they broke up! So i’ve been a huge fan (group and solo – and that included watching the JPM tv special the first time round, and still wasn’t put off) ever since. However, for some reason (well, a natural aversion to tribute shows and live albums) made me swerve this. I’ve just watched WMGGW and found it strangely moving. High time I bought it – especially in Atmos as i’ve managed to get my system wired up properly and blu-ray audio sounds absolutely brilliant – luckily all my neighbours are deaf. Sold.

  8. Ordered. Congratulations on being able to achieve this. Seems like something that would be impossible in terms of licencing etc.

Will the reason for the odd numbering be revealed at some point? Intriguing.

Perhaps a cheeky question, but if it is possible to produce this is there any reason that a Revolver hi-res/surround disc could not be investigated. Obviously almost everyone realises that this was a massive mistake by Apple.

They would have to be very thick-skinned to not be aware of this. But we also have multiple issues with the Get Back releases.

On a positive note, really pleased to see this release appear, so take a bow.

  9. Ordered, Paul ! Very nice release ! Still on to number #7 in the series. I don’t know the reason why, but it is bit of a pity that there is no slipcase available for this one, but there will be a good reason for this. I still did not want to miss this in my complete series.

  10. I’ve seen a few comments about the CCR box set in this thread. I ordered it too and noticed it’s reduced on the US Craft Recordings site so I chased it up (must admit I’d forgotten all about it). This is the (very speedy) reply that I got:
“These are being prepared to ship this week (listed with a Nov. 18th release date, apologies we are a few days behind). The discount you are seeing is reflected on our US store.”
So basically it’s on its way (hopefully) but no reduced price unless you’re in the US (grrrrr).

By the way, nice scoop on the Concert for George (will be buying!)

  11. No hesitation… My 2nd in this series. Thanks Paul & friends for all your hard work! Really inspiring to see what you do with your website. Looking forward to next year! Thanks :-)

  12. “Sit On My Face” in Atmos? How could I not purchase?

    Ordered!

Thanks for this great series Paul. 7 releases (oops….I mean 6.5!) in one year, fantastic. Can’t wait to see what 2023 brings!

    1. Sit On My Face and The Lumberjack Song were also missing from the CD. All three were on the vinyl release. Something had to give due to the space available on the the CD (the running time on the second CD is 79 minutes).

      1. First cd is only 38 minutes. 38 + 79 minutes is 117 minutes. That’s about two 60 minutes long cd’s. There was lot of space to include those three tracks. I think it was only marketin gimmick to sell vinyl!

    1. Craft Recordings UK distribution centre went into receivership. I got standard email responses from them about how the US side of the business was still operating and they hoped to sort out issues ASAP. I did eventually get my Charlie Brown Christmas LP which was strangely dispatched from Germany!

  13. Wow, that’s quite the ‘get’! The talent involved is impressive enough in itself, before anyone even hears it! Congratulations on these releases becoming increasingly high profile. That really speaks to the quality of the releases, and the artists’ satisfaction with them, if they’re attracting such major talent.

I feel guilty for admitting that they’re pricey enough that I’ve sworn to only buy the ones that I have a major interest in, but looks like the one to make me cave in and buy.

  14. What sound experience will I get if I play this on my increasingly elderly Sony BDV-N5200W 5.1 audio system? It is from before anyone had heard of Atmos, I think. Will I get just stereo, or what? Thanks.

    1. The last SDE release/Eno blu on my non-Atmos average setup plays like a dream, thanks to Paul/SDE I’ve now dug out a load of old 5.1 dvd releases and am really appreciating them now too.

  15. Congratulations for securing such a high profile deal.
I already owned the CD+bluray version of this show, and even if this is a whole new version with highly enhanced mix and audio quality, I never really got into this concert. So my own taste give it a pass, but I am very proud that the community you built, Paul, is regarded as important enough to have that kind of releases happen.

  16. Instant order!.
Paul- congratulations for getting this high profile release on the SDE label. It will boost the profile of your surround series and hopefully allow you access to some bigger names in the future.

  17. Excellent Paul. This event was absolutely extraordinary, and it will be great to have the Atmos mix (ordered). Perhaps you could negotiate a little side deal (with Giles Martin or Apple or whoever) for an exclusive SDE blu-ray of the Revolver Atmos mix. Well, if you’ve gotta dream you might as well dream in colour, right? Cheers…

  18. It never really occurred to me until now that you can do these very special mixes of live shows aswell as just the studio recordings. If the sound quality of a live recording can really be improved like this I am sure there must be many major acts who would want at least one of their classic shows cleaned up and remixed for a superior sound like this?

  19. Congratulations Paul! This really is S.D.E. hits the BIG TIME!

I’m left wondering the follow up to 6.5 is going to be along with a slip case to hold two Blurays. It’s got to be George Harrison related and I figure TCFBD related, a remastered 4K video? OK, you’re not allowed to say but it’s obviously something (geddit) special.

If you’ve managed the impossible persuading Olivia and Dhani to allow you to release this surely you can persuade Macca, Ringo, Olivia and Dhani (again), Sean and Yoko and those dumb-heads at Apple to release ‘Revolver’ in Dolby Atmos.

There’s no point in putting on the brakes now, it’s full steam ahead.

Congratulations and good luck on the journey ahead for yourself and all at S.D.E.

  20. Can i ask a question about “While my guitar gentle weeps”? From memory when watching the show on telly i could have sworn Paul fluffed a note on the intro piano bit which is not shown on this video – Am i right and its been fixed? Nothing sinister in the question as i dearly love Macca but just curiosity has got the best of me

    1. It’s quite common that stuff gets cleaned up. The original TV broadcast of Pink Floyd’s PULSE also had a major flub on “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” that has been fixed for all later versions of the video.

  21. Phenomenal. Thank you and congratulations!

Would love to see Atmos/spatial mixes for The Beach Boys’ Feel Flows and Sail On Sailor sets presented in this way, rather than have them condemned to the iNfinite purgatory of Apple Music… a boy can hope, aye?

  22. As a Beatles fan this is a really exciting release. I’m a bit of a newbie when it comes to the equipment needed to get the best out of a release like this. What would the collective mind of SDE recommend as a reasonably (under £500?) set up to play this?

    1. Couple of options: Either a budget AV receiver that can do 5.1/7.1/Atmos and a budget speaker system to match, or possibly an Atmos soundbar (budget ones can do 3.1.2).

Given your budget, it might be better to go for a system than can do 5.1 (AV receiver & speakers) or 3.1.2 (soundbar) now that will allow you to expand later with additional speakers (AVR route) or add rear speakers, with or without height channels (soundbar) if and when your budget allows.

Taking a quick look on Richer Sounds site, the Samsung HW-Q600B Is a 3.1.2 soundbar (3 = front left, centre & right channels, .1 = subwoofer and .2 = 2 front height channels). No idea as to quality/performance or whether the system is expandable, but on paper you should get the front soundstage with Atmos height channels.

If you have your BluRay player hooked up directly to your TV, if your TV has an ARC/eARC (audio return channel) enabled HDMI, connect the soundbar to this and your TV should output the audio data stream to the soundbar for decoding.

Always audition anything you might find of interest though to be sure it does what you want it to do, and a knowledgable dealer (not that massive chain beginning with a C that sells TVs, fridges & computers) should help see you right.

        1. Thanks Iain for asking the question and Bren for the information. Like you Iain this release has made me think about getting some new equipment, but I have no idea about what is needed and what to buy.

  23. Hi Paul congrats on securing another album to the series. Can I just ask, as alluded to in the Paul Hicks quote – is this a brand new Dolby Atmos mix exclusive to the SDE blu ray? There’s some Atmos releases (lossy of course) that just hit the streaming sites but I’m wondering if they’re the theatrical Atmos mix released for cinemas?

    1. What Paul was saying is that the mix on this Atmos Mix on the blu-ray is more immersive than the Atmos Mix he created for the theatrical presentation. However the version on streaming will likely be the same mix as on the blu-ray.

  24. It can’t get any better than this ! This is fantastic… Even without appropriate equipment, I’ll certainly buy it, it’s the Beatles !! Congratulations, and I hope that someday you’ll be able to reissue an underrated album like “Living in the material World”. But that’s another story. The archivist in me wants to believe that the 6.5 number is a promise of something great !!

  25. This is a great addition. The concert has featured a number of times on Sky Arts in the UK, and is truly excellent. Been on my wish list to buy the video for quite a while now, so to be able to have (own) it in this format too is an absolute joy!
Can I suggest you package them in a double disc case, so I can eventually slot a video in and make my own super deluxe edition?

  26. Wow I was not going to buyt this until I read what Hicks said about this being more immersive. GREAT NEWS. Thanks again Paul. I am just getting my new setup finished in new house. I appreciate your work. God bless.

  27. Very exciting! Curious about the numbering and hopeful a slipcase may come later? Not gonna lie I’m excited for orbital but not too far behind is looking forward to the propaganda slipcase to make it all look classy together.

Ya got me hooked hoping for some more ztt to come!

  28. Nice one Paul. It’s a beautiful concert and every time I watch it I well up on the last song by Joe Brown. How about Supertramp next if they’ll let you near their tapes. Their output is seriously lacking. Would love Crisis and Quietest in surround as a double header!

  29. I had my break in Hyde Park, got the e-mail and pushed immediately the button to buy the disc.
But Craft recordings? I ordered the CCR-Royal Albert Boxset .I paid – I havent received the boxset. And If I click the click the order link - My order isnt visible!

  30. your dedication to this format is admirable – got the complete set so far and will continue to add upon each new release – Please lets see in the future some classics from other perhaps not in the now spotlight bands – Manfred Manns Earth Band, Golden Earring, Supertramp, Mike and the Mechanics, Dire Straits and Pendragon. BTW on a different note I am sure we all NEED Abba done as well – first choice must be The Visitors!!!

    1. Supertramp would be great if the band members could be convinced to sign off on anything, but unfortunately, they’re all at loggerheads with each other.

Manfred Mann’s Earth Band would be cool (and no big label to negotiate with), but unfortunately, all the multitracks of the classic albums were lost in the Workhouse fire in the 1980s, so the only material possibly available for surround mixes is from the late 80s onward. Speaking of which, there’s been talk of a new album being worked on for a few years now but so far it hasn’t surfaced…

  31. Congratulations Paul. I would imagine that landing an exclusive like this can’t have been easy – so much kudos for the effort. Definitely a cause for celebration. NB – I am also intrigued by the weird numbering – 6.5!?

  32. Well – I never thought physical media could bring a lump to my throat. Musically George was my main man – I was so lucky to attend the actual concert in 2002 a concert I now know will be at the top of my bucket list – a bucket list I never wanted to happen as George passed far too prematurely and whilst I’ve been hoping for a Seal, Frankie, Terence Trent Derby or Shakespeare’s Sister Sacred Heart – this has literally floored me and brought a lumpy to my throat. Thank you so much Paul, Craft Recordings, Dhani and Olivia…. Christmas has come early.

    1. Given Paul Hicks’ comments on the audio only Atmos mix, previous releases will have put you back in the room. This will put you on the stage. And always good to read how much music can matter to people.

  33. Wow! What a coup! Instant order! This is an absolutely fantastic turn of events that you must surely be proud of, Paul. Not to take anything away from the other releases, or the artists involved, but… it’s a bloody BEATLE!!! Fitting testament to your tenacity and proof of the clout you clearly have in the spatial audio arena. Long may it continue. Well done :)

  34. What a fabulous release and congrats on the exclusivity! This could oh so easily have been the centrepiece of a 3 figure box set and I’d have happily bought such an edition. The segue from acoustic uke to full electric band in Paul’s rendition of Something made the hair stand up on my arms the first time I heard/saw the concert and it continues to do so now. Hearing everything mixed to Atmos by no less an authority than Paul Hicks and for a frankly giveaway price? I’m already driving the getaway car.

Seriously, thanks for whatever work and patience you’ve had to put into landing this Paul. Cannot wait to put the disc in my player, get the coffee on and lose myself in George’s music in 5.1.2 for an afternoon.
