Elvis Presley / The Album Collection career-spanning 60CD box set

elvis_complete

In March this year, Sony Music’s catalog division, Legacy Recordings will release The Album Collection, a limited edition 60CD Elvis Presley box set commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the release of Elvis Presley, The King’s first album for RCA…

This set is similar, but more lavish, than the acclaimed Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash boxes issued in the last few years and comprises 57 Elvis albums originally released on RCA from 1956-1977 as well as three new discs of rarities from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s respectively.

Of course, many of Elvis’s long-players have been expanded and repackaged for Legacy Editions, themed box sets and the like over the years, but his 57 original LPs – studio and live albums, compilations of non-album singles, film soundtracks, and even budget albums with hard-to-find material – have been reissued only sparingly during the digital era. The Album Collection presents – for the first time, in many cases – Elvis’s official, original albums as they were first released.

Legacy Recordings have promised fans that original album packaging has been “meticulously restored” for each of the discs included in with details including gatefold/die cut sleeves, original RCA Victor inserts and stickers, CD labels replicating original ‘side 1’ labels and more.

This collector’s box also includes a 300-page fully illustrated hard cover book featuring a commentary penned by Elvis Presley scholar John Jackson, discographies and recording session details (dates, locations, personnel, etc.) and more.

In addition to the 57 albums, this box set features three bonus CDs of rare tracks – new compilations, with each volume devoted to one of the decades; the 1950s, the 1960s and the 1970s.

Elvis Presley – The Album Collection 60CD box set is released on 18 March 2016.

Would be nice if they just once would include Elvis In Concert in one of these box sets. Maybe even make a special version without all the interview snippets. Some of which are quite annoying.

[…] Two weeks ahead of its release, here’s an unboxing video that will give you a feel for the contents and presentation of the 60CD Elvis Presley Album Collection box set. Elvis Presley – The Album Collection 60CD box set is released on 18 March 2016. There is a FULL track listing here. […]

I’ll be getting this partly because I want replicas of the LPs which my dad owned and which I played to death when I was 9. But also because I find the albums far more easily digestible than any of the “masters” sets.

But what I really want to see is ‘Elvis – The UK Albums’ with HMV and RCA replicated labels and UK tracklistings. There must be over a thousand Elvis CDs and the first UK album Rock’n’Roll is still not replicated on CD.

Am considering buying it now Amazon have reduced their price .. but are the cds newly remastered .. no-ones mentioned this yet . .any news please? Cheers ..

According to the Elvis information network
Elvis Presley: The Album Collection” 60CD Box Set, More Details:
Good news is that the these are all NEW Re-Masters from the original tapes, re-done by Vic Anesini using the most up-to-date technology.

They were supposedly 2015/16 remastered again by Vic Anesini in the past year as he wanted to improve on what he did in 2005-06 for the 30 CD overpriced box set from Sony.

David Burrows

thank you .. that’s great news

Allen Wynn

Regardless of what some of the Elvis websites are reporting, there has been no official confirmation by SONY that the tracks on this new set have been remastered again. And concerning the 3 “Rarities” bonus discs… Have they actually been remastered? The three bonus discs that came with the Complete Masters set from a few years ago were not remastered.

Mychael

The set is now available from JPC for 200 euros.

Who’s this Elvis person?

ROB from Oz

Elvis fans – boycott this release please.

This kind of marketing is really old and by doing so, you will deliver a powerful message to SONY, that when it comes to Elvis catalogue they’re behind the times. Just look at what was achieved recently with the Beatles online deal with Spotify. I ask why can’t a similar downloading legally deal be set up on Elvis music and outakes ? Elvis fans should be given a variety of options.

Regards,
ROB

Don’t know anything about that site or the guy selling the set. I was googling the set to see the details (wasn’t aware of its existence previously) and that one popped up in my search. I thought about buying the set for about 10 seconds but chalked it up to “too good to be true”, although the seller had a good rating. I report, you decide.

Michael Gershbein

Though looking at it closer, the fact that the guy has 97 of them in stock (and only 2 reviews) does make me a TEENY bit more suspicious.

johnny

Sorry, Guys, I was just trying to get your attention…I didn’t mean anything horrible
Best wishes : )

Ken

Johnny
Is it okay to link to Amazon then who have loads of bootlegs for sale on their website?

johnny

Re: January 7, 2016 at 17:47

Shame on you, Paul, for approving links to bootlegs…

Matt Reid

Here’s what I see of value:

-C’Mon Everybody is the 1st official release on cd as far as I know
-Camden albums with bonus tracks
-Original sleeve/label artwork.

Worth it for that—Not for me—yet

Tim

Nothing ‘unreleased’ or even that rare on the rarities discs…missed opportunity and makes the set less desirable…imo.

BRENEZ Alain

Ordered from Bol.com at €129. We will see if they honour that price or not. Doesn’t cost anything to try. Actually I think €129 should be the correct price for albums released between 40 and 60 years ago !!!

johnny

Less than £100 from bol.com
http://www.bol.com/nl/p/the-rca-albums-collection/9200000054116356/

No doubt some people will still be bellyaching that it’s too much : )

Sami

What was the price over at jpc.de? was it 139€ or 129€?
I saw it once it was alive (can’t remember exact price) but was wondering still.

I have The Complete Masters-boxset so Im most likely going to pass this new release unless it comes around with really cheap price.

Carlton Fisher

I find this strangely compelling. I’m not even much of an Elvis fan, but there’s something about the sheer volume of it that appeals to the completist in me. I might wind up getting it if it drops in price a bit just for the archival aspect of it. It’s something I know my mother would have loved. I could always dive into it when I’m feeling nostalgic for watching her listen to his records when I was a little kid.

Barrett Bowie

Hmmm, to echo other comments on this thread, I might be tempted to snag this at a lower price.

While Elvis released only 6 truly great albums in his entire career, I’m really loving these deep dives into the entire recorded output of long-running artists.

I loved similar collections from Dylan, Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Leonard Cohen, Harry Nilsson, and several others. Even the “bad” or even “ugly” albums of legendary artists (when listed to in chronological order) become fascinating documents of aging, squandered talent, pandering insecurity, substance abuse, record company meddling, ill-advised experiments, etc. . . which of course also makes the “comeback” albums sound that much better!

(Elvis’ 6 great albums, by the way, are: Elvis Presley (1956), Elvis (1956), Elvis Is Back!, From Elvis in Memphis, Elvis Country [I’m 10,000 Years Old] + some version of his Sun recordings)

OceanBlue

I think Elvis Presley With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is missing…

Shano

These are albums put out when Elvis was alive.

Shane

This looks really good. Hopefully there will be more chances of grabbing this at around 100£ and I’ll certainly snatch it up. Just because of the faithful replicas that they promise.

Paul English

Nice looking set but too expensive considering that I forked out for The Complete Masters a few years back (Pop Market deal). I’ll stick with filling my FTD gaps.

Howie

Would love this but at £220 I will stick to The Complete Elvis Presley Masters which I ‘found’ and is only on 30 CDs and look better with the pictures of the vintage recording equipment on the CDs.

David

Did someone really type out all those tracks?

60 albums and about 3 good ones.

Rick

“Did someone really type out all those tracks?”

That was my first thought.

Denis Williams

£220!….Why?
I love Elvis have done for many years but these box sets are just overpriced rip-offs,looking at the track listing there is nothing new here, even on the so called rarities discs.
The artwork on the box is great also the book, though they are not worth £220.
This box set should be £100 at best even then not worth it!

colin

It is pricey admitted but if it was a £100 that would work out at £1.50 per disk and in my eyes that would be well worth it….

Scott

Just noticed something else confusing in this press release. Is it 60 discs or is it really 62 discs? In the listing of the included albums, for “Album 36” (“From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis”) it says “2 discs” yet the track listing for “disc 36” contains the entire content of the original double album. The same thing for “Album 49” (“Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite”). It says “2 discs” in the description at the top but the entire original album is contained on the track list for “disc 49.”

I assume that the “2 discs” reference in the description is referring to the fact that the original releases were double albums. That is really misleading though. If that was their intention, they should have used a different descriptor. Since they are reproducing the feel of the original albums, it would make perfect sense in this context to put a double album across 2 CDs.

ed

I hope you didn’t have to type out 60 cds worth of tracklistings….

Billy Dojcak

Never been an Elvis fan. By the time I knew who he was he was on his way to being fat, Vegas Elvis. If I had to listen it would be the Sun years. This box is nothing but another cash grab.

Daran

Some of us love fat Vegas Elvis more than the young version!

Shano

But you admit to not being a fan.

colin

What I don’t understand is why would you be looking at Elvis box set and even writing anything if your not a fan? in fact don’t answer the mind boggles…

johnny

jpc.de were offering this for just £108 delivered, this morning…I ordered one…..I sent you a message on the Get in Touch section

Looks like they’ve cottoned on now, but worth watching in case they offer it again

Jimmy Holcomb

You’d think they would have included The Sun Sessions…..hopefully, for that much money, they’re on the 50s rarities disc.

Scott

It looks like all the Sun recordings are present, just not lumped together.

Some of the Sun recordings appeared on “Elvis Presley” (5 tracks), “For LP Fans Only” (4 tracks), “A Date With Elvis” (5 tracks) and “Elvis for Everyone” (1 track). So, that’s 15 of 24 Sun tracks on the main albums.

A quick glance at the track listing, Sun bonus tracks are included on “For LP Fans Only” (1 track), “A Date With Elvis” (1 track) and then 7 on the 50s Rarities disc. So, that would be the remaining 9.

Scott

If you zoom in on the picture of the open box, the book is opened up to the track listing for “From Elvis In Memphis” and it lists bonus tracks. I wonder if all the discs contain bonus tracks (or at least the ones that have been released previously with bonus tracks).

I’m really excited about this release, although I wish it were at tad bit cheaper (but less than $6 a disc is still a really great deal).

Marcel

I’d love to buy this, but alas I can’t listen to Elvis for much more than a few tracks.

Shano

Why would you love to buy it then?

Ben Williams

Lovely looking set but pricey on Amazon UK, considering you can get the two ‘Perfect Album Collections’ for around £25 each, as well as the Complete 50s Masters and 60s Studio Masters I for £13 (or thereabouts) each.. Maybe if this was £120 I would take the dive but too costly for now.. But a lovely set like I said!

Jon C

I’m curious as to how it compares to 2010’s Complete Masters box:

http://amzn.com/B004WP4ZQO

I know that one came and went super quick and it’s out of print now, but I remember it costing a ridiculous amount of money. This one is still expensive, but looks to be much more affordable.

[Also: Thankfully both omit “Having Fun with Elvis On Stage”, which has to be the winner of the Most Shameless Cash Grab Award. ;) ]

BritinDetroit

OK, what am I missing ? this shoots in at a modest 220 pounds +/- while the box sets 20 original albums and 20 perfect sound tracks can be had from amazon UK for about 57 quid combined. So its about 163 pounds extra for 20 additional albums and a book ?

Not feeling very Elvisy for this

Scott

I think the big difference (and for many the appeal) with this set is all the detail around the reproduced “mini-albums” with all the gatefolds, die cuts, inserts, sleeves, stickers, labels, etc. from the original releases.

I have both of “20 Original Albums/Soundtracks” sets and the repro album sleeves used on those are very bare bones and kinda lame. The CD artwork is also very generic on the discs themselves. The plus side on those sets is that many of those discs have bonus tracks which most of the discs in this new collection do not.

So, if your main concern is just the musical content, then the “20” boxes are by far the best deal. You can probably fill in the remaining albums/tracks individually and still come out ahead.

If the nostalgia of the whole “experience” of the covers, labels, etc. is important to you, that is what you’re paying a premium for with the new set. (As well as the consistency in having everything matching and in one place.)

colin

Very well explained and spot on…
