Paul McCartney confirms standards album Kisses On The Bottom
Paul McCartney has officially confirmed that his new standards album will be called Kisses On The Bottom, and not My Valentine as had been assumed.
The cheeky title comes from the album’s opener I’m Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter. Originally made a big hit by Fats Waller in 1935, the song opens with the lines ‘I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter and make believe it came from you. I’m gonna write words oh so sweet. They’re gonna knock me off of my feet. A lot of kisses on the bottom , I’ll be glad I got ‘em’.
As previously reported, the album is a collection of standards, as well as two new McCartney compositions My Valentine and Only Our Hearts. It’s produced by Tommy LiPuma, and features Diana Krall and her band, as well as guest appearances from Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder. Paul does not play any instrument on the record. Listen to My Valentine below:

Paul, obviously Macca wrote and played on “your mother should know” which certainly has a music hall feel. It was also part of Magical Mystery Tour which didn’t fare so well on Boxing Day so long ago.
Here we have way too many guest appearances, Paul playing no instruments and a “box of standards”…it feels like one disc before the ubiquitous Christmas Album and Greatest Hits Live.
Hope I’m wrong but……..
I think we need to give Paul a break. In ten years we got Driving Rain, Chaos and Creation, Memory Almost Full and Electric Arguments (The Fireman). If he wants to do a standards album for valentine’s day, so be it.
The RAM reissue will be around the corner soon with rumours of a ‘proper’ rock album later in the year. I doubt we will see 5 volumes of standards albums as per Rod!
Macca was singing “Your Mother Should Know” and “When I’m Sixty-Four” in 1967, and then “Honey Pie” in ’68.
Even with Wings we had “You Gave Me The Answer”, and then “My Baby’s Request” (which is actually on the deluxe edition of “Kisses..”)
Paul has always had a love for that sort of classic ’30s dancehall-type music, so it is neither a surprise, nor a ‘sell out’ for him to being doing this album in my opinion.
Whether it’s any good or not is a different matter, but Paul is not suddenly becoming something he’s not.
I guess I’ll probably like this album since “When I’m 64” and “Honey Pie” are 2 of my most favourite songs, and also for the fact that Stevie Wonder did some guest vocal.
I think Stevie just plays harmonica on one track
Sounds just plain awful. What next an album of classic duets with Rod ?
