Paul McCartney / The 7″ Singles

80 seven-inch singles in a box

Paul McCartney is to release a massive seven-inch singles vinyl box set next month. The 7″ Singles contains 80 vinyl seven-inch singles, starting with 1970’s ‘Another Day’ and working through the decades to ‘Women and Wives’ from 2020’s McCartney III.

There are 65 recreations of singles/promos using restored artwork from 11 different countries. Additionally 15 singles are included that have never before been issued on seven-inch. These are mostly digital-only releases or songs that were for other reasons not issued on seven-inch.

As you can imagine, 80 seven-inch singles requires a big box and so these are packaged in a two-piece, four-walled FSC-approved “Redwood pine and Birch Ply wooden art crate” manufactured in the United Kingdom.

This comes with a 148-page book containing foreword from Paul, essay by Rob Sheffield, recording notes, release dates, and chart information on each of the singles.

Some of the audio has been remastered and some of it is taken from the previous Archive Collection remasters. What has been remastered and what hasn’t, will be an interesting talking point and since certain albums haven’t been reissued yet (like Wings’ London Town and Back to the Egg) and Paul McCartney’s Give My Regards To Broad Street and Press to Play) this is an opportunity to hear some songs from those albums remastered for the first time (although a few cuts featured on 2016’s Pure McCartney).

This box set is limited to 3,000 units worldwide and according to the blurb, includes “1 exclusive test pressing randomly selected from the manufacturing process” which appears to be shown in the image below.

No surprises, this is expensive! In the UK is retailing for £615 and is only available via McCartney’s shop or Universal Music channels (like Sound of Vinyl or uDiscoverMusic). It is going to be available digitally and on streaming but there’s no CD edition.

The 7″ Singles is released on 2 December 2022, via MPL/UMC.

  1. Hey Paul. Enough time passed so I can ask now what I believe is a valid question: do you think this will receive a cd release edition?

  2. So, apart from a few tracks from unreleased Archive Collection albums (London Town, BTTE, Press, GMRTBS), there are a few new remasters that really raised my eyebrows. This is the complete list of new remasters and a bit of commentary:

Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey (Mono / 2022 Remaster)
Too Many People (Mono / 2022 Remaster)
These are new remasters since they are mono single mixes that were never released.
The Back Seat of My Car (2022 Remaster)
Single mix, without the bleed from the Ram On.
The Mess (Live at The Hague / 2022 Remaster)
    Helen Wheels (2022 Remaster)
    Sally G (2022 Remaster)
No idea, since they are exactly the same tracks from Archive Collection. (RRS and BOTR)
    Love In Song (2022 Remaster)
I believe this single mix was only available as a lossy track on Paul’s website.
    Girls’ School (2022 Remaster)
    Backwards Traveller/Cuff Link
    I’ve Had Enough (2022 Remaster)
    Deliver Your Children (2022 Remaster)
    London Town (2022 Remaster)
    I’m Carrying (2022 Remaster)
    Daytime Nightime Suffering (2022 Remaster)
    Old Siam, Sir (2022 Remaster)
    Spin It On (2022 Remaster)
    Getting Closer (2022 Remaster)
This is the London Town/Back To The Egg stuff. You’ll notice a couple of tracks are not explicitly mentioned as remasters, and I’d say it’s probably because they were on Pure McCartney. It also means that none of those albums were remastered before (so they weren’t on the can yet for the Archive Collection).
Coming Up (Live At Glasgow / 2022 Remaster)
Finally the full US version of the single was released, with the singalong part.
Lunch Box / Odd Sox (2022 Remaster)
No idea why it was remastered.
    Ebony And Ivory (2022 Remaster)
    Rainclouds (2022 Remaster)
    Take It Away (2022 Remaster)
    Get It (2022 Remaster)
‘ll Give You A Ring (2022 Remaster)
    Tug of War (2022 Remaster)
This is one of the most mysterious remasters, since – except for Take It Away, Tug Of War and Get It, which are unique single versions – all others were recently remastered (and/or) remixed on Tug Of War.
No More Lonely Nights (Playout Version / 2022 Remaster)
The only track never remastered from Give My Regards To Broad Street.
    Spies Like Us (2022 Remaster)
    It’s Not True (2022 Remaster)
Pretty Little Head [Remix] (2022 Remaster)
    Write Away (2022 Remaster)
Only Love Remains [Remix] (2022 Remaster)
Tough On A Tightrope (2022 Remaster)
Some Press To Play tracks and, for some reason, the Stranglehold/Angry single appears WITHOUT a remaster label. I think it is just some mistake, but…
Once Upon A Long Ago (2022 Remaster)
    Never remastered before.
Où Est le Soleil (2022 Remaster)
Also a mystery, as it was remastered in 2017.
    Mama’s Little Girl (2022 Remaster)
    Also previously remastered.
The Long And Winding Road (Live / 2022 Remaster)
    C Moon (2022 Remaster)
    Birthday (Live / 2022 Remaster)
Good Day Sunshine (Live / 2022 Remaster)
    All My Trials (2022 Remaster)
Tripping The Live Fantastic tracks, never remastered.
    Hope Of Deliverance (2022 Remaster)
    Long Leather Coat (2022 Remaster)
    C’Mon People (2022 Remaster)
    I Can’t Imagine (2022 Remaster)
Off The Ground tracks, never remastered.
    No Other Baby (2022 Remaster)
Brown Eyed Handsome Man (2022 Remaster)
    Fabulous (2022 Remaster)
    Run Devil Run, never remastered
    Tropic Island Hum (2022 Remaster)
    Never remastered
Dance Tonight (Demo / 2022 Remaster)
For some reason, the only track remastered from Memory Almost Full, the “brickiest” Macca album ever.

My main curiosity is why the new remaster of Tug of War. By the way, all these tracks are now available in Hi-Res on those HD-sites.

    1. Yes it’s a really good box!!
Loved the little odd looking presenter!
Can’t help thinking that they’ve did the counterfeiting community a huge favour by showing just exactly how to make one!

  3. Sold out in most places now . I still think for the actual product it’s well priced . I’m not surprised it’s sold well , it’s a niche product so it’s not going to appeal to the casual buyer

  4. .

Be amusing to one day find out that when Sting saw this, he immediately found himself thinking,

600+ ??……….for a bunch of previously released singles ?? Note to Self: Ditch ALL plans for any future “digital only” releases!!

    .

  5. Maybe I’m missing something here… I thought he was, or liked to come across as, very concerned and aware about environmental issues…

an 80 vinyl singles box, that could have fitted on 5-6 CDs???

    1. Statements like ‘This release is stupid’ really push my buttons.

It is not stupid in itself, it’s just that you (and I) are not the target market.

If something gets released and doesnt sell (for whatever reason, price, wrong content, wrong marketing etc) then ‘perhaps’ it might be considered a failure.
However in this case I would suggest that it has achieved everything that the McCartney marketing team wanted to achieve:
-It has sold out generating a fair amount of cash for the McCartney bank
-It has generated some publicity (both good and bad but publicity nonetheless)
      – It is a lovely collectors piece (If you are into vinyl – which I am).

It’s out of my price range and would be at half the price but that doesn’t make it an invalid release.

      Just my 2 cents worth…

      1. Those are fair points, and I was feeling particularly cranky when I posted before. If I had no monetary concerns, I’d probably buy it myself! And a much larger house with room to store it!

  6. I wonder how many purchasing this Box Set did so as an investment? It seems some who missed out are now willing to pay over £200 the RRP on eBay. Abba’s No.3 hit from 1976 comes to mind and I mean both Side A (from Arrival) & Side B – well if you know then you know! Unless you have a Juke Box, who plays singles these days? Not that many of these Macca singles will feel the love of a needle drop!
PS Now it’s SOLD OUT how long until the Coloured Vinyl Edition Box Set is announced?

  7. Interesting comments on here.
Whilst I’ve been highly critical of some other McCartney packages, I actually quite the look of the set. It seems to have been done well and no echoes of the gimmicky Egypt Station luggage. I’d quite like it in my collection but there’s no way I would pay £615 for it.
Vinyl singles were an essential part of my youth growing up in the 7o’s but frankly they are too much of a faff nowadays. Nobody wants to be getting up every 3 minutes to change sides, so this is really just a collectors piece & £600 is a lot for an ornament.
I’m also slightly distrusting of McCartney’s team and wonder whether this 3000 copies limit will hold, or whether we might find a further different coloured vinyl version emerging?

  8. As soon as I got notification, i knew I wanted this set but just could not make up my mind if I could afford it. Now, the “shall I / shan’t I??” has been taken out of my hands, as it seems it has sold out. But a question has been asked elsewhere, and as PM seems entralled with digital downloads etc, I wonder if the full download will come with a digital file of the book and also whether each single will come with the relevant artwork sleeve or just the picture of the side of the box for all of tracks. I hope the former as it would offset the disappointment of missing out on the box, but I won’t be holding my breath,

  9. I finally found the courage and took the gamble to buy it. Maybe the value of the box will rise in the next years and help to pay for more interesting box sets. If it’s sold out there will be some crazy Beatles fan to pay a huge amount of money for it, like the one he parodied in the video for “My brave Face”. If not, I ll have a nice wooden box on my shelf that will attract ridicule from my friends when they hear what i paid for it.

  10. 80 singles because he’s 80 years old this year? Would’ve rather seen a 4 cd box with all his singles or a greatest hits instead of Pure. My Brave Face and Young Boy should have been on it.

  11. Hopefully this will be released with the same content on a CD Boxset at a more reasonable price.(Though wouldn’t want each single as a CD, that would push up the price and environmental impact). Can’t think why Sir Paul wouldn’t. Failing that there’s always streaming.

It’s a stunning looking vinyl set I think but was never an option for me as it was out of my budget. Well done to those who nabbed a copy.

  12. Paul as you are mate’s with Mike Mc cartney,
Can you not call him up and ask him to do you a favour and get Paul to do a interview with you??
I mean the guys riding about in the back of taxis yacking to people so why would he not come on here??? Make the call ,,, can only say no!!

  13. Considering the tough times some are going through at present, he could have done this in a series of boxes, but no.
    A box of 80 45’s.
Some will love it and that’s absolutely fine. I’m a fan, but the idea of an 80 disc set is simply exhausting.
I have nearly all of the tracks anyway. It’s therefore not really aimed at me.
Or perhaps it is, and I just don’t understand him anymore (or vice-versa).

  14. Zero interest in vinyl. Would be a magnificent opportunity to put out a CD box set of all the Singles but I guess that would be too logical or practical.

    1. Why would a cd box be any more practical than a vinyl box??
If you want to hold music in your hands then a 7 inch
Record is gonna be more fun than a cardboard cd sleeve is it not??
Not that many people will actually have it in their hands that often, and unless you had a carousel cd player you’d still have to feed the discs in one at a time!! I’m not Mr Spock so will pass on the logical bit!!!

  15. I don’t envy anyone buying this product. There are several unofficial download collections(Notably the one from “Remasters Workshop”) which give you all of this music and more (12″ single & CD single extended mixes). I’ve got that collection and burned it to CD-R. If McCartney someday resumes his archive CD/DVD boxed set series, I’ll be there to buy it. I want more vault material from the “Good Ol’ Days”.

  16. To be fair, Paul warned us of his forthcoming ruthless fan milking 52 years ago in the lyrics to ‘Come and Get It’:

If you want it, here it is, come and get it
Mmh, make your mind up fast
If you want it, any time, I can give it
But you’d better hurry ’cause it may not last
Did I hear you say that there must be a catch?
Will you walk away from a fool and his money?

The answer to the the last question, if you’re Macca, would appear be ‘no, I won’t’.

  17. My opinion on this release is entirely academic (because I wasn’t going to, and now can’t, buy it). But here it is anyway.
This is a great SDE! (a great big SDE, I suppose). Compared to the current going price for 7″ singles, the sticker on this set is fair. And it’s all content (well, except for the wood crate). No scarves, no resin dwarves (which were actually a pretty keen trick), no USB stuck in a metal apple – or royal whatever that thing was from the Queen USB/FLAC set. I think the only way the content could have been better is if it was a comprehensive box of Sir Paul’s singles. But I suspect sorting out the real definition of “comprehensive” would have introduced problematic limits on proceedings. Instead, we get nearly all the stuff, with some interesting new bits thrown in.
They could have thrown in a Blu-ray or USB with the collection in digital form. But that would have raised the price by a couple hundred.
Anyway, that’s my view from the cheap seat. Congrats to everyone who got one or two, hope you enjoy them greatly!

  18. How Much? Seriously there has NEVER been a comprehensive Singles set for Macca (at least not legally) but is this the way to do it? Elton is another artist who has many Greatest Hits packages but not one complete singles set. This should be a 4 or 5 CD set as well.

  19. I’m glad I got a copy but I’m surprised this sold out so quickly. It’s expensive and fairly useless. Reminds me a bit of the Prince Sign O The Times vinyl singles box that sold out instantly. Now unopened in a box in my basement.

    1. Did you keep the box the singles came in?
It was worth keeping in case you wanted to flog it.
I should know as I own one!
I’m not going to sell mine.

  20. Thankfully this is sold out, so I don’t have to decide whether I can really afford to buy this or not.
Singles chosen by Paul, but why the need for C-Moon to be present on 3 singles.
At least an excuse to go into the loft to get my 70s and 80s McCartney singles and give them a spin.

  21. First, I would like to say how much I have appreciated the nuances of the discussion below on this release and for Paul and SDE for alerting myself and others to it.

Second, I am a mid-level collector and obsessive and do not buy everything by my favourite artists as we witness an arms race in the pricing of deluxe box sets to extract the maximum profit from a diminishing audience. I never bought the Macca Archive Box Sets always going for the smaller 2 CD releases (and now regret that); fell off the neverending Neil Young Archive reissue programme with the ridiculous Archive Vol 2 (which contained three reissues put out in the previous twelve months); and I never bought any of the posthumous Miles Davis boxes (having all the music he had released in his life).

Having said for the first time with a big Macca box I bought this last night thanks to the heads up by SDE. I immediately wondered if I had done the right thing: price, musical practicality, having all the tracks already.

My reasoning was: a) a fantastic collector’s item; b) I will get real enjoyment having it – and will enjoy the music on it – probably more listening to the digital version; c) my self-denying ordinance with the Archive series boxes was a factor for me here and wanting to have something special from the Macca back catalogue.

Having said all of this I am really aware that the price point of this and the limited run of this is very exclusionary and is part of a bigger picture abt recording artists and the music industry. Anyone arguing that the price is not an issue is either TOO wealthy or TOO nsensitive to others. More than this the logic of price and marketing go against the democratisation of popular culture which the Beatles stood for and Macca has claimed he embodies with all his ‘I am an ordinary chap’ stuff (much of which I think is genuine re: his groundness).

We do live in a world far removed from the values of the 1960s and any sense of egalitarianism in society and music. And in particular I agree with the comments below from FrenchDuke79 that releases such as this give succour to ‘a musical class system’ which is neither attractive or in the end sustainable.

Having said all of the above I am happy to have got a copy of this box: it feels a bit daring to have spent all that money and I will have to pull my pennies in elsewhere.

Thanks again Paul and SDE for alerting folk like myself, the discussion below and if MPL and Capitol take any notice: when oh when are we finally going to get LONDON TOWN and BACK TO THE EGG? They should have been out THREE YEARS AGO to coincide with the 40th anniversary of BTTE. Please get your act together and show some degree of respect of fans who are buying these products with their hard earning monies at a time when there is a cost of living crisis.

    1. If you want it and can afford it, that’s fine ! That is not my case. I’m a big McCartney fan, but not the point of buying this enormous boxset with lots of songs I’m not interested in. Honestly, a 70’s boxset would have been very welcome for me. I don’t really want to listen to Hope of deliverance again. There is a market for it, it has sold out very quickly. So,hats off to whoever did it.

    2. “I will get real enjoyment having it – and will enjoy the music on it…” That’s it – you’ve nailed it – nothing more needs saying, especially to the people on here that get enjoyment from “holding the music in your hands”.

      1. You missed the last part of Gerry’s sentence ‘….probably more listening to the digital version’.

I’d be surprised if anyone who’s bought this as a collectors item (investment), which is part of Gerry’s reasoning for buying it, will ever play the records and possibly never open it. Doing so will devalue the product.

The record companies and artists should be grateful for any physical purchases when it can all be obtained digitally. That’s why I can’t understand why they want to diminish the cd by not making it available for many recent releases.

    3. Personally, I got a lot of enjoyment out of NOT buying it but good luck to those who did get one and could afford to buy it for their pleasure or as an investment – or both.

    1. I bought hundreds of singles from the mid 70s through to the late 80’s and all my singles had the small centre hole. Big centres were for Juke Box singles, at least in the UK. So I guess traditional depends on where and when you grew up.

      1. We never had the RCA 7 inch big centre players in the UK so all of our 7 inch singles had the standard hole, albeit that the majority had a push out centre piece held in place by 3 or 4 bits of plastic. But we never embraced the big centre hole over here as the format war didn’t happen in the same way. It wasn’t led by companies and patents as much as the ideological change from 78s to 45s and 33s.

      2. Old record shops, Kennedy’s of Leeds for instance had contracts with the people who supplied and stocked the UK and European jukeboxes, they then sold all the old singles from them and supplied the adaptor so you could play them at home!!

          1. Well Dave you are absolutely correct they did have a market stall, but there main shop 30 George Street,30 eastgate, the record kiosk Leeds outdoor market,,
Now here’s the story about how a 54 year old from Glasgow who has never been to Leeds has so much info on Kennedy’s!in early June I stayed in the grand hotel in Scarborough, outside the hotel the have a couple n of shops that sell old stuff,I went in and in one of the display cabinet there was a 7 inch single bag from the early 70s a fiver, you know you bought your records and the shop gave you a little paper bag with their name and number and a little drawing, that’s how I could tell you the exact address, now here’s a little quiz for anybody who wants to do their research on Kennedy’s they had a little scam going very profitable it’s all on Google if anybody can tell me what it was???

          2. Hi John, found this….
Kennedys. An ex-jukebox 45 supplier housed inside the Kirkgate Market. Bit of a swindle going on in Kennedys. They would remove the singles from their original picture bags and flog them to you in plain white sleeves. Then there was a rack where they put the picture bags and you could buy them for an extra 10p.

  22. Can’t understand why they allowed a 2 copies limit – encouraging people to buy 2 and then flip one on ebay to pay for the other.

Should have been strictly 1 copy per person.

    1. I think you answered your own question. They allowed 2 so people could buy 2, and then flip one on ebay to pay for the other.
Can’t think of any other particularly valid reason. Well, maybe one to open & play, one to leave sealed & stash away. But that’s just a variation on the first reason.

      1. A more valid reason would be for someone to buy one for their selves and another for a gift for a friend!!
It’s not everyone that’s a Arthur Daley, just kind people with deep pockets!!

  23. I can’t imagine many of the people buying this aregoing to buy it and sit and change each record, listening to each one. I love vinyl but changing 7″ records seems like a massive pain in the butt. Its nice, it’s interesting, but to me this just seems like a Christmas present for collectors with significant disposable incomes. It will most likely sit on a shelf in it’s original packaging like some 1980’s action figure. Forever gaining value but being too precious to be touched and enjoyed.

Saying “just don’t buy it” though always seems a little churlish to me. Some people are big fans and feel left out because they cannot afford it. Even if they could save for it they are not quick enough because it’s so limited, announced and sold out in 24hrs. It’s like some kind of musical class system. However, although I get the disappointment around the limited number and the price during this climate, we need to remember that artists/musicians are often not the considerate working class heroes people would like them to be. PMcC is a working musician and wants to make the best return on his product. Can’t blame the chap. It’s a business at the end of the day.

And…….as frustrating as it is, its not like a standard multi-channel mix, that already exists and is online, was left off of a box set for no good reason. ;)

  24. Why didn’t they do a Brilliant Live Adventures deal and sell each single for a tenner and then charge for the empty box (only to not press enough boxes for each set being sold)? Macca, you need better business people on your team ;)

  25. UK, 11.30 am Fri – still available at McCartney’s US shop – £625ish with taxes included, and free shipping to the UK!! Can’t say I know many/any of the singles since about 2000.

  26. It looks like due to the speed of selling out that possibly a few of these are going to be immediately put up for sale for a profit on eBay!, who would have thought that Macca is the must have this Christmas!. Forget your PlayStation 5 etc, vinyl is the new earner!.

  27. If they are going to create something like this that is very expensive I fail to see why they do not just go for broke and reissue every single of Macca’s career, rather than just this 80 selection.I am guessing some Macca singles are missing? He’s had more than 80 surely? This collection is so expensive anybody willing buy it would also be willing to buy the complete Macca singles collection for probably a few £hundred more in price. So why aint it a completist collection?

    1. I guess that’s because he’s 80. It’s already a fairly extensive – and expensive – collection. I suppose there are b-sides missing, but that’s enough for a lifetime.

  28. I think Team Macca have missed a trick here. They should maybe have made this a complete box of UK singles, and then followed that up with a US box in Spring next year. Then a European box the following Autumn. And made sure that if any of the singles didn’t have a picture sleeve for a particularly territory that that single came in a generic sleeve, so you’d have to collect all three boxes to get all the picture sleeves.

And then release all the boxes AGAIN the following year in coloured vinyl variants.

As it is, they’re clearly leaving money on the table. Amateurs :)

  29. No issues with such a box set being released, let’s remember the demographic of people who are interested in McCartney worldwide and many of them can afford a one off box set even if they play the vinyl or not. It may sound like an elitist release but hey, who cares, not me, I’m not jealous I have enough music by McCartney to listen to.

Anyone who does purchase the box set, good for you, it looks like a nicely put together item.

I didn’t read such an outcry for the Depeche Mode 12″ box sets yet if you’re collecting all of them, the total outlay must be over £1,000. Does that mean if the McCartney box was split into three parts and released three months apart, more folks would be happy even though the total outlay will be the same?

    1. I’d preferred it if this had split into separate decades as I’m really only interested in the 1980s singles. If they were released in a cardboard case I’d have bought it straight away. They could do this at a later date but I doubt they will. Also a shame this is not getting a cd release, it would need 8 CDs for all the tracks, packaged in a 7” size box so we get the same booklet, that would be fantastic.

      1. No heritage artist is going to do that though (split into decades). Because everyone of them knows that they will barely sell any of the later work. Not many casual fans of any artist are going to shell out beyond the “imperial phase”. With the possible exception of the Bowie box sets, but even then the staggered release will draw in a few extra who, having bought the first two feel honour bound to buy the next two. Current cost of living crisis just makes this even more likely. Don’t need to name names but I am struggling to think of anyone where an SDE of album 10 or era 2000s+ would sell anywhere near as much as an SDE of album 1,2, 3 or 4 or era 1970s or 1980s.

  30. All sold out .Staggering when you consider the flaming pie uber and Harrisons
all things uber are still available a year on at roughly the same price .

  31. I wonder if whoever designed this had George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass Uber” as a reference point?. Could well be albeit 1/6 of the size. My most expensive purchase ever and a lot harder to move and store!.

  32. Ok I begged one. It’s really against my better judgement because something tells me it’ll be on Amazon in a bit for half the price. I’ll never play any of it but good collector item.

    1. Looks like a wise decision as sold out and now probably worth considerably more that £615, for those desperate for a Christmas gift for someone!.

  33. Good for those that want this. Seems like an expensive paperweight (for me). I’d rather spend Money on London Town/Back to The Egg deluxe editons.

  34. Over $1.8million In case you were wondering why this behemoth was created.
Approximately $1.8 million (more if the pound stops falling) in gross revenue.

I’m sure the costs of design and manufacture run to mid 6 figures, but theres a lot of potential profit here.
Kudos to whichever marketing genius thought this one up. I’m guessing they did a lot of market research to come up with the 3,000 figure.

Theres probably 3,100 people on the planet who both want this NOW, and can afford it. And PML have most of their names and email addresses.

Free shipping if you buy from the artist store and happen to live in the US or UK, so that’s (genuinely) decent.

Trying to figure out if there is any artist where I’d plump for this. Although any artist I think of wouldn’t get close to 80 singles.

40 for $400 in great packaging with a fancy book. You know, I might be tempted. Please don’t try me.

  35. I got an email from The Sound of Vinyl just after 2pm today (well, yesterday now), and bought it straight away from McCartney’s online store (already had account there). No-brainer for me – looks great, and I probably will play it end to end at least once.

I realise I’m going to invite criticism here, but… why is everybody upset about this? If you don’t want it, don’t buy it, simple as that… why the need to slag off Sir Paul? Or indeed those of us who do actually want to buy it? It might be expensive, but so what? Rolls Royces are very expensive, but you don’t hear people moaning that they shouldn’t make them or sell them, or that they’re too expensive for ordinary drivers, or that the manufacturer is just plain greedy, or that people who buy them have more money than sense (alright, maybe the green-ness element – substitute Tesla then).

Rant over! I’m going to look forward to it anyway. When I’m dead my youngster will be able to sell it for a few quid more than I paid I imagine (look at the price of the Beatles in Mono vinyl set on eBay these days… and yes, I bought one of those too). I might as well get some enjoyment out of spending my youngster’s inheritance, and she can sell it once I’m not around.

I’m sure I will have offended some, outraged others… apologies if I have!

    1. You are absolutely spot on! Why criticise something you’re never going to buy? I actually think it’s fairly reasonable in terms of value for money but of course, it’s a big outlay in the first place. For that reason I decided to ‘sleep on it’ before making a decision and now the matter is out of my hands – they’re all sold out. I’m feeling slightly relieved which shows that this probably wasn’t a purchase for me but I won’t knock the scale of ambition and hope that other artists take a similar route. If you’ve bought one, enjoy it!

  36. Haven’t Pet Shop Boys been threatening to do something like this but with 12” singles? That would be worth the £600+ price tag. This set? Not so much…

  37. When I looked at his official store (and subsequently Recorstore etc) there is a comment that it is limited to a maximum of 2 copies per customer. That made me chuckle.
As an aside Paul every time I click on your website I get a “We value your privacy” warning which I have to agree to in order to continue. I used to get these occasionally but it is every time I access your site now. I am not experiencing this issue with any other website I visit.

      1. Yes Paul for the last two weeks IV been getting the advertisement bar constantly on the bottom of the screen,IV got to repeating press the x only for it to immediately come back, I only have a phone not a large screen so a real pain, only site that this happened

    1. Better still, imagine how slowly you could count the 615 £1 coins you didn’t shell out over the same period as listening to this bloated monstrosity. At (159 tracks x average 210 seconds per song), I make that (very roughly) a minute for every coin. And you’d hear a lovely “ching” sound every minute knowing:
      (a) that you wouldn’t have to listen to ‘Tropical Island Hum’ and many similar slices of cheese
      (b) you’d be helping Sir Paul not to have to listen to those nasty “chings” himself

I was gobsmacked watching Paul conjure ‘Get Back’ out of thin air on the Peter Jackson curated movie. He was once capable of absolute genius. Now this.

What a very long and declining road.

  38. I have been collecting the various country issues of a few of McCartney’s singles, especially since a number of the ’70s USA releases came in generic “company” sleeves. I am really interested in what country’s pic sleeve will be used for “Junior’s Farm”. That being said, I could also see them issuing some in generic sleeves “since that’s the way [single title] came out in [country].”

    1. I bought the original “Mary Had A Little Lamb” (cute) and “Give Ireland Back To The Irish” (controversial) singles at the time. My copies (in the UK) had uniquely specific labels as well as sleeves, so it should prove to be an interesting (though expensive) collection to have.

  39. As someone said earlier on another platform(?), he and his management team are doing their utmost best to avoid the London Town/Back to the Egg etc Archive releases, with these crazy offerings. Though, some folk will buy it.

    1. I read that forum too and have to wonder if Macca wants those two to ever come out anymore. I heard somewhere that London Town was already finished and ready for an Archive release. This vinyl singles box is a real letdown.

  40. I think this is brilliant, just the sheer chutzpah of it. If you want all 80 singles it’s quite reasonably priced. It’s just that literally nobody wants 80 7″ singles, not even the people who will buy this box.

  41. I suppose if nothing else if you were able to afford this box set it would come in useful when the fuel oil and cost of living “crisis” really kicks in by providing you with something to burn to keep you warm. Might be worth a small fortune trading it for some food possibly?

  42. I’ve been looking for a nicely crafted storage box for my collection of 45’s. This one’s a bit expensive but think of all those free 45’s that come with it.

  43. So I was quite excited that this would be on streaming but now I see that several Off The Ground singles/b-sides are missing – Big Boys Bickering, Kicked Around No More, Keep Coming Back To Love, Down to the River, Deliverance, Off The Ground, Cosmically Conscious, Style Style, Sweet Sweet Memories, Soggy Noodle —- I have them all on the original CDs but they deserve a sonic upgrade and I was so looking forward for about two minutes to adding them to my 58 hour Macca playlist on Qobuz. I should have whomever’s job at MPL messed this up.

    1. I agree that Off The Ground / Cosmically Conscious should have been included, but beyond that none of those songs were actually ‘B-sides’ so it’s a bit of a redundant argument.

    2. They will be available in the Paul McCartney / The 7″ Singles Deluxe Edition box available in 3 monthes from now at €1250 and a Paul McCartney / The 7″ Singles Super Deluxe Edition with one more single will be available 3 monthes later for € 2100!

  44. Baring that one-off Steven Wilson album, this must be the most expensive box set to feature on Super Deluxe Edition since the Woodstock 50th Anniversary set back in 2019. For those keeping a check on such things, that was 38 CD’s in a box with flags and banners, etc with a price of around £632. I agonised over that for some time, eventually deciding that it was too much and I really
    had nowhere to store it.
For the price of this Macca set I could easily purchase both the Caravan and John Mayall box sets that I mentioned in a post earlier today, and have enough left over to pick up the forthcoming Horslips set, and still have enough to cover the postage on that, leaving £6 to purchase a celebratory bottle of wine. But I’m not going to; just saying…

      1. Yes John, you’re absolutely right. I’d forgotten about that so had a quick check up and that was going for £850 when first released. Gawd knows what sellers are getting for it now.

        1. Amazon keeps telling me the GnR set is still available to pick up at $500, which is half the price it debuted at!

The most overpriced SDE I have is the Roger Waters The Wall SDE. The content to cost ratio is so low on it.

I paid more for the Pink Floyd Early Years box set, but even with the redundant DVDs in it, it was an absolute treat content-wise for Floyd fans.

        2. From £600 plus postage.
I don’t think a lot of the SDEs are a good investment in monetary terms.
There’s a few that sell out immediately and are fantastic, but you’ve probably missed out by the time you hear about it .

Sales are generally in decline and if people are buying them as investments it relies on the resale market not being flooded. There are a very few items that for some reason are worth a fortune but not many.

I remember not buying the Queen reissue of Rocks with the flying phoenix in 1997 as I already had Rocks on LP & CD & the reissue was just a different cover. I examined and rejected it in HMV on Oxford Street. I’d only just started working and didn’t have much money. Obviously that is the one that you only see for an absolute fortune these days (more than enough to buy the Macca singles box). But it is very much the exception.

  45. I doubt the mastering on this will be much of a talking point. People don’t buy these sort of things to play. It’s a collector’s piece and collectors will want to keep it in pristine condition.

    1. Great question, Michael. But with diamonds like ‘Ode To A Koala Bear’, ‘Tropical Island Hum’, ‘Once Upon A Long Ago’, ‘We All Stand Together’ and ‘Fuh You’ on offer it would seem churlish just to flush 615 notes down the loo. With this much vinyl on board for no good reason, this is a great opportunity for any Just Stop Oil objector to take one for the team and keep on burning the planet down.

      Harsh?

  46. I’m tempted to buy it simply because it will be so sought after and I like that. But 227 Euros shipping? No, sorry. For that price his driver needs to deliver that to me personally. Also, when will these silly stores (uDiscover, TSOV) start removing local (UK? EU?) VAT so that those living in other countries don’t have to pay their own VAT on top of the original one? We are talking about more than 100Euros here!

  47. I never understood these type of releases. Very collectable product, somewhat limited product and super expensive product. So who is the target market? Certainly not the actually fan base. It seems its done specifically for a wealthy few fans/collectors. But why? I don’t get the strategy…

  48. I guess I don’t understand the gripe. It is obviously intended for a very niche audience and uberfan. It is vinyl for godsake.

I understand and sympathize with those who honestly want it and are priced out but most of us don’t, so why complain?

That being said, I am awaiting a 24 LP boxset by my favorite band in the next year of material I already have on CD. And I intend to sell a kidney to purchase this set.

    1. Agreed. A lot of us are having to tighten our belts and even if I didn’t have to this would be out of my price range and therefore I am not the target (as much as I like McCartney and I think this looks like a lovely set).

However there are a lot of people for whom either the price is not an issue OR they have chosen to prioritise their collection over other things in their lives. This doesn’t make them any less sensible than me it just makes them different.
There’s a lot of SDE’s that get released that are outside my price range (especially now) but that doesn’t mean I resent them being released or resent those that can afford to buy them.

      Each to their own!

          1. Colm, if you’re going to get into Guided By Voices, it could cost you a fortune. Mr Pollard must lead the most profilic group in the history of popular music. They make The Fall seem pedestrian by comparison.

          2. Thanks Stan.
I saw their discography, goodness gracious!!

            I looked Mike D ( below) but I couldn’t find any 24LP box listed.
            Maybe sold out?

          3. Just wait until you hear about all the side projects. Robert Pollard (GBV) has released over 100 full length LPs under GBV, his own name and various side projects as well as dozens of singles, EPs and box sets. A collector’s dream/nightmare.

          1. It has been mentioned for sometime in the next year or so. Apparently vinyl reissues of the Suitcase boxsets, which is 16 discs. Supposedly 24 LPs. Don’t remember if it is 2023,2024 or 2025.

  49. I get it – limited edition. Totally. But £615. Ouch. That’s £7.60 or so per single, which I guess some may say is reasonable – but of course, you’ve got to buy 80 in bulk here. The box isn’t anything to write home about either. Still, it’s McCartney and those with (very) deep pockets might well go for it. However, at these prices, this thing isn’t in my orbit, or anywhere near it.

  50. This looks great! Going to see if I can maybe buy 3 copies of it. One to play, one to display and one to store in protective coverings. I’ve got loads of storage space I need to fill at my house, and loads and loads of money I don’t really know what to do with.
Or at least that’s what Universal and Sir Paul are hoping it seems.

  51. i had a fellow music fiend tell me just this morning, that he read that SDE’s are going to be a thing of the past. the demographic is primarily 40 and over, although, obviously there are younger people who (as the tag line states, wants to hold the music in their hands)…but that the special, deluxe stuff will get pricier, and have smaller pressings…because the demographic will start dying off, and it just won’t be worth it to companies, unless they charge higher and higher prices…this makes me sad…but i get it…unless there is an even bigger revolution regarding physical product…i will just try to remain grateful for every sde i get my hands on…and hope that annie lennox gets a “diva deluxe” put out by the time i die…lolol…thanks for this site…were physical music is so valued

  52. Looks like a big cumbersome waste of money. I got the Beatles 7 inch singles box a couple of years ago which was far cheaper and more compact.
In other news – New Order have announced the Low Life deluxe box and associated 12 inches for January at last. Looks good, but again a big price bump compared to the last two boxes. Vinyl inflation seems to be here to stay.

    1. I’ve been collecting (or rather rebuying the ones I bought the first time back in the 80s) all the 12 inches, but this is quite a hike at £15 a pop. As for the box set, a wonderful album but £150!!!?? I remember Movement being about £70-80.

      1. Recordstore are selling the boxset at £170 and the associated 12 inch singles at £20. The price hike from the previous boxset and 12 inch singles is pretty steep (i picked up the 12 inches at £10 each). The boxset is an LP, 2 CDs, 2 DVDs and a 48 page book. £170? Really? LP £30, CDs and DVDs £10 each, book and box £5 each (I’m being generous here with all these prices) £80 in total. OK add a bit and push it to £100 tops.

        1. I actually got the first four from HMV as a bundle which worked out nicely at £8 each. The second four I waited a bit but they were £10, except for Blue Monday, which I thought I’d missed out on. Thankfully it was repressed. I don’t need them and I’ve nothing to play them on, but on an emotional level these records meant everything to me. They still do.

          1. Agree Stan. Can’t wait for The Perfect Kiss twelve inch. Get yourself a turntable, the nostalgia rush of putting them on is amazing.

  53. You had me at ‘It is going to be available digitally and on streaming’. Shame there’s no CD but hardly surprising, vinyl is the record company’s cash cow these days, but for how much longer…

  54. I am no Macca fan but this is ridiculous. If this is anything like the Beatles single box, the singles will be simple accoutrements for storing fruit. Absolutely warped and unplayable. At least the Beatles fruit bowls were “only” EUR 100 but these are EUR 700. IKEA sell fruit bowls for much less. Wall hangings. Warning to anyone buying one – they have your name and address and will try to sell you chocolate teapots next.

  55. I just ordered 5 boxes as a Christmas gift for family members. Everyone should have the unforgettable singles of Sir Paul in their homes. Especially masterworks like Fu You, Biker like an icon, Party Party and We all stand together. I hope he will release a 12“ box, too. Lovely design, looks like something you could store potatoes in.

  56. For that money you would expect a dice or a plectrum.

But seriously, it looks very wannehaveable, but realisticly I’d never will put on a single. I actualy am someone who uses his physical purchases so this will be a skip for me.

  57. I guess the price per single is fine, but £615 is a lot upfront, I guess there’s enough PM fans in the world to justify this, but why not a cheaper CD box or compilation version for Christmas?

  58. If you can afford to part with that much money in one hit and you want it then buy it. A quick look on discogs shows that some of these singles in near mint condition command a much higher price than what they work out individually here in this box set. I don’t think I’ve seen a new release 7” vinyl retail for less than £10 in the last year either, so value for money wise I think it’s pretty reasonable. I couldn’t always afford what I wanted in my younger years and missed out. If this was an artist I loved then I wouldn’t hesitate.

  59. Why would you release an 80 x 7″ Box set – this is just bonkers and clearly aimed at those with more money than sense! Really sad in the current climate !

Is anybody really going to Play all 80 singles one after the other – I bet nobody does! I bet they all arrive with seam splits too!

  60. I am not really interested in Paul McCartney but for anyone interested there is a short video of the unboxing of this ridiculous crate on YouTube, Paul McCartney channel already.

    1. I have the clash cd replica box !! Very nice, loads of singles in mini cd form with pic sleeves,CDs look like vinyl, fopp where clearance them for a fiver years ago

  61. Nothing like tying up production time and resources on this expensive/unnecessary door stop. No ones going to play it and it’s too expensive to sit on the shelf! I just don’t get it.

  62. More proof that Mr. McCartney is out of touch with his fanbase. This ones a no. As a huge McCartney fan and collector, It hurts, but at that price, there is no other answer.

  63. This is expensive but it is very unique.
Over the years I forgot how many great singles, meaning the A and B side, Paul has released.
My favorite may be the ‘Jet’/’Let Me Roll It’ single.

  64. Pricey , yes but I can see why it’s priced at this premium. This definitely looks quality and isn’t designed for the casual fan , 3000 units also makes it desirable as a collectors piece . I’m impressed !

  65. As it’s Macca, I think I’ll wait for one of the coloured vinyl versions next year! Or the version using a different sustainable wood for the box?

      1. Poor wording on my part – I didn’t mean that the CD was specifically designed for compilations, more that it is the ideal use for the format and, indeed, was very much used as such throughout the 90s and early 00s. Many artists enjoyed huge success with a 70+ minute CD of hits, including The Beatles – “1” from 2000 was massive. Here, I was hoping for something like “Pure McCartney” with the tracks ordered across 8 or so CDs.

  66. I think that most McCartney fans would have preferred the “London Town” and “Back To The Egg” box-sets, rather than this one. I also think that this 7″ Inch box-set very expensive. I assume that also McCartney knows that grocery and energy prices have skyrocketed. Not every McCartney fan will be able to spend 615 pounds.

    1. I don’t think he’s expecting ‘ every McCartney fan to spend £615’ when its limited to only 3000 worldwide & will likely sell out pretty quickly to 3000 people who want it. I’m sure there are far more than 3000 McCartney fans who are totally unaffected by grocery/energy prices.
London Town/Egg will appear sooner or later – what fans prefer doesn’t really factor into it – McCartney does what he wants to do & at his own pace.

      1. True. It’s aimed at an elite buyer, but on the Archive Series in general, it’s definitely a case of later rather than sooner. We’re all getting on, and so sadly is Paul. Flaming Pie is all we’ve had in four years. I’ve long given up all hope on ever seeing Press To Play/Broad St. If London Town/Back To The Egg ever gets reissued. then that’s likely all we can hope for.

    2. MC cartney has millions of fans worldwide mate, your right not everyone could afford it, but I bet a lot more than 3000 that this thing is limited too can!! Will probably be worth a couple of grand the minute he dies!!,in fact I c a Xmas present to myself coming up!! But it would never be played,if I want a macca fix IV got the 4 dvd thing that came out years ago wingspan I think it’s called!!and how much does it cost per single less than a fish supper,a beautiful wooden box made in England and a lavish book!! He should really have thrown in a £20;gift card to spend at farmfoods on his ex wife’s veggie grub that would have really helped out in Thea’s trying times

  67. Not to justify the price, but you do get a test pressing, reproduced artwork from many different countries, and a booklet that hopefully is fairly exhaustive from an information perspective. You won’t get that from streaming.

On the other hand, why is 49B an etched side and not a song? (I mean, we know he hasn’t run out.) And just the time to flip/switch records… at 5 seconds per side (and I doubt you could actually do it that fast) you’re looking at over 13 minutes of wasted time.

If I was a huge fan I don’t think I’d discount it right away, but I’m not that big a Macca collector. Even the US price is more than what I paid for two tickets to the show I went to earlier this year (on the field, center view at Fenway Park). I think I’ll be going digital on this one.

    1. I assume “Party Party” is reproduction of the 7″ that came with the Flowers in the Dirt collector’s edition. That originally had an etched flip side. We’d have been better off with an etched a-side too, imho.

    2. Adam W.:

“And just the time to flip/switch records…”

You’re lucky this will be available digitally too.

Every time you listen to all 159 tracks in a row you can count yourself lucky for thirteen minutes of saved lifetime…

  68. I know I’m not going to alone in saying or thinking this; but a chronological CD box set of every a-side and b-side in their correct 7″ versions? Absolutely! Count me in.

I’m sorry but if you buy this, you have must have more money than sense. We’re all in the middle of a cost of living crisis. Well, maybe Paul isn’t, but most of us are.

  69. As a growing Macca fan who actually has very little on vinyl and I enjoy the 7″ format more and more it is great to see this. Having saved up I’m very fortunately able to order it at just over $600 including delivery in the USA from Macca’s ‘USA Store.’
I look forward to hearing these versions of the old and the new songs to me. Cheers! :-)

  70. Beyond the overall ridiculous nature of this set I’m curious about the test pressing part. This means they have 3000 test pressings by my math that’s Nearly 40 per single.

I feel like I have often heard it’s more like10 test pressings made so are they just making more to have this novelty collectible? Maybe a artist at McCartney levels gets a few more made (my other exposure is with Indy labels who sometimes have them for sale in small amounts.)

  71. Is that 80 bits of vinyl with not one note of previously unreleased music?! What a waste, no the wonder bands trying to get new music out are having pre-orders a year in advance, absolute madness…

    1. The Funny thing is this 4LP box set is no more expensive than when it originally came out 4 years ago.
So how can this be sold for the same price yet other companies are charging 2 or 3 times what they were charging 12 / 24 months ago??

  72. If there had been marbles and a scarf I’d have bought this…. More seriously, what a perfect example of a rock star and his commercial entourage either being totally divorced from reality or just completely avaricious. With all that is going on in the world just now, politically and economically, how could charging fans £600+ be justified for a collection of what is largely album rejects and singles filler? And why not a CD version? To push dedicated fans to shell out for the box? Surely CD is still the main format fans would prefer?

    1. With only 3000 copies pressed, rest assured that most of his fanbase will not be affected by this product. Fortunately (or is that unfortunately?) this is primarily a streaming gimmick.

  73. What a total waste of money !! Why bother ? Would have been a lot better on CD and cheaper to make in these hard times !! VERY DISAPPOINTED.

    1. I don’t do vinyl, but I suppose you wouldn’t generally play through the whole set, but rather maybe play one or two and then put an album on.

    2. You wouldn’t play the Macca singles one after the other. Probably best dipped into. Sometimes I have an evening when I’ll just play 7″s. Mine are in similar boxes; just grab one and pick at random.

  74. I know there’s a market for this.
    3,000 of them
    In a few yeaes 2,000
    Later, 1,000
Who will spend their retirement money to enjoy it, calling it an investment. Including a voucher for a PMcC BJ wouldn’t convince me.

    1. Presuming you don’t own any physical media with all that nasty plastic/vinyl or use any streaming services powered by servers running on carbon-based electricity ?

    1. He’d need to throw in his Hofner violin bass for me to be interested. It’s way out of my price league at the best of times, never mind when buying heating oil takes priority over lavish box sets.
I have nearly all of these tracks anyway in digital format, from either CDs or other sources.

      1. Too right, Peter. I went to a record store day a few years ago to buy a Fotheringay 7″ single. No price on it. Take it up to the counter and the bloke says £13! I nearly fainted. However, I’d driven down and queued for an hour, so I bought it. Glad I have it, but it was slightly galling to see it going for under a tenner on Amazon for years after.

  75. I actually think the price of this isn’t that expensive for what your get and it’s for sure going to go up in value I’m glad I’m not a Macca collector. Imagine if fans see this and are stuck for presents I feel for those who want it and I’m sure a lot will do.
I do think he should have left a bit of room for the other singles he no doubt will release though. Sting has yet to release his discography box set version 3 update!!.

  76. Exactly who does Paul McCartney think is going to have a spare £600+ for this? I mean I know it’s well packaged but that’s a ridiculous price especially in these “cash strapped” times!

    1. I’m sure there’s 3000 people out there that can afford it. It will also be streamed, in which case it will be free. So … catering for both ends of the market, in a sense …

    2. Ive got a spare £600 but sadly i don’t like McCartney enough to warrant a purchase. If you’re ‘cash strapped’ then just stream it for free – it’s not rocket science

  77. This is crazy even for Macca !
To release such an expensive box set with the world in such an economic crisis and his own worries about oil production making an ecological disaster, to make vinyl records.
I can’t get my head around his reason to do this .
Honestly I can afford to buy this but I won’t.
I was shocked when the email arrived.
I know each to their own and people will buy it , but I’ve had enough of the piss take .

    1. It probably would’ve been a more acceptable move (from this perspective) to release only a handful of vinyl singles of those songs (mainly from the last three albums) that haven’t been available in this format yet.

  78. Wow…good luck with the unboxing video for this one, Paul.

Was ‘The Loveliest Thing’ not a b-side? Perhaps a 12 inch track only? That’s a great song.
