The new Tears For Fears album is being issued on blu-ray audio with a Steven Wilson Dolby Atmos mix
A SDE-exclusive product
I am pleased to announce that SuperDeluxeEdition.com, in collaboration with the band and Concord Records, is taking pre-orders (via the SDE shop) for a very special blu-ray audio of Tears For Fears forthcoming album The Tipping Point, which features two spatial audio or surround sound mixes, including a Dolby Atmos mix of the album by musician and remixer extraordinaire, Steven Wilson.
The Atmos mix should surface at some point in the future via streaming services, but this is your one and only opportunity to own a physical copy on blu-ray. In addition to the Dolby Atmos mix, the blu-ray audio will also feature a 5.1 DTS-HD mix (also by Steven Wilson) which will not be available anywhere else, even on streaming.
The blu-ray is exclusive to the SDE shop and is a limited edition product. Only 2000 copies will be available. If you recall, we SOLD OUT of the same quantity of the SDE-exclusive deluxe CD of The Tipping Point in 24 hours, back in October, so secure your pre-order in at the earliest opportunity, to avoid any disappointment.
I’d personally like to make it clear that this product was not planned from the very beginning and therefore hasn’t been ‘held back’ for any kind of strategic reasons. It came about after discussions between SDE and Concord towards the end of last year, following the success of the SDE-exclusive deluxe CD (Steven Wilson completed his mixes in December). This blu-ray edition exists because SDE believes there is still a market for physical product when it comes to surround sound (or spatial audio mixes) and Concord Records and Tears For Fears share our enthusiasm, in this regard.
Reasons you should own this blu-ray!
- The album is truly stunning and the Dolby Atmos / 5.1 mixes take it to the next level
- It’s the only way to enjoy these spatial audio mixes of The Tipping Point via a physical product
- The DTS HD 5.1 mix of the album is totally exclusive
- You don’t have to subscribe to a streaming service like Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mixes
- It’s yours to keep forever. You own the product, you are not renting it from a ‘DSP’ (digital service provider)
- You love ‘Holding the Music in Your Hands‘, so here’s your chance!
- You enjoyed Steven Wilson’s remix work on Songs From The Big Chair and The Seeds of Love
- The blu-ray audio is a great format for audio and you don’t want to see it die off
- Supporting SDE with this venture could lead to similar collaborations with labels/artists
I know that you’ve only heard a couple of tracks so far, but let me assure you that The Tipping Point is a genuinely superb album and Steven’s surround sound remixes are wonderful and make full use of the rear channels for a truly ‘immersive’ experience. Being a blu-ray audio, this is not region-locked in any way, although without wanting to state the obvious you do need a blu-ray player and appropriate kit to enjoy these spatial mixes (see technical notes, below).
The Tipping Point blu-ray will be released on 25 February 2022 and is available to pre-order ONLY from the SDE shop using this link or the button below. The shop ships internationally, and all international orders will be sent tracked to ensure speedy and reliable service (we have kept international shipping prices as low as possible).
TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected. The DTS HD 5.1 mix should work with virtually all home cinema set-ups.
ADDITIONAL SHIPPING NOTES: Many of you will have already pre-ordered the SDE-exclusive CD. Unfortunately the SDE shop will be unable to combine shipping with your previous order. There are logistical challenges which prevent this, so the orders will remain separate and ship individually.

Congratulations Paul for the good work. Got my copy three days ago here in Spain even after customs.
Excellent album and superb SW 5.1 mix.
A bit disappointing that some hyenas are making tremendous money by reselling it. Currently from 69GBP to 249EUR on Discogs and from 77EUR to 299EUR on eBay.
Over a week since this was shipped to me, and still no sign of it arising. My brother, and a lot of other northern Ireland customers, are in the same position.
Apparently, instead of using their usual tracked 48hr delivery method, SDE used untracked 2nd class post as the delivery method this time around. So no one will have any idea what has happened to the “lost” orders. Meanwhile, there are loads of copies available on ebay, starting at around £80.
SDE have really dropped the ball on this. I’ve reached out to SDE asking if replacement copies will be made available to those customers who haven’t received their orders. I haven’t received a reply.
It is wrong to say “Instead of using their usual tracked 48hr delivery method, SDE used untracked 2nd class post”. All customers had a choice between 2nd class and Tracked 48. Your choice, it wasn’t forced on you. We are looking into the NI issues… Most people won’t ship there, but we still do. If this is the response when best efforts go awry then maybe we should review it. BTW, I’m sure it will turn up, but you may have to wait a bit longer.
Not seeing anyone else with delivery issues here, so where has Paul “dropped the ball” exactly when you had the choice of shipping options? 2nd class is available for a reason, zero priority in terms of speed, higher risk of it going missing, but for the lowest cost.
I got my deluxe CD and blu-rays from Paul yesterday to the USA with no problem, with the shipping choice based on my own risk comfort level. I’ve never had an issue with SDE on any of my previous purchases, Paul genuinely gives a damn about giving us great products to buy and gives a damn about customer service too.
Meanwhile, there are copies on eBay to bid on, but this was the case the day this sold out.
Thanks Andy. We are always going to try and resolve issues. But if people chose second class then they have to be realistic, it could just get caught up in Royal Mail’s system. Nothing is technically ‘lost’ – accordingly to Royal Mail – until Wed 9th which is 10 working days after most CDs/blu-rays in the UK were posted. So anyone who ordered via 2nd class post should not bother getting in touch until then, because obviously we have NO IDEA where your non-tracked package is, if you haven’t received it!
With world shipping delays the way they have been for the past three or four months I find it amusing to see someone complain that a shipment has taken a week to arrive. I doubt anything I’ve ordered in those months has arrived in less than a week, including items shipped from locations that I could have driven to and collected from within a couple of hours.
The only shipment I have contacted the shipper about in the past couple of years was last month, when the items had taken over sixty days and hadn’t yet arrived. I contacted the seller, they refunded me and put in an lost item investigation with the shipping company, then 3 days later it arrived and we had to go through a process of me repaying for the items again. Next time I’ll wait 3 months before worrying.
Holy crap Paul, that 5.1 HD mix is outstanding. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Mr Wilson. Its totally immersive. This is the first time I’ve heard this album, so I was going in fresh. On first listen, there aren’t any clear ‘pop hits’ ala Everybody Wants to Rule the World or Pale Shelter, but I found it to be very good straight through. I didn’t even think about skipping through any tracks because they were all listenable. I think after a few repeated listens, there will be some songs that stand out for me. The Tipping Point is as close to a single so far I would say. A good chorus always brings that out. Thanks for offering this up Paul!
Hi Paul, just wanted to say a big thank you to all at SDE and everyone involved with the Blu-Ray Audio disc. I was seriously impressed that mine arrived on the release day in as far west in Canada as you can get all nicely packed. Amazing job by you all, we’ll done and I hope more to come after this success. Cheers P.
Fun Fact! The Tipping Point is being released on 25.2.2022 – Songs From the Big Chair was released 25.2.1985 – Exactly 37 years earlier. Is this a coincidence or intentional by TFF?
Saw this cassette single today at my local record store in Seattle for ‘The Tipping Point/No Small Thing’. The O-card it comes in serves as a $2 off coupon for the new album on CD or vinyl once released. Have seen this done with CD singles in the past for albums by Sinead O’Connor, Iggy Pop and others. Would have liked to get a CD copy of these tracks instead of a cassette…
Although they’re not my cup of tea, I received notification that TFT are doing a Q&A at Rough Trade (London) on 21/2 I think it is.. Tickets on a first come first served basis as Ispeak…
It is definitely great to know projects like this are viable. Now I can kind of fantasise about getting 5.1 mixes of Elemental, Raoul, and Happy Ending (maybe Saturnine and Tomcats is a daydream too far), the unjustly neglected part of the Tears for Fears canon. It is also great to know that there is a community here ready to make this sort of thing happen. If everyone can be involved from the planning stage by putting their hands up, or yelling “take my money!”, then perhaps the sky’s the limit, and every patron of SDE can be rewarded by future projects. Regardless, Tears for Fears fans can count themselves pretty lucky, it seems.
I know Steven Wilson has spoken positively about …Happy Ending…, so he would probably be up for it. Also, it’s a very dense, layered record, and the stereo mastering (especially on the horrendous UK/Europe version) doesn’t do it justice.
What I would really love aside from any remixes would be more live material. I’ve burned some radio broadcasts on CD-Rs for personal use (including the fantastic 1996 Shepherd’s Bush concert), but the band must be sitting on mountains of well-recorded live shows from after the reunion. Secret World Live in Paris really doesn’t cut it.
Signed print now available on Recordstore UK as part of a bundle including CD, Black Vinyl & Green Vinyl for £60
As I’m a big fan of the site, Tears for Fears and blu-ray audio, this was a no brainer for me and I was lucky enough to order one. I’d have no problem personally with another run as I didn’t buy it for the exclusivity but having been on this site for a long time, I’m aware of previous complaints of additions to ltd runs.
Delighted for you Paul that this has paid off. You deserve some reward for the hard work on the site!
Thanks for this! Ordered one the day it was announced but didn’t have the chance to comment. I assumed I’d just play the 5.1 version through the sound bar on my TV, but then realized that the new MacBook Pro I have coming at the end of Feb. will have Dolby Atmos in the internal speakers and from what I’ve read online, it’s impressive. That pushed my decision to look for an external optical drive with BluRay rather than without. Looking forward to listening!
Laughable one seller with at least nine copies for sale at £69.00 a pop on eBay.
What went wrong for that person to purchase so many copies.
Its certainly limited now.
Nothing has gone wrong. I’ve already said anyone ordering stupid amounts of copies will see their order cancelled so the person trying to sell 9 copies will have zero copies. I’m going to close this comment section soon if it continues to consist of people moaning about ebay and not getting a copy of this release.
Yes I don’t blame you, I was wondering how a member could invest in the next venture.
I wouldn’t need to make a profit, just would be interesting to be part of the process.
All the ones I have looked at have only got 1 copy.
There is one seller who has numerous entries with one available and has already sold a few.
Unfortunately it is the way of the world.
I’m glad they have all sold on SdE and this has gone some way to proving the demand for high quality items
Thanks to Paul for committing to it, I presume there was a degree of risk and thankfully it worked out. Pity about the criticism of how it has gone.
The restricted numbers made me not hesitate with the purchase but weren’t the main reason. Any identical reprint would likely result in another deluge of negative comments and criticism.
As the saying goes “No good deed goes unpunished”, it’s a pity but true.
If this album is a hit, it would not surprise me a bit if some edition with these mixes turns up in some other territory like USA or Japan. Yes this is limited for the UK, but I am really not convinced that if there is a demand that this will never ever pop up again, it just does not work that way…. Even exclusive promo only 12” mixes eventually appear somewhere.
Can’t knock the role that eBay and discogs play in identifying potential profits for additional copies to be manufactured, not unlike the Song’s from the Big Chair deluxe box initial offering produced in 2014.
Another number was made available in 2018, which we as consumers rarely have that data but the label took notice and produced more.
I’ve been buying surround sound formats since the late 90’s and have had my share of paying more then original MSRP on many titles.
I wanted my collection to grow and have done well enough with pricing. (Bootleg and illegal copies are an issue that wouldn’t dissappear no matter how many Authentic copies manufactured)
I’m not a streamer because I live in a very rural area with poor internet service, regardless I still like to have something Physical for my hard earned cash.
I got good advice from a friend that said to pre-order, buy early and buy at least 2. That’s easy for me because I have 3 sons involved in surround sound also and I’ve gifted many titles instead of selling them on another site.
I now buy any Atmos offerings (pop, rock, and progressive) and my preferred format is Blu-Ray Pure Audio, kudos to all involved in keeping Physical Media in the market place.
Thanks to Paul, Steven Wilson and cant forget Marshall of AF for all the years of great releases.
Amazing success ! Congrats!
With such delays with vinyl LPs production, I think it’s a good way to show record labels there’s still a market for physical digital audio items (CD, DVD, BR) and it’s à project that can come to fruition pretty quickly.
Indeed the fact that it was limited to 2000 units made people rush to buy it but it’s not the only explanation. I guess TFF fans, collectors, fans of surround sound, fans of Steven Wilson mixes, people who wanted to support the site and this initiative in particular, etc. can also explain this successs.
Let’s hope there will be more in the future. So far, very few new albums are released as BR with Dolby Atmos or 5.1 mixes (unless it’s a live album).
I can’t even imagine the thought process of someone who bought this just because it was “limited” without wanting to listen to the contents. For me, and I suspect most others, the only thing the limited-ness of the offering affected was WHEN I would purchase it, not whether. So many music releases nowadays are “you snooze, you lose (or pay through the nose)” that, if you’re fortunate enough to catch it when it’s available, you don’t take chances when something you know you want to hear comes up for sale. This could have been limited to 1000, 2000, 20000, doesn’t matter, I would have bought it. And if Paul were to offer 2000 more of the exact same item, it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, because at the end of the day, I’m just grateful it exists and happy that Paul did whatever he did to get it made, fortunate that I was able to buy it when it was available, and CANNOT WAIT to listen to it.
(That said, maybe limiting orders to 1 or 2 might have been a good idea, instead of canceling obvious flippers after the fact. But that’s a minor quibble.)
Hope this is the first of many future similar offerings.
I’m convinced that one of the reasons this sold out so quickly is that this is a truly limited edition. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were many who don’t have a blu ray surround sound audio set up and still bought this for collectors purposes. I don’t do vinyl but I still buy limited edition colored releases of my favorite artists. There is definitely a draw in the limited edition aspect. If I miss out on the limited edition and really want it, I suck it up and buy it on Ebay or Discogs before it becomes completely unavailable or unaffordable. How many of the complainers here wrote a letter to Paul McCartney to print more spotted yellow or coke bottle III vinyls? How many here complain about releases being marked as limited edition are available seemingly forever? Missing out on a coveted release is painful but let’s honor the risk Paul took and encourage him to take another like this if the situation presents itself rather than complain.
This is not just a limited edition that you can compare to another edition on coloured vinyl. The audio that is offered on this blu-ray can’t be obtained by any other mean. In other words, if you haven’t managed to secure a copy, you will never ever get the chance to listen to the surround mix (please, point me at the release date of the atmos mix on a streaming service – good luck with that…).
I really don’t know why being able to listen to 5.1 surround music is and has always been such a struggle. The days when this will be as easy as listening to stereo recordings are yet to come…
That’s an interesting theory Kauwgompie. I would have bought it either way since I’m a avid fan of 5.1 surround mixes. Coldplay issued a 5.1 blu-ray of ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ a few years back, I don’t know how many copies were manufactured but it was mentioned on SDE https://superdeluxeedition.com/news/coldplays-a-head-full-of-dreams-to-be-issued-as-5-1-surround-blu-ray/
It sold out and has since obviously increased in value. I can’t ever remember it being sold as a limited edition so it didn’t sell out overnight. Considering Coldplay sell-out stadiums around the world, you would think a large number would be manufactured.
Jesus!! Do Coldplay sell out stadium around the world,,???
The thread about the Coldplay Blu-Ray on QuadraphonicQuad is an interesting reading. Apparently that was fraught with issues too, both the release as well as the mix – and the theory is that they only put it out in a limited quantity and without much fanfare so they could “get in” with the Grammy nominations for best surround mix. Goes to figure they actually didn’t win it.
Edit: As far as the mixing errors on the Coldplay disc go, here’s the discussion.
I wish people would stop trying to tell Paul how to do his job. This was a limited edition of 2000 which was clearly stated. It sold out in 24 hours because it was a limited edition. People bought it because it being a limited edition was a major part of the attraction. If I thought there was another run being made I would probably ask for a refund citing the trades description act. The fact is there were only 2000, the only people whinging are those that didn’t get it. It is the way of the world. You snooze you lose.
Agreed. Paul should get nothing but praise for this venture. Sorry for those that missed out this time but maybe they will get lucky next time. I checked the SDE website at just the right time and did get an order in. The following day I checked SDE just before the postings about the SOV signed print version and didnt check back for a couple of hours and missed out on that one. Just the way it goes sometime..
“If I thought there was another run being made I would probably ask for a refund citing the trades description act”.
Seriously? First world problems spring to mind…
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to release a second ‘unlimited’ version but without the 5.1 DTS-HD mix? That way fans who missed out would still get the ATMOS surround mix and those that bought the limited edition would get exactly that.
Other way around would be better for two reasons. 1 – more people probably have 5.1 or 7.1 setups than Atmos ones. 2 – what exactly is the point of having music above your head? Pure gimmickry.
What’s the point of having music above your head? Well the Beatles ‘Rooftop Concert’ in Atmos REALLY makes you feel as if you had been down amongst the crowds outside Apple for one example ;)
I’m not an expert but Atmos should “fold down” depending on the setup. I wonder how many people with no Atmos setups will compare 5.1 with Atmos on this disc…
That is what happens. The Yello Atmos disc sounded great on my previously non-Atmos set-up. And it will go to stereo if necessary.
#Metoo . . . missed out. Gutted. Whaaaah. Plewse, please, please . . . extended the run?
Paul,
Great initiative! I have missed this great opportunity, was too late.
I do not understand why the order is not increased by another 1.000 or more…. All the fixed costs are done (the mixing, the mastering, the production master). This is all available, pressing another 1.000 or more extra discs makes it only more profitable for you.. Production facilities are very flexible these days….
Regards,
Pedro
I’ve been wondering why there haven’t been many posts in other topics on SDE lately. Turns out, everybody was posting here instead! Seriously, though, congrats to Paul for this major exclusive to your store. Although I didn’t buy the blu-ray, I have your exclusive CD pre-ordered. Can’t wait to receive it!
How refreshing too to see ebay to start dealing with the scammers who have bulk bought to list not just this but the coloured vinyls and signed editions of the album as pre sales…seems a few are starting to get erased…
Are you sure this is happening? I don’t see what legal basis Ebay would have for doing this. Somebody selling something for more than they paid for it isn’t against the law. The only times I’ve seen Ebay pull listings is if there is some question as to whether counterfeit/bootleg.
Personally, the practice of reselling is a double edged sword. The degree of profiteering is sometimes annoying. However, If people didnt do this, then I wouldn’t have been able to order the US Version with the 7″ single. It’s a US only Target release with no shipping to the UK. The only way I could get this is via a third party.
Because one of the ebay rules is that you actually have to have the item you’re selling in your possession. What if you sell “your” second copy of some limited edition thing at a grossly inflated price before you’ve received it yourself and then it never shows up?
>>Because one of the ebay rules is that you actually have to have the item you’re selling in your possession<<
This isn’t actually correct. You can advertise presales without having the item in your possession. If you read the “Ebay Presales Policy” it gives the detail. Essentially though, it does state that you must be able to post within 30 days of the advance sale, and as the release date of TFF is 25th Feb – then current listings are not in compliance. Nothing to stop the listings appearing again though in a week or so time.
Absolutely agree that it would be highly foolish to sell anything not in your possession for the reasons you state.
Ha ha, 50.000 hunter vs 2.000 rabbits … ridiculous, sorry
Gets a thumbs up from me.
It would appear to me that most of the 2000 lucky hunters who bagged themselves a bunny are militant vegans who only killed Thumper to stop the other 48,000 being able to have something to eat. Sure I read a comment here the other day by someone who bought a box set a decade ago and hasn’t got around to listening to it yet. Laughable.
With respect, that is utter bollocks. I bought it because I love TFF and I have a surround set-up. The item I have purchased (just the one, mind) will be played and enjoyed in glorious 5.1. Tarring every buyer with the same scalpel is out of order. Quite frankly, I have better things to do with my time and money than buy something I don’t want or need just to piss you off. Everyone needs to take a breath and get a grip. There were 2000 units. Now there are none. Get over it!
The facts are that virtually everyone bought ONE COPY. I know, I can see the orders. A tiny minority didn’t and we’ll deal with that, appropriately.
So for those that ordered multiple copies and have their orders cancelled, will those go back to the store and announced for sale later? Unfortunately, I missed the initial run because I was working with patients and unable to check email in time to see the announcement. Glad they sold just sad I missed out.
Yes. Restocks will be strictly limited to one per customer.
Glad to be part of those lucky 2000. Can’t wait for this album…first post ever, thank you for this Mr. Sinclair!
Hi Paul:
Please consider making more (if possible). Missed this and the email notification. I guess there is always ebay. :-(
Thank you.
Please consider a Kickstarter style pre-order system for releases like this. It needn’t run too long, maybe a couple of weeks, just so people who happened to blink the day it drops out of the blue have a chance to get hold of one. Then you can better assess the demand for such products. It’s not a perfect system, but seems a way to make more people happier than not, overall.
Not a bad idea. I was lucky and got one ordered but I can understand the frustration if you don’t happen to have seen the announcement. I would certainly order and pay up front for something like this.
This is actually a really good idea.
I can see problems with this idea, though. There are, presumably, a minimum number of discs that need to be sold in order to make it financially worthwhile. That’s how Kickstarter works of course, where a “target” is set and if it isn’t reached then the project doesn’t go ahead.
So let’s say that the minimum run is 2,000 as it was here, and the sign up period was a fortnight. Now, I’m not suggesting that TFF (in this case) couldn’t have sold more than 2,000 copies of the limited edition BluRay, but the question is… how many more? And more importantly, how many of these sales came about precisely because of the limited nature of the disc?
My worry would be that the minute you say “We will make as many of these as we need to based on orders received” then the appeal disappears for some collectors. It’s not a disc with unreleased material on, remember. The main draw is the Atmos (and 5.1) remix, and I suspect that there are some people who have bought this who don’t even have a surround sound system but were happy to have it anyway just because of the rarity. Take away the rarity and all they’re really left holding is a regular album.
If I’ve got that right, and it’s only a theory of course, what you’d end up with is a situation where at the end of the two weeks the target is not met and nobody gets an album. Worse still the people concerned look at the outcome and assume there’s insufficient demand for this type of project, and refuse to give it or any others the green light in future. Whereas what they see now is a HUGE success, that can hopefully be repeated with other albums.
So yes, a few people are denied a copy. But that’s better than 2,000 people not getting one.
Yes, I agree that is definitely a possible no win scenario. I would be very curious to know how much of the appeal of such releases is merely exclusivity as opposed to the content. But that’s the joy/perversity of collecting things in general, I guess. From the artist’s point of view, I imagine the primary goal is to satisfy fans by making content available for listening pleasure, whereas providing collectables would be secondary to this purpose.
One thing I do like about a pre-order system with an open production run is that it can transfer entrepreneurial risk. If a savvy reseller perceives a higher long term demand for such a product, they can take a punt and lay down the money for 10 or 20 or 100 or whatever. While sitting on excess stock may not be financially viable for the product creator, other sellers may reason they could shift 10 units over several years at x profit and be quite happy.
As a general comment side note, this project is a reminder of where I think the greatest appeal of repackaging music lies – in surround sound mixes. No secondary aspect of recorded music consumption (holding the record, buying the box set, listening to remixes, etc.) can ever scale the heights of listening to the original music, whether the peak experience is the first listen or the fiftieth. The only thing that comes close, in my opinion, is hearing the same music aurally reinvented. Multi-tracked pop/rock music happens to be perfect for this, to varying degrees. Done well, it is damn near transcendent. As an example, the 5.1 mix of Queen’s A Night at the Opera is arguably the definitive way to hear this meticulously layered music. How, after all, could merely the stereo spectrum do Queen’s music justice! [Queen have tragically neglected to give their other albums, aside from The Game, the same treatment.]
Any initiative to make more music available in quality surround mixes should be applauded, especially in accessible formats like DTS HD 5.1 on Blu-ray for dedicated fans. [Now, Mr. McCartney, I know you hate Press to Play, but have you ever thought what a good 5.1 mix might do for it? :-)]
Came back today to see if the BR is sold out. Yes it is!
Well done Paul! And huge thanks to the band, Steven Wilson and everyone involved in this stand alone blu-ray. I jumped on it immediately so I’m really lucky to be one of the few.
I think it would make really great business to have these stand-alone pure audio discs for the vast majority of the big box sets that come out. Record companies have already invested in making the surround and hi-rez versions that seem to be treated like an afterthought in the big box sets and not everyone has the money or shelf space to buy overblown mega boxes but would really like the surround version. I’m one of these people. I know some bands do this such as Mr Wilson and Marillion etc already but there’s obviously a good size market as proven by this TFF disc not to mention the awesome affordable Yes reissue series and XTC’s box sets on one disc!!! And Marillion and Jethro Tull’s affordable box sets.
I got the stand-alone Blu-ray of Songs From The Big Chair (that came with a download card for a Hi-Rez stereo file too! Hint Hint) and Chris Squire’s Fish Out Of Water, no download with that one though. I can think of loads of other surround discs I’d have bought in stand-alone form over the lifetime of SDE that I’d love to have but can’t afford such as:
The Beatles-Abbey Road, Let It Be, Sgt Peppers, The White Album etc
Roxy Music- Roxy Music
Tears For Fears-Sowing The Seeds Of Love, The Hurting (was released on Pure Audio Disc but only stereo, missing master tapes so no 5.1 unfortunately)
Tangerine Dream-Phaedra etc
I could go on and on, they’re all there waiting for us to buy them if they were done like this TFF one. The market is there but the emphasis is on affordable, Hi-Rez stereo, 5.1, Atmos mixes without all the other tat (marbles, posters with multiple folds that ruin them, scarves, coasters, demo after demo that you listen to once out of curiosity and never bother with again because a demo is exactly what a demo is) and that way we can be Holding The Music In Our Hands and have the highest quality versions of our favourite music in one simple format. I love a good box set but reality is I’d be broke as would my shelves if I bought everything I actually wanted.
Thanks Paul for the awesome website and for making it happen!
I don’t think the master tapes for The Hurting were missing. At the time, even selling a 3CD+DVD box set seemed like a daunting prospect, so nobody ever thought of doing a 5.1 mix!
Now sold out ! Though as someone already pointed out sound of vinyl are notoriously bad at ‘finding’ sold out stock
Ordered!
Came here to inform about Signed Print version at SOV but well beaten to it by a few other SDE members. At time of this comment (2.40pm 13.1.22) just over 200 copies left. If you have missed out, keep checking back as SOV have a habit of finding more copies (thinking of The Hurting White Vinyl) to list for sale. Col.
Just sold out. That took just over 2 hours. They’ve had a good two days. Wonder what they’ll be offering tomorrow? Cassettes anybody?
Cassette is already listed in the TFF online store.
There’s currently 239 left of the signed print and green vinyl combo . You can also get 10% off with this code: SOV10PERCENTOFF
Good luck !
Code is for 1st time purchase only. It is far away from being my first purchase from SOV – LOL
Signed print TFF green vinyl at Sound Of Vinyl. They’re going very quickly. No surprises there then. https://thesoundofvinyl.com/*/*/The-Tipping-Point-Exclusive-Signed-Print-Green-Vinyl/7AIG0000000?utm_campaign=TheSoundofVinylWeek2TFFUKonlysigned130122&utm_content=UMGUK32867-862617&utm_medium=Email&utm_source=Email
They’ve sold 400 in half an hour which isn’t bad going ! *’UK only’ though for anyone considering it
Bought one hopefully Van Morrison isn’t offering advice how to avoid arm strain!. These are certainly going quick expect to see 500 of them on an auction site at £99.99 in a few weeks!. Or by the end of this afternoon!.
You can see the signed prints in this photo tweeted by Curt
7 Sharpies – he was well prepared !
Nicely spotted!
What did it start on – the usual 900 for SOV?
Great to- sadly not at the U.S. store and they won’t let you order from the U.S. :(
The sound of vinyl has the LP with a signed art card for sale now.
Not to derail the thread, but Sound Of Vinyl have the green vinyl with a signed print available at the moment.
Around 600 or so left when I last looked if anyone is interested.
They’ve sold another 250 in 17 minutes. Only 350 left.
SOV have just put up 800 copies of the Green vinyl LP- with signed art print, if anyone missed signed version when it first appeared. The boys must have tired hands signing all those art prints !
Sold out. But you can still get the green vinyl without the print.

Selling out of print physical music on Ebay works great for people like me who sometimes miss out on stuff because I’m either asleep at the wheel or live on the other side of the world where the item was released. I’m trying to buy all the Carnaby 9 Rolling Stones red vinyls. I couldn’t physically buy the product because I don’t live in London but thanks to the eBay flippers, I now own quite a bunch of them. If they were $30, they wouldn’t be available on eBay long because they only printed 1000 copies of selected Stones albums. It’s only because they are $100 or more that I can get my hands on them. Only a few people will want to spend that money on an album hence they are available on EBay for an extended time. It’s the same for the last seat on a flight. It goes for an insane amount of money and people complain but it’s precisely because of the insane amount of money that the seat is still available and you CAN go if you need to.
This is such a bizarre take. By bulk buying limited items with the intention of selling for profit, you are taking those numbers from the already limited amount and away from the buyers who got there 2 minutes too late, and then they have no option but to buy from the scalper.
Agreed, the real fans only buy one copy for themselves. There has been success on limiting to one purchase only. I know the scalpers have multiple accounts, but at least it slows them down for the real fans can get a look in.
Some real fans have bought two copies for a friend or something like that. I think that’s OK too…
I agree with you. I think doing this by folks may be a great business opportunity but it’s rather scummy for fans.
Not sure you are getting my point. By no means do I say sell the inventory to scalpers. My point is, if scalpers didn’t exist I would not be able to buy certain releases. Do I like it that I then end up paying 3x the price? No. Do I like it that I can at least get a copy? Yes.
What if the scalpers are the reason that you can’t get your hands on a copy in the first place? Surely that is the point?
Scalpers are not the reason I cannot get my hands on the Carnaby 9 vinyls. In fact they are the reason I CAN buy them being in NYC. In most cases they are also not the reason people here missed out on the TFF Blu Ray. Sure, maybe 50 out of the 2000 will sell them for a profit but had they been sold to the actual endusers, number 51 and up would still not have a TFF Blu Ray and be complaining here.
Not a release that interests me personally, but averaging a selling rate of more than one unit per minute over a 24 hour period is very impressive indeed! It’s very unfair of those who missed out to criticise what I think is a fabulous initiative by all involved, particularly Paul Sinclair. I wouldn’t be surprised if a SDE Records label / imprint label springs up in the not too distant future!
I’m not criticizing him or the initiative but some of us work and those of us in healthcare particularly now have a little less time on our hands. A second limited run would be appreciated.
Break the Man is great, I’ve those synths and the guitar chords, I’m getting Pale Shelter meets Advice for the Young At Heart vibes, 2 great songs.
There’s no point in losing sleep having not got one – Paul took a risk that paid off for him and good for him I say!. I’ve missed out many times here and on other sites due to being hesitant – take for example the Mode box which was well publicised on SDE, I wanted that but didn’t buy immediately expecting there to another run and there wasn’t, Same as the Genesis SACD box sets of 2007 which sold in the UK for £100 approx, those also have never had a re issue to my eternal annoyance and regret but that’s the way of the World. if you spend time thinking or miss out due to not being on mailing lists you probably will be unlucky. If Paul had of done 5,000 then quite possibly 3,000 will be sat on his shelves for 6 months taking up valuable space leading to eventual discounts. So 2,000 is a good number. Paul no doubt understands how these things work more than I do and made a calculated decision that paid off.
I really don’t understand why people complain about the fact that there are only 2000 copies.
That’s part of the game. I missed a lot of cds, DVDs or Blu-rays that were interesting to me.
so what. I won’t cry about that.
Serious question: is there no one involved in this venture who thinks that selling 2000 of these in a single day might be a good reason to make some more?
If there were a lot more available, it may only have sold a 1000.
Agreed. If they’d pressed up 10000 there wouldn’t have been the same imperative to purchase so quickly, and they might have been stuck with a large inventory. But maybe in retrospect they could have stretched to 2500 :)
The German label Earmusic has been doing quite a lot of limited CD releases of e.g. Marillion live albums and Mark Kelly’s solo project Marathon, and they typically limited these to 5000 (they are numbered). So, much more niche than TFF (both the band and the label), and still 2.5 as many units. As far as I know, most of these have sold out by now – not within a day, but within three years.
(Edit: The box set they made for the new album An Hour Before It’s Dark is limited to 1000 units, however there is nothing exclusive about it in terms of music content.)
So you two are saying that it only sold out because there were just 2000 available and they therefore had to be snapped up immediately by collectors? LOL.
The fact that, after looking through the comments, quite a few of said collectors don’t even have any means of playing the disc makes me laugh even louder!
This is cool you were able to do this, and I have complete respect and some awe you were able to pull this off, but to be honest I don’t think Tear’s For Fears management have very much vision if this is the best they can market their product, this is about as bad as Bowie’s “Idiotic Live Adventures”. 2000 units for a new album from a band of this stature really sells them short and leaves a lot of easy money on the table. These are the kinds of numbers one would expect from a completely forgotten act that had lost all artistic credibility on the way and are left on a grey market reissue/repackage indie label. I don’t think Apple Music or Tidal is really the marketplace for most fans that would buy this album, so no physical product really seems like a waste.
Sting sold about 4k of his new album on ALL FORMATS in the pre-order period in the UK. So HALF of that quantity for Tears For Fears on an extremely niche format is pretty good going and there is no evidence to suggest that that figure is way off. The only people saying that are those that missed out!
You’re right, Paul. It was a bet. I’m really surprised that it sold out so quickly. Honestly, 2.000 copies of an audio blu-ray sold in 24 hours… well, it’s a huge achievement. Congratulations !
Actually thats amazing, especially all sold through your shop only. Sting was everywhere.
If you assume that 1/10 of those people are serious fans/collectors who would buy a blu-ray and then consider that there are at least 10 times as many fans worldwide as in the UK (just look at what crowds this band draws in many countries, and at the amount of interaction their postings on social media get), the number already doubles.
You can probably verify this once you prepare the preorders. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of them are not going to the UK.
If this had gotten a regular release, available worldwide, it would be cheaper and I wouldn’t have to worry about f***ing VAT either – something I personally have not dealt with before – so there are reasons to gripe about how this went down (while still being happy that it went down at all).
Paying a few pounds more isn’t a consideration to worry about when the alternative is, that without SDE’s initiative, this product didn’t exist at all?
I’ve also preordered the exclusive CD. Both aren’t cheap in and of themselves. Many postal services also require an extra payment for dealing with the taxes (DHL apparently wants 6€ per package), so if I don’t get this sorted out (there is a new process where one can announce an import to the authorities, but I’ve no real idea how it works), I might have to pay no less than an additional 24€ total, which is how much the exclusive CD costs without VAT. That’s arguably beyond just “a few pounds more”.
I’m happy to support this endeavour but can’t help feeling it could’ve been handled much better. That said, I don’t see Paul as the culprit here, but rather Concord. It seems they spent so much time and thought on vinyl that the digital formats are an afterthought.
Fair enough, and well explained.
In the same fashion, if I look at an artists shop, and it’s USA only, I rarely proceed. We are fortunate in the UK, where most of the artists I grew up with are based here, so I suspect we have the best chance to purchase with reasonable postage / pricing.
Well, if this is the new Tears For Fears outlet store, perhaps you can talk them into releasing maxi singles, Just like the good old days. That would be fun. It is already established it will sell out at least 2000 copies in a day.
Count me in.
Mmm yes, and so glad I was lucky! The mix is really nice, and we’re fortunate it exists, domo arigato gozaimashita. I’m really looking forward to the tour stop at The Forum with some friends. What I wonder for something that sells out so fast is why don’t you do a Marillion-ish “pre-order and pay by xxx date” system? It’s really frustrating to miss out on a title and then they are $296.40 on eBay etc. I’m sure some buyers are just flippers trying to profit, but I’d *think* the vast bulk are fans that want the surround and/or a collectible. By the way my order came pretty quickly to the USA, kudos!
The simple answer is there was no time to do that. We had to go to manufacturing and pick a number, which we were locked into. We didn’t have the luxury of ‘let’s see what demand is like over the next few weeks’.
I’ve managed to secure a copy of the blu-ray. I have a question regarding the number of discs sold. I’d always assumed it was an expensive process to remix an album into surround and that is why many artists don’t do it. If 2,000 units are enough to recoup the cost of creating a surround mix then cost can’t be the reason we have so few surround mixes.
The Atmos mix will also be on streaming, so it’s not entirely limited to this release. Quite a few artists (Coldplay, Abba) are releasing Atmos mixes on streaming only, with no physical copy to speak of.
Also, I’m sure the process was far cheaper than doing Big Chair or Seeds of Love, since everything was ready in the digital domain – no archive trawling and tape baking needed!
Hey off social media for a day or so and…this came out. Paul there needs to be more of these manufactured. 2000 worldwide is way too small. Maybe another 1500.
My guess is that scalpers bought the bulk of these and they are marking them up on eBay. I’m sad I missed out.
Your guess is wrong. Most people bought 1 copy
Only 2000 copies? Should have produced 5x that. I am a few hours late and it’s “out of stock”. These days the only music I buy is physical surround formats.
It’s easy to say “should have produced 5x that” when you are not taking the financial risk to go ahead with this initiative.
That’s right!
Your shed would have a load of boxes with about 7862 copy’s in them!!
If you ever get round to doing a S.D.E roadshow you’d probably have a merchandise stall with a bargain bucket full of them £5 a pop!! You did the right thing!!
What do you mean “out of stock” ? Already ? :o
Congratulations on the sell out.
If you could print both the exclusive cd and this blu-ray surround version, and sell more of them, then go for it. It’s a shame not to maximise both releases, make money and satisfy demand. The upside far outweighs the negativity that’d ensue over exclusivity. Whilst it’s nice to own limited items, I’ve never been bothered when others get the opportunity to own those items.
Ultimately it’s great to see physical items get the attention they deserve. They are always going to be desired by enough people the wrong side of fifty, to make it worthwhile for companies to keep on releasing them.
I know Steven would love to ‘spatially mix’ Kate Bush, well who wouldn’t; so if I had to list a preference of priority, it would be:
Hounds Of Love
Aerial
The Dreaming
50 Words For Snow
The Kick Inside
Never For Ever
The Sensual World
Director’s Cut
The Red Shoes
Lionheart
I’d also love for Roger Water’s Is The Life We Really Want to be released in surround sound.
Many thanks Paul (and to all involved), this is awesome news! I do appreciate the effort that must be involved in bringing a release like this to fruition…and the inevitable ricochets!
Could I ask a question?, probably like a lot of folks I don’t have the room to have 6 speakers or own an Atmos amplifier. I do have a Digital Audio Converter that converts all high resolution formats will this disc play in Stereo to 24/96 or 24/192 resolution. Hopefully one day I’ll be able to hear the multi channel mixes but bought yesterday in the hope that stereo 24/96 is achieved via the fold down ( whatever one of those is !!). Thanks.
The Dolby Atmos should ‘fold down’ into stereo. It will be 48/24 though.
All 2000 sold now???
Yes
CONGRATS! That gives hope to future projects like this! Maybe a 5.1 mix of Simple Minds Street Fighting Years or any other of the albums (I would hope for Big Music and especially Black and White 050505 which would be haunting, I guess, and Walk Between Worlds, which would profit from a more spacious mix. But there are MANY others as well. Another Mark Knopfler Album, Clannad, maybe? I would so wish for a Kate Bush album in surround (TD, HOL, TSW, TRS, Aerial, 50 Words) but that will probably remain a pipe dream forever. Again, congrats and I hope it was worthwile for everyone!
It was surprising that Street Fighting Years didn’t include a 5.1 mix after the previous three Simple Minds releases. I don’t know how it affected sales but considering it contained ‘Belfast Child’ I thought it was going to be a definite 5.1 reissue. It was also a pity ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ never got the 5.1 treatment and added as a bonus to ‘Once Upon A Time’.
I wouldn’t mind hearing the earlier Simple Minds albums in 5.1 of the best of the early years.
As for Kate Bush, I listened to Steven Wilson’s interview where he mentions that unfortunately, Kate isn’t interested in having her music remixed to 5.1.
Congratulations on the initiative. We, readers of SDE, know the importance of supporting your hard work, Paul.
Unfortunately I was too late and this Blu-ray is now sold out. Is there a chance for a repress?
Paul, the following eBay user has 3 copies for sale on eBay at £89.99, master-vinyl-uk this is a bit unfair to any fans who may have missed out because of these 3 copies.
Only 2 left now!
Thankfully the seller’s address is listed on the site and Paul can draw conclusions…
It’s actually contravenes Ebay’s policies to resell pre-sale items. Blood Records does not honour orders if they can trace them to ebay scalpers.
For those who didn’t get a copy don’t despair, they are already available at a heavily marked up price from you know where.
Paul, not sure what you or anyone can do to prevent flippers from benefiting at the expense of the true fan. Perhaps a second run?
This is where we get into dodgy territory (see Neil Young), so I do not think there will be any second run. What I will say is that there is likely to be 20-25 copies available around the time of release. No guarantees but it’s always prudent to hold some back. And also any blatant orders of – for example – 10 copies will get cancelled, so that will put more in the pot.
Better only max. One or two per person, Cancel all other.. who needs 3 or 10 or more disc, except ebayers…
I was not interested in this so no personal axe to grind but strictly limited stuff like this that was always going to sell out would be better at 1 per customer/address.
Fantastic exclusive for you Paul and a high water mark for the SDE Shop.
Hmm is that true also for the limited CD with the extra tracks? (hoping)
Thanks Paul for that, and hopefully more.
As the “Sold out” appears on the sde-shop, the first showed up on ebay. Unbelievable!!! And what a price..
Wow sold out in a day. Well done Paul. This tops about everything you have done before. I hope this means more of these are going to pop up in the future. No pressure on you, I mean that bands and record labels open their eyes to the untapped potential (and $$). I cannot wait to sit in my living room and listen to this.
Can’t thank you (and the band & the label) enough for this.
I’m a participant in an online surround-sound forum and you blew it up yesterday!
Genius.
More please!
The online surround sound forum sounds interesting, have you a link please?
Pending Paul’s approval :-)
https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/TabbedPollChart.htm
Cheers
Luckily, I bought one yesterday. Hard to believe that a popular band wouldn’t release this in a more thought out approach, like the Marillion or Jethro Tull sets. Not to mention, limiting this to only 2,000 pressings, which we all knew would sell out quickly. Still, very grateful to support the cause and appreciate all the efforts in making this a reality. Hopefully, the comments and fast sell out will inspire future surround releases. Thanks Paul!
“Limiting this to only 2,000 pressings, which we all knew would sell out quickly. “ – easy to say when you aren’t putting in any of the investment & Paul may have ended up with 5000 unsold copies sitting in his garage. Maybe next time you can help Paul out & stump up all of the cash yourself up-front to produce an extra 10,000 units & take the hit yourself if they don’t sell !
Hi Paul,
There’s probably a market for the “already issued on an expensive box set” stand alone blu-ray disc. The most recent one that springs to mind is Destroyer by Kiss. The 4CD+blu-ray retailed at $200, yes it’s not a mis-print $200 plus a lot of tat (memorabilia).
I’d love to hear Steven Wilson’s Atmos surround mix but not going to spend that kind of money, I’m sure there’s enough die hard Kiss fans out there who have the money to burn to buy the deluxe box set.
To be fair, we are not comparing apples to apples: Kiss is a business and not a band anymore. Simmons and Stanley are capitalizing on their fame and milking it for all it has got. There are several very over priced box sets out there (GnR, Queen amongst others) that have questionable value (in my opinion).
TFF is not in that league and this offering, for a mere £22, offers a significantly improved sonic offering and not memorabilia that don’t add to music enjoyment. Not saying that that couldn’t happen but this builds/adds to what’s previously offered.
Lastly, I think the Kiss box set is a true “SDE” whereas this is a different single disc format with two separate mixes.
Just my 2c.
I was one of the “die hard Kiss fans” that purchased the Destroyer SDE. For me it ended up costing over NZ$300 by the time it arrived. If they offered the blu-ray separately at a lower price I wouldn’t be happy, as that was pretty much my only reason for spending so much money on the SDE. I’m crossing my fingers that this will never see a repress or reduction in price, much like the vinyl version of Sonic Boom (which I did not manage to get). No doubt there will be a 50th anniversary SDE of Destroyer including something that did not make it into the 45th one.
I can understand”If they offered the blu-ray separately at a lower price I wouldn’t be happy, as that was pretty much my only reason for spending so much money on the SDE” AFTER the fact.
BUT I bet if it had been available in the first place you would have just bought the Blu-ray, correct? I love Alan “surround is the furthest thing from my mind” Parsons or whoever is responsible for his Blu-ray only releases at decent prices. And Steven Wilson, bless you! I buy ALL his stuff, haven’t even heard most of it, just because the price is so reasonable for surround. Well, except the new Porcupine Tree so far, that 3-disc is more expensive (maybe because now there’s 3 guys?!? ha ha), hoping for a standalone box.
Ordered, and looking forward to listening to the SW mix.
Can I just second the desire for a blu-ray audio of The Hurting.
Well to be fair, there is
a blu ray audio of “The Hurting”, I know for sûre because I own it. But it is indeed high res stereo only..
Immediately ordered! Blu-ray audio still lives…thanks Paul for this opportunity to add to my collection. And even though Roland or Curt or Steven can’t sign, YOU may if so desired! ; )
Love the idea of this. I’ve not got a system yet. Could you hook a blu ray player up to a Sonos Beam 2 (with atmos) and play this? Or is it better to save up for a full speaker set?
I *think* what you are describing would work… but you can’t beat the full speaker set-up (although I realise that’s not always practical).
Ordered!
Although a Hires Stereo Track would have been great too :)
Ofcourse this was an instant order for me to have the album in super 5.1 surround
but I also really would like to know (and I see this has been asked before by fpas)
when releasing a SDE exclusive cd with the 3 extra bonustracks, why not also
release the SDE exclusive bluray-audio with these bonustracks?
There wasn’t much time to get this together so schedules/deadlines dictated album only.
okay, too bad. would have been the perfect bluray :-)
Good work Paul, now I look forward to the SuperDeluxe box set featuring the original abandoned album, The Tipping Point radio edit, etc etc. Joke of course! I’ve already ordered the 3 bonus tracks edition from your store, the signed Amazon CD, and the green vinyl, I need to draw the line somewhere!
A CD single with the “Tipping Point” edit and the RSD covers from 2014 would be fine with me…
Joined just now and ordered, thanks. Atmos gives me life. Tough 18 months for me with so much physical pain, music helps as a diversion. Sick of hearing nonsense, I just want to LISTEN TO MUSIC and live. The more Atmos BDA the better. Gracias.
PS Of course I’ve ordered one! Thanks
What a great initiative, Paul. I hope it is successful enough to justify future releases. I’m sure you would be overwhelmed with wish lists! In the meantime, although I don’t have a home cinema set up, and wouldn’t get one past ‘the authorities’, I will definitely put forward the case for an Atmos soundbar this year.
I have ordered this but I hope it will sound Ok on a 2 channel setup. This is just my preference, I have no interest in surround music. Blu ray audio discs are still released today but they tend to crop up in expensive box sets. I do wish sacd and dvd audio caught on more as well. In these times of hi res audio I think it would give a boost to physical formats by releasing a cd and dvd set, with the dvd containing a 96/24 stereo track and surround mixes for those that want it. It doesn’t need to be on a more expensive blu ray, all blu ray players will play a dvd (and CD). Yes I know this has been done in the past with REM for example, but these were dvd-audio discs and released when people were content with rubbish mp3 files.
Gary, I hope your player folds the multichannel down to 2 channel, though it won’t be the same as the provided stereo recordings as your player will be making the decisions.
I find surround fascinating – it feels like I am listening to an album for the first time again. And Atmos is an additional step that makes music sound like you are sitting among the musicians.
I loved DVD-A and SACD even more (no need to turn on the TV) but a DVD-V has data limitations. You can’t fit a 96/24 stereo and a full LPCM 96/24 surround mix on a DVD-V. I personally love a blu-ray to get as much full resolution material as possible with menus that don’t look blurry.
£22 for a blu-ray is less than what a single vinyl record sells for and you can get so much more out of a blu-ray. I would like to see albums sold with CD+DVD versions with 96/24 stereo on a DVD or CD+Blu-ray with 96/24 stereo and surround versions if created. But that isn’t going to despite all albums now being archived digitally in the equivalent of 96/24 DSD files.
This should better be *really* good, because it is by far the largest amount of money I ever spent on one single blu-ray release (including shipment and import fees) in a collection of over 4.000 items. But then again: It is remixed by Steven Wilson, so what could possibly go wrong? And please don’t tell me that noone forced me to buy this – Paul had all the good reasons on his side..
Ordered and am excited for a future of more Blu-Ray Pure Audio titles, really loved the Format when it was introduced.
I didn’t buy too many of the 2.0 releases though, hopefully things are going to be managed better.
I know that a Blu-Ray Pure Audio Set of many artists top albums would sell out. Aerosmiths big 3 would be awesome in Atmos regardless of the engineer mixing them.
I barely got to the third paragraph and then hit the button to purchase before coming back to read the rest of the article and the (already) ~150 comments. There’s no dilly dallying on this one. It’s gonna go fast.
Oh, and Paul, put me down for the pre-order of The Hurting in 5.1/Atmos also ;)
I was only think about High Fidelity Pure Audio the other day and wondering whatever happened to it. Do they still make them with any regularity? I only ever nabbed one, Nina Simone’s I Put A Spell On You. The last title I remember seeing in this format was that Grace Jones Disco box.
The logo, I think, hasn’t been used since 2016, but artists like The Alan Parsons Project, Yello, Marillion (the upcoming album) and obviously Steven Wilson have released stand-alone audio blu-rays.
I guess some of those wouldn’t be allowed to be classified as HFPA because they contain some video material too – which I think was one of the reasons that format eventually died, because that was simply a stupid restriction.
Those “rules” were very arbitrary – they broke them all the time!
Thanks. I remember that interview you posted (which I also linked below) and how lukewarm I felt about the format, partially because of reading that. But a lot of those discs were just hi-res versions of albums already well known… not brand new music in surround! This one definitely delivers in terms of content.
Ordered!
Thanks Paul!
I posted the news on the QuadraphonicQuad website as soon as it was available, and it’s led to a lot of positive posts and preorders from the members!
My hope is that the next TFF release will be a 30th anniversary box set for “Elemental” next year, which will of course contain 5.1 & Dolby Atmos mixes from Steven Wilson on Blu-Ray.
Thanks for sharing!
I shared on several sites – and I know a couple of people on a Genesis forum and on Tumblr ordered it after my alert!
Thank you
Pretty cool and I’m ordering my copy now. Would be very cool with a video “booklet” track listing with credits for producer, engineers, musicians, studios, song lyrics, and the music/promo videos. Also the 3 CD bonus tracks should have been included here too even if only in simple 2.0 sound. Maybe I’ve just described the future SDE. Is there a booklet in this BR edition that one would consider similar to CD booklet?
If they had put videos on it, Universal wouldn’t allow to call it a ‘Pure Audio’ blu-ray. See here: https://superdeluxeedition.com/interview/industry-spotlight-pure-audio-boss-on-plans-for-the-blu-ray-format/
Was able to place an order just now no issues.
Apparently I missed all the shopify fuss as I only just now saw the email.
Excellent Paul – thanks for this. I have just ordered, and it creates a nice package together with the deluxe CD and green vinyl previously ordered here! Cant wait for this album from one of my favourite ever bands!
Technical issues from earlier all resolved. Pre-orders should work via the ‘buy button’ or via the SDE shop, directly. Thanks.
thank you very much for making this release a possibility :) I have put in my order and I hope more artists will collaborate with SDE in a similar fashion in the near future.
Finally !! Got mine as well…had to wait untill shopify had solved their issues but got the limited edition bluray in the end…can’t wait to hear it and looking forward for more exclusive goodies from SDE. Thanks from Italy :)
Can someone tell me what the big attraction is about having Steven Wilson remix stuff?
He’s just really good at this stuff & it seems his select mixes are becoming collectible…on top of his own work, both solo & Porcupine Tree…also with his input, it gives each mix “Marquee Value”…my take on things…
He has created many 5.1 surround mixes over the last 10 years. If you’ve heard any of his work, you’ll know the surround mix will be quite immersive with good use of the rear speakers.
It’s not to say other producers 5.1 mixes haven’t been good, I have many non-Steven Wilson 5.1 mixes that I’ve enjoyed listening to but Steven has created so many 5.1 mixes in recent years that he has created a market for himself and has been the go to guy for many artists.
Steven Wilson is so good at creating 5.1 mixes, I’ve bought albums he’s done just because of his name being on the sleeve – he’s that consistent.
I’d strongly recommend (as I am sure others have in the comments) checking out his other TFF 5.1 mixes for SFTBC and Seeds Of Love – and his work with XTC’s back catalogue is stunning!
Hi Michael,
if you’re not into surround mixes you can check out some “remix stuff” of his on streaming providers as his stereo remixes of e.g. records by Jethro Tull or Gentle Giant are available there as well.
If you’re also not into streaming (after all this is a blog for people who love to hold the music in their hands) you can buy e.g. his work for Jethro Tull not only in box sets but also as standard cd releases…
Oh, I am big on surround sound, and have a pretty decent home cinema setup. I already have a couple of Wilson’s remixes, in the Vienna stereo and 5.1 mixes from last year’s boxset. But I’m only asking because it seems “remixed by Steven Wilson” seems to draw a gasp and set people’s pulses racing. Personally, I was only aware of the name from the Ultravox box. I had heard of Porcupine Tree because of Richard Barbieri’s association, but thats about it.
“Draw a gasp” might be a bit strong but his mixing work certainly gets more applause than boos…
From you mentioning his work for Ultravox and with Richard Barbieri (former member of Japan) i suppose you’re more into synth pop than prog rock so if you don’t know them already you might check out No-Man where Wilson as a multi instrumentalist together with singer Tim Bowness made some beautiful records.
I guess it’s sold out now? Somebody said they got a “not found”.
It’s not sold out, the Shopify platform has had an outage that is impacting other sites too. That’s why the ‘buy button’ has disappeared and it’s currently impossible to go through the checkout process on the SDE shop. However, we are hoping this will be fixed soon, although there is no ETA right now.
Hopefully it will still be available tomorrow… I just saw the email but having the same problem on the shop website…Can’t get signed in, can’t get anything working
Ordered! Very glad you’re doing this and I’m excited to hear it. Hopeful you’ll get to do more of these.
Well done Paul, you’ve just make me do my very first SDE purchase. I see I’m not the only one, it proves there is a real interest in physical formats for surround mixes. Anyway, thanks for championing Pure Audio ! Speaking of surround, one release spring to mind. If they exist, the Ronald Prent 5.1 mixes of Street Fighting Years should definitely be issued on stand alone bluray. Universal, if you read me …
A 5.1 mix Street Fighting Years was what I was alluding to in my comment. I wonder if a stand alone run of 2000 would sell out quickly?
Got my pre-order in, hope it sells out fast enough they consider adding it as a regular SKU worldwide. Thanks Paul!
Personally, I would rather it remained a single run of the claimed 2000 copies. I’m sick and tired of buying a “limited edition”, only for it to be available in unlimited quantities.
And UMC is the worst label for doing it. First it was The Style Council “Long Hot Summers” triple coloured vinyl. It sold out within days. But a few months later, there it was back on sale again. Then Siouxsie and The Banshees “Once Upon A Time” clear vinyl. Again, sold out within days. Now its just a regular feature on SOV. Bob Marley “Songs Of Freedom” triple coloured – how many copies would you like? U2 – “Achtung Baby” limited edition coloured boxset? Here ya go!
I’m sure you can see the pattern emerging. So for once, I would like to see a limited edition be just that.
Let as many people buy the music as possible. Pure Audio blu-rays are one of the best methods of storing music. 1) space for high sampling rates which translates to best sound quality; 2) space for tons of music, mixes, outtakes, etc. & 3) low cost. Vinyl is more profitable for the companies and the artists so the Pure Audio blu-ray has all but died. If this catches on, it is great for all of us. If there is a call for a second 2000 blu-rays — please make them so the word will get out that there is demand for this format. If one wants to make an investment buy securities, bitcoin, etc. Enjoy the music.
I’ve a couple of Pure Audio blu’s. Queen’s A Night At The Opera is stunning.
Dog in a manger springs to mind. I want me to have this and not you.
Thank you for arranging this, Paul!
After ALL these years, I’m finally a (legit) SDE Shop CUSTOMER — and I must congratulate you on “scoring” this offering, and “sorting” $hipping costs to L.A.!
Much appreciated!
I look forward to even MORE, original, studio-albums and re-issues being remixed into discrete, and immersive surround-sound — even if it’s “limited run,” and exclusive to the SDE shop
I, too, am a “Hold it in Your Hands” audiophile and relish that I am “drowning” in HD/hirez 5.1+ audio – that’s physical format. Bring it on!
Paul listed 2 of the best general reasons, I know, to own 5.1+ physical media:
…and I, fully, concur.
Nicely done!
Thanks Paul… I love anything Steven Wilson does, particularly his surround sound work, and when coupled with my all time favourite band, Tears for Fears, I’m just in music heaven… Ordered and now even MORE excited for the 25th Feb…
Good idea. I really like the Atmos mixes, especially R.E.M.’s Automatic For The People.
As I already own SDEs of The Hunting, Songs From The Big Chair and The Seeds Of Love, the double CD and this blu-ray could have been the foundations of a pretty nice SDE (instead of a standalone blu-ray). I hope it’s in the plans for 2022 or 2023.
I guess the label now only needs a live show from the forthcoming 2022 tour and they’ll have all the material they need for a SDE :)
Brilliant product. If I thought I needed to I’d have bought it to support Paul and the website but it’ll sell out regardless.
I don’t use Blu-ray for audio so it’s not for you but it’s great to see unique product on here. I’ve already ordered the CD version from here.
Well done Paul, looking forward to seeing more unique products
Instant order – no brainer. Thanks again for making this happen Paul!
Thank you for sorting this out for us, Paul. Nice one. Duly ordered.
Fantastic news. Ordered immediately. I was wondering if there were other opportunities for SDE to partner up with bands and record companies to produce limited edition multichannel releases? I’m sure you are busy working on lots of these releases behind the scenes plus we all have a wish list as long as our arms. Still, there was one that didn’t happen last year and dearly wish it had.
Saw the headline of this article and ordered straight away, without considering the price nor reading Paul’s article. I had not heard any of Steve Wilson’s mixes until yesterday, when I was listening to Ultravox Vienna reissue. So instant buy here. Now I better read the article. Thank you Paul and TFF.
First ever SDE post, first ever SDE Shop purchase… Believe it or not the only other TFF in my collection is two UK 12″ singles (“Mad World” and “Pale Shelter”) from 40 years ago–but it feels weirdly right to be a part of this. SDE has become an invaluable resource in a personal project to deepen/reinvigorate my relationship with music I’ve loved for years through demos and alternative mixes documenting artists creative process and choices. Meanwhile, it was wholly unexpected that thanks to SDE “No Small Thing” piqued my interest at all, nearly 40 years after “Change” caught my adolescent ear at Plan 9 Records on Cary Street… This is a long way of saying I’m very grateful for what you do!
Thanks so much. Lovely words!
GREAT NEWS PAUL! Thank you for arranging this. Just ordered. PLEASE use your influence to get more albums and re-issues released on vinyl.
Thanks. Will do my best :)
Thanks for this, immediately ordered.
I wonder if the lockdown and other might-as-well-stay-at-home periods fueled investments in surround systems?
I certainly improved my setup since 2020, and if there are enough people like me, it could drive more Atmos releases.
Thinking logically, that is, which we know is not precisely the music business way.
Yes, we bought our 5.1 system precisely because we were spending so much time at home sat in front of the TV. It seemed like a more responsible decision than buying a dog.
Try one with the other. Works great for us.
Nice work SDE! Question: is 2.0 High res audio on this one too?
No, just the two spatial audio mixes, although the Dolby Atmos should fold down to stereo if you want it to.
On most players you can tweak the settings but most will output PCM through the internal DAC to your amplifier and then on to your two speakers.
Instant purchase! So nice to see the “High Fidelity Pure Audio” logo on a new release!!! Excellent job in helping make this happen and kudos to Roland and Curt for listening to fans wishes regarding surround mixes.
Normally I strongly avoid all non EU/Brexit shipping, customs, handling fee issues – but here I pulled the trigger. Now bring on a reprint of Songs From The Big Chair (Audio Blu-Ray) ;-)
Yes, this Brexit thing has knocked many hard format music listeners and collectors from the EU. Our price is almost going to double the price in the origin but I’ve already ordered.
You can import stuff upto £135 from eu to UK with no customs.
Unfortunately, when importing from UK to EU, we have to add VAT and handling fees depending on the carrier, even for low value items.
I’m collecting music since the 80’s, 90 % British, so I can’t stop buying stuff, and I love TFF since their begginings therefore I’ve ordered this without thinking but I’m suresome UK sellers, specially in the already damaged physical music market, have suffered a sales shortage.
Thanks for this Paul! I would have listened to this album on Qobuz but I still like having a physical disc for surround and Steven Wilson is the best. Sound quality with blu-ray can be astounding. Really looking forward to this disc arriving here in Wisconsin. Regards.
I have Qobuz too and really like their sound quality.
Paul – congratulations on this professional achievement. Quite the feather in your cap! Salutations and Felicitations and all that good stuff..!! SONY, Capitol, BMG, etc…better take notice.
It should definitely have the SDE logo on the back, Paul ;-)
Ordered one for myself and one for another surround enthousiast, who also happens to be a TFF fan.
But… why not add the 3 exclusive bonus tracks? I would have expected that on this release.
Can you tell us something about that?
I mean, Paul could have put a list of “Reasons why not to own this” and it would still sell out within a day ;)
Happy to buy this – thanks for making it happen!
Thank you Paul for this great opportunity and your faith in physical formats, especially surround sound releases. It’s true you get such a difference experience from such formats… Steven Wilson does such a great job every time…. Just ordered mine…
Ordered! As an Amazon Prime customer it’s not always a viable option to buy from the SDE shop, which irks me a bit. I get so much from the site and wish I could support it more. So, I do genuinely take pleasure in seeing the odd SDE exclusive pop up now and again that caters to my tastes. No brainer, really, as my purchase may well kick start some much-needed industry interest in a wonderful format with so much potential….. but, I’d settle for “The Hurting” first! Cheers Paul
Hi Paul,
for those of us like me who bought the Blu ray and the CD off your store and unfortunately have double shipping cost now….maybe you could ask them to get the CDs signed?
Can’t wait for this album.
Cheers
Sadly that’s not going to happen, but I agree it would be wonderful if we could :)
I’m so glad I checked my email this morning. These’ll likely be gone by evening.
Thanks Paul!!
Thank you Paul, ordered!! Cheers!
Hi Paul, was only a silent reader so far. But now I have registered once. Have the Blu-Ray also ordered and find it great what you do here for a job. Praise must also be times. Stay healthy all and on a great 2022 with hopefully good releases. Hope for a new Pet Shop Boys album.
Thank you!
I was not going to bother with the album but 5.1/Atmos and Steven Wilson plus physical disc =instabuy
Ordered, congratulations for getting this exclusive, let’s hope it’s the first of many for SDE shop. Hopefully this will give me a shove towards finally getting a Dolby Atmos sound bar.
Thank you and to everyone who is leaving similar sentiments – very much appreciated.
Saw the email on my phone, went straight to the SDE website, and Added to Cart and processed it before even reading the article. TFF, Steve Wilson, and Dolby Atmos – a perfect combination. No-brainer and glad to be able to snag one. Perhaps one of the times when the lack of BD penetration into the UK market is an advantage. Will always get a physical copy of a multi-channel release. Congratulations Paul on making this happen for fans and thank you!
Cheers Derek!
Thank you, Paul! Wonderful news for any fan of TFF, but especially for multi-channel music enthusiasts like me. Ordered.
Hey Paul, I think this is awesome and very much appreciated. Not the biggest TFF fan but I must support your efforts as well as those of Concord and TFF! Thank you!
If this becomes a regular thing, Paul, you should set up a subscription service – I’d sign up for regular surround mixes in a heartbeat :)
Wow, instant order…cuz it will sell out lightning speed guaranteed…and appreciate Steven Wilson’s work too…and as people are requesting a BluRay Audio of “The Hurting”, how about one for a complete video clip collection with restored visuals & top of the line audio mixes/5.1?? As Kawgompie says, you totally rule mate…
Just had a look at the CD release on Amazon US, where it is listed as the “ #1 New Release in Contemporary Folk ”
HUH?
https://smile.amazon.com/Tipping-Point-Tears-Fears/dp/B09HN8K23M
Ordered!! Thanks for the email Paul :)
I have the Hurting and SFTBC on stand alone blu ray so this will sit nicely. Shame the Didn’t; do a stand alone for Seeds of Love.
I have those two as well. Since most people have the box set, would anyone buy a standalone Seeds of Love blu-ray? Perhaps if SW updated his mix to Dolby Atmos?
… and if it also included some of the bonus material in hi-res, maybe?
Yes, I’m a big lover of surround mixes on Bluray. I can totally see the appeal of the beautiful box sets that are lovingly compiled, however I only usually want the surround mixes, so to spend the money on a bunch of interesting out-takes and demos that I would listen to once in a blue moon puts me off from a cost perspective. If SoL was made available as a standalone Bluray I’d snap it up (Atmos or not). Also echo everyone else’s thanks for making this happen Paul!
Maybe I shouldn’t say this out loud, but if these surround discs all came out as a standalone, I’d probably never buy the box sets again. I love the fancy books and extra stuff but I rarely if ever listen to it more than once or twice. The surround mixes? I’ll listen to those a lot.
Hi Paul, What a great idea and purchased straight away. As a life long fan of TFF any release is a bonus. Now for you to get the guys to reissue Raoul and Happy Ending on vinyl and deluxe box sets :) Keep up the great work you do.
And Elemental, Soul on Board & Tomcats Screaming Outside??
What a brilliant idea Raoul is a great album, bought this bluray even without having a 5.1 system but to hear it in 24/96 with Steven Wilson in the mix stage is what it’s all about for me. Congratulations Paul and I hope you are now in a great position to continue suggesting similar titles for such treatments.
Well done !.
My first order on SDE. Many thanks Paul, who still believes in physical media and takes initiative. What a surprise!
Done! Thanks, Paul.
Ordered. Thanks Paul! I have Apple Music and imagine the Atmos mix will be available there- but I also love a good 5.1 mix. Also a big fan of both TFF and SDE and happy to support both! Thanks for keeping the US shipping rate reasonable – seen a lot of products lately where shipping is as much (or more!) than the price of the product.
Ordered. A great format. Hopefully more such collabs in the future ;)
Long time lurker and avid 5.1 fan I had to order this. Especially because I like the initiative and hope for more! One little thing I would like to ask for further releases is if it is possible to maybe include a high res stereo mix as well. Could be 48/24 for all I care (though 96/24) would be better, of course ;) ) I guess it is too late for this one, right? Maybe it was simply not possible. Anyhow, that is just a minor draw back and by no means meant to belittle this great release! Thank you, Paul! I am looking forward to this!
There were some constraints that meant we couldn’t do that, I’m afraid.
I’m actually pleased that’s the case for this BDA. There’s not really a need when it’s been superseded by the surround versions, just like we don’t need a mono mix included either. Hopefully it will showcase that there’s actually a huge demand for lossless Atmos/5.1 for people to purchase. Great work SDE for getting this out! Ordered and can’t wait to give it a spin…
Well I am actually happy for you, that you don’t need a high res stereo mix on a blu ray. But I would not go so far as use the word we. I, for instance, would like one, because I am not always in the mood for surround and enjoy a good stereo mix. And folded down 5.1 mixes do sound differently from actual stereo mixes. Anyhow. I don’t see why an additional stereo mix would bother anyone since the product does not seem to get any cheaper (and this is not a complaint about the cost, totally justified imho, just a simple observation) without it. In other words: most of the times it seems to be thrown in as an extra free of charge.
Thank you for replying! I suspected something along those lines. Again, still absolutely fantastic!
Chris2 I have not been able to hear the difference between 44.1/16 and 44/24 though I can between 96/24 and 44.1/16. The detail, separation, and musicality of 96/24 is gorgeous. Wish all albums were released in 96/24.
Hey Derek, you are probably right, and I would not be either. Except maybe that my mind would suggest to me that it sounds better. So rather psycho-acustics. BUT the reason I phrased it that way is that sometimes albums are just recorded at that resolution (48/24) and I wanted to make clear that I still would have liked that on the blu ray, if no other was available. I case they had left it out because it was semi-high res. Did I manage to get my thought accross? You are absolutly right, 96/24 is a great sound and I share your dream! Cheers!
Ordered Paul. And thanks for the opportunity to own such a fantastic product. I love my 5.1 system and listening to albums in surround so this is going to be a real treat.
Are there any more blu ray releases like this on the horizon?
Excuse the “newbie” question about Bluray audio, but what happens when you put the disc in? Does it just play music from a standard screen on your TV or are there menus, options, background pictures etc as the album tracks play? (Ie the presentation is more like a regular “film” Bluray but without the moving images!) Always been curious!
There’s a menu, where you have to click to play, although you will hear the menu background music, which is the case of this disc is the entire song ‘The Tipping Point’
Does the cover move like it does on the band’s website? xD
(Speaking of which, they haven’t even added the “No Small Thing” video to the site…)
It’s like a dvd. Same thing. You pop it in, get a menu and choose what you want. With an audio only blue ray, you usually get to pick which mix you want to listen to, like the DTS 5.1 or the Atmos mix. Once you pick, it allows you to click on play.
Worth noting that you can often get on-screen images or visuals to watch as the music plays. Obviously they might repeat after an interval, but can be entertaining. One I particularly enjoyed is a glider flying over Hergest Ridge on the Mike Oldfield album of the same name.
Incidentally, I’ve ordered this and cancelled my order for the exclusive cd as I don’t want both. If others choose to do this too, there may be a some late availability of the sold-out cd!
If I understood correctly, you’ll only get Paul’s interview in the SDE CD… @pauls Does the Blu-Ray include any sort of booklet?
Yes, but just lyrics and some photos (no interview)
Wow, this is amazing and unexpected. Thank you so much.
Ordered – mainly because I think it is a great initiative and want to support SDE.
I dont have a 5.1 so I’ll probably end up giving it as a present to a friend of mine that does.
More power to you Paul. Well done!
Cheers!
Thanks for this Paul, I have a Dolby Atmos soundbar and the sound is unreal, can’t wait to hear the tipping point on this, Blu Ray just ordered
This is irrelevant with the specific release but since Dolby Atmos was mentioned: I have an old TV (of 10 years, with HDMI Arc port but not eArc though) so i was thinking of buying a soundbar with Dolby Atmos. After some research i concluded that without eArc up it does not make much sense for movies and TV.
Would it still make sense to use such soundbar for listening to music releases like the one mentioned for TFF? Also, i read in sites that this can be used for listening music from turntables, but what would the quality be?
Thanks a lot!
@Babis13 – my primary set up is 7.1.2 for movies/music but I do use a soundbar/sub combo in another room with ATMOS + DTS:X capability. There are many people who either don’t understand the technology or, perhaps, just want to sell you a new TV who state eARC is needed to output ATMOS audio on a compatible/enabled ATMOS soundbar.
In your case, shop for a soundbar with multiple HDMI inputs. That will allow you to connect your HDMI 2.1 sourced devices—streaming boxes, Blu-ray players, etc.—directly so you’ll get each device’s highest quality sound. You’ll be able to keep your 10 year old TV.
Everyone has their own interpretation of what sounds “good” – obviously I prefer separate dedicated speaker placement vs. a standalone soundbar/subwoofer set up. A soundbar is limited to the number of smaller spearkers contained within it’s cabinet, the processing/imaging technology, internal amplifier’s power, etc. That’s a call you should make – hopefully while listening in person and not based on internet reviews.
Ordered, thanks Paul.
Cheers!
Hey Paul I’m a long time lurker on your site, this is my first post. Just wanted to say thank you so much, I’m seriously hyped for the album, anything by TFF is most welcome, ordered the album from the TFF store, but just had to order this blu-ray release too.
It was through your site I discovered Steven Wilson, so thank you once again! Hope there’s lots more of these blu-ray exclusives to come
Would love to see Toyah’s Anthem given the same treatment
Ordered – couldn’t resist a Blu-Ray Audio!
ordered great price also cheers Paul
Holy crap Paul, ordered!! Ordered a second one for my neighbor who loves TFF & 5.1 mixes. What a coup. This is truly amazing. I can put my own Tipping Point SDE box together with the SDE cd, all colored vinyls, the extra 7” from Target and now the 5.1 blu ray. You are a god Paul!
:)
It would be rude not to. Thanks Paul, ordered.
Thanks for this Paul, ordered and anticipating my CD and Blu-Ray coming end of next month. Whoo hoo.
Thanks Paul! Internatiuonal shipping to Canada was very reasonable….thanks for that. I so happy I am not missing out this time! Can’t wait to hear it!
Ordered right away. Paul, is your postage calculator correct? 6 quid to Florida? Let me know if you need more and I can paypal you. Compared to shipping for the Paul Young vinyl SOA this seems to be a steal. Thank you
Tom
It should be £8 to the USA tracked, I think. As I said, we’ve tried to keep shipping as low as possible but still maintain a tracked service.
I thought that the£8 shipping to Canada was completely reasonable. The blu-ray was an automatic buy for me. Now to find a coloured LP variant at my local record shop. Cheers, Paul!
Excellent. Ordered. Already have Songs From The Big Chair” and “The Seeds Of Love” on Blu-ray. Excellent, stunning surround mixes.
Congratulations Paul.
Order placed – pleased to be supporting SDE again, and thanks @Paul for organising this superb offer!
Thanks again Paul. Ordered straight away! Pleased to support SDE and more power to you Sir!
This is great – thanks for all of your efforts!
Can’t thank you enough Paul for persuading the good folks at Concord to follow your recommendation in making this available to SDE fans AND I’m happy to help make it sell it in less than 24 hours (just a prediction). This and the SDE-exclusive Deluxe CD are making this long awaited release all that much more exciting. If, by chance, you have any more pursuation left in the tank…I’d love to own ATMOS mixes of “The Hurting”, “Songs From The Big Chair”, and “The Seeds Of Love” as well [it’s not a huge ask is it? :) ]
What a coup – well done – ordered immediately of course.
Fantastic news! I was gutted to miss out on the SDE exclusive CD of the album as I found out too late. The email for this Blu-Ray Audio popped into my inbox as I was looking at it so I ordered without hesitation. Really looking forward to hearing the full album.
I missed out on the original SDE deluxe album but in some ways I’m quite pleased now as I would have had a harder time justifying buying this too.
I’ve really enjoyed previous Steven Wilson mixes (particularly for Sowing The Seeds) so really excited to hear this. I’m a recent convert to ‘spatial audio mixes’ and wish more artists would consider releasing them – especially in a standalone version like this – so thanks to you Paul for arranging this, and hoping it is successful enough to demonstrate that demand is indeed out here.
Not meant to be a moan but more an observation. Shame it doesn’t have the 3 bonus tracks (even just in good old stereo). I can’t justify both formats so I will just stick to cd. Thanks for organising both – great effort.
My thoughts exactly. The three bonus tracks would have pushed me towards buying a third format of this album.
Ditto. I thought I would buy it until I saw the track listing. Even if the bonus tracks weren’t a special mix, it still would have been great to have them. I expect that it will sell out anyway so I’ll leave it for someone who is really keen and has better equipment than I do.
Ordered – Many thanks for your efforts in making this happen. Another fantastic exclusive for SDE!
Ordered! Can’t wait for the next volume — Dolby Atmos blu-ray of Duran Duran’s “Liberty”! ;)
Well, even though I would welcome a Liberty 5.1 mix, let’s start with the good albums first.
Or even better, ABC’s ‘Lexicon of Love’.
Received the news and ordered immediately. So great to have a new surround mix on “obsolete media” :-) and thank you very much Paul for all your efforts.
What a nice surprise, although as I’ve come to this late in the day I thought it might have sold out, but my order has been placed and confirmed, so I’m hopeful. Made a point of not listening to any tracks as I want to hear the full album when it’s released.
Also, I have no hardware to play this Surround release, but I like the bluray format for music and really hoped it would take off, so I’m supporting this release. One day, I may indulge myself and upgrade to a multi channel system.
Same here, Chris. I just have a basic 2-channel set-up, with DVD-Audio and Blu-Ray Audio only possible in those formats. But I am delighted to see something like this being produced and released!
There’s a chance you’ll get something out of it even in 2-channel fold-down mode…
Ah, well it might be worth getting after all then! I saw a comment above about it probably being playable/listenable in boring old stereo.
Instant order. I have no problem with exclusives when they (a) manifest premium product that otherwise likely wouldn’t exist, and (b) support websites like SDE. Can’t wait!!
What a brilliant thing to organise! Instantly ordered. Thanks, Paul.
Absolute no brainer.
Excellent.
Thanks Tears For Fears, Paul and Steven Wilson.
I appreciate your efforts – but exclusives like this are inherently anti-consumer and I don’t like to support them. We need to get back to a situation where consumer choice is a priority.
Again, I do appreciate your role in making this happen, but ultimately the goodness is tarnished by restrictive distribution. I know you’re not alone in doing this, I just hate to see it. Sorry.
All I will say is that it is highly likely that this product would not exist if it wasn’t done this way.
I ordered it and spread the word far and wide – but to me it definitely shows a lack of good planning on behalf of the band and label. Compare Marillion, who have made a standalone 5.1 Blu-Ray available as well as a CD/DVD set. Why did nobody consider (earlier) that fans might be interested in a combined CD+BD package??
Goodness not tarnished. This only further cements you as a champion of the surround format. TOTALLY understandable that this special limited scope project needs some restrictive controls to make it viable. Let’s hope that the 2,000 sell quickly and Universal gains confidence in doing something similar for “The Hurting”
Paul, a good deed never goes unpunished they say here. I hope you know how much we appreciate this. A bit narrow minded to call this anti-consumer.
The one thing that does bug me is that you have to be very alert to be “in”. I remember how it felt to miss out on, say, the signed Oleta Adams CD. No big deal, I got the unsigned version, but at that time I had no constant internet connection.
If you ask me: The ‘fairer’ way would be to only sell, say, 1000 to 1500 of these at first and hold back a certain amount for anybody who missed out now, and keep them for a pre-announced later date. That way, it would be harder for people to miss out.
Of course it would also make things a bit more complicated to set up…
Order placed.
Thanks Paul and all involved fingers and toes crossed for a hurting bluray.
Would love a Wilson surround mix of The Hurting – it’s quite a sparse album, so giving it the extra room of a surround mix would be amazing.
Nabbed it! Well done Paul, love that TFF like a good old fashioned physical product!
Wow! This is fantastic!
Bummer about not being able to combine the shipments – an important consideration.
Hoping you get more of these offerings in the future! :)
SUPERB Job Paul ! Thanks ! Just Orderd ! Keep doing this !
Very happy to support SDE, TFF and Steven Wilson by buying this. I notice it will be sent with (my other order of the exclusive) related CD. Does this mean you will refund postage costs on one of the two items please?
Please read the ‘additional shipping notes’ at the bottom of the page. The CD and blu-ray orders cannot be combined, I’m afraid. They will be send separately and each have their individual shipping charges. Not perfect, I understand, but it’s logistically the only way for us to do this.
Ah, understood. Those pesky “Logistical Challenges!”
I can confirm : it’s a really good album, bold, melancholic, but with a lot of energy. It’s not “retro” in any way and does not attempt to sound modern. You guys will love it.
Well I love the 2 tracks released so far & I love that they do not dictate the overall album…anticipating variety, unpredictability, dynamics & amazingness…
Ordered. Thank you Paul.
Any chance these will be signed by the gentlemen? I don’t recall whether the previous offerings of this album through SDE were going to be signed (sorry, bad memory).
Sadly not chance of signing I’m afraid! :(
Ask Steven to sign it! ;)
Brilliant news Paul, thanks.
I’ll add this to the collection of surround sound discs that just needs the hardware to get the joy of hearing this medium. 2022 could be the year!
Wow, what a great news, pre-ordered it. I love 5.1 mixes and Steve did a great job on the other TFF releases, so this will be a great release too. What Sean said: Paul, great job :-)
Excellent initiative Paul, thank you. Ordered. It would be great to see similar future collaborations.
My only criticism is that it did not include the previously exclusive additonal 3 deluxe tracks (although perhaps that is required in order to keep the integrity of the previous exclusive offering exclusive, unlike say the recent Tom Petty releases)
Superb exclusive Paul, ordered without hesitation.
This is great news. Hopefully there will be more surround sound releases in 2022.
What about a stand alone blu-ray with a 5.1 surround mix of The Hurting since it got missed out in the reissues.
That’s a really good idea and if this does well then I can propose it to Universal!
Seriously, Paul, you think there is a chance this release WON’T do well !?! ;)
My thoughts exactly. Likewise, I’m sure if ABBA had put their Atmos mix of Voyage on a Blu-Ray, it would have sold well. Who knows what’s going on with labels and their decisions…
Wait, there’s an ATMOS mix of Voyage !?!
Yes. Read a report/review here: https://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/new-music-by-abba-voyage-lp-due-nov-5-2021.748295/page-176#post-28172638
I guess Apple Music and Amazon Prime Music are some of the sites that stream it, maybe others too.
If that actually happens, can I suggest putting some extra tracks on it? I’m especially referring to the two tracks that were erroneously not included in their original b-side form on the 2013 box set – “We are Broken” and “Ideas as Opiates”… the former only appeared once digitally on a rare CD called “Tears Laid Low” (and had its first beat missing! I fixed it for my YouTube upload), the latter has not been released digitally at all.
Already ordered! Thank you so much, Paul, you’re doing an amazing job!!!
Great news! Really pleased to see a new TFF release getting the 5.1/atmos treatment ….and by the master of surround mixing Steve Wilson. A no brainer for anyone into 5.1 music. Order placed. Nice one Paul for securing this exclusive.
