Blank & Jones / so80s volume 9

Cover_So8os9

After a busy 2014 with some superb projects with ZTT and AlphavilleBlank & Jones return in the New Year with volume nine of their long running, and now highly regarded, so80s (SoEighties) series. If you are unfamiliar with them, these collect rare, overlooked and often unreleased-on-CD twelve-inch remixes from the 1980s, where possible sourced from the analogue master tapes.

Volume 8 (released in May 2013) was arguably the best yet, so anticipation will be high for this new three-CD set. The Cologne-based pair are still working on this project so no final track listings are available but they have revealed that this new set will include The Cure‘s Pictures Of You (Extended Re-Mix), the Extended Version of John Waite‘s Missing You and a few ‘sought after’ dub versions including one from New Order.

This will come with a 40-page booklet with original cover art and extensive liner notes. It will be released on 6 February 2015.

  1. Received my copy the other day. The sound quality is very good! Favourites so far are John Waite and Gino Vanelli. Great to hear the remix of “Little Lies” by Fleetwood Mac too. Recommended!

    1. how about shelia e belle of st mark, jimmy nail love dont live hear anymore or fearfal sharkey you little thief 12” mixes.they have never been released on cd

  2. Finally “Pictures Of You (Extended Re-Mix)” on CD. Pre-ordered.

Depeche Mode’s US Extended Mix of “But Not Tonight” is also still waiting for its debut on CD. Just as a suggestion. :)

  3. Some Level 42 mixes still not out on CD:

    Micro Kid (Extended Remix) (8:10)
Lessons In Love (Shep Pettibone Dub Mix) (5:45)
Something About You (Shep Pettibone Instrumental) (7:00)

  4. Looking forward to No’s 9 & 10.

There are 4 ABC 12″ mixes by Julian Mendelsohn which never have been released on CD – all 4 brilliant:

    Tower Of London (Extended Mix)
How To Be A Millioniare (Nickel & Dime Mix)
    Be Near Me (Ecstasy Mix)
    Vanity Kills (Mendelsohn Mix)

Would be fantastic to see them on So80s.

  5. How about including Harold Faltermeyor – Axel F massive hit in the 80s here in the uk, and there was a couple of 12 inches with different mixes on which i`m pretty sure have not been included on cd.

  6. Many thanks Piet for your explanations and for your humilty; these days it is a human quality that is never to be found, sadly.
Missing You by John Wait is reason enough for me to purchase so8os9, anyway i hope in the future you’ll be able to include on one of your forthcoming volumes rare extended jems like Talk Talk ‘Why Is It So Hard’ (U.S. Remix – 6:03), Peter Gabriel ‘Sledgehammer’ (Extended Dance Remix – 7:20), Pat Benatar ‘Love Is A Battlefield’ (Jellybean Remix – 6:28), Nick Heyward ‘Warning Sign – Bullet To Your Head’ (U.S. Remix – 6:50), Sting ‘If You Love Somebody Set Them Free’ (Jellybean Dance Mix – 7:59), Swing Out Sister ‘Twilight World’ (The World Travel Mix – 7:58), The Cars ‘Hello Again’ (Remix Version/Vocal – 5:54), Toto ‘Stranger In Town’ (Dance Mix – 6:50), The The ‘Soul Mining’ (12” Remix – 6:27), Eric Carmen ‘I Wanna Hear It From Your Lips’ (Jellybean Remix – 5:58)

  7. I think that with all these submission, B&J have work to go with for the next 10 chapters of so 80’s ! LOL
Anyway , the 80’s are really an era you can explore undefinitely and always find new gems…

Like some others here, i’d like to have a new volume of So 90’s (the 1st was awesome) but also a single version of Alphaville, a so 90’s of Sandra etc… :-)

And if you have time to, a new B& J album would be great too !!!

  8. Hi Piet,

    If I humbly may make a suggestion…

bruce springsteen, dancing in the dark or born in the usa extended versions, as far as I know off, never been released on cd.

    or even better

Paul hardcastle 19 (the german or spanish extended version)

Or the top of the bill
ub40 our own song (the long 12” mix)

and maybe worse, but a stars on 45 (or star sound as it was caled in the uj) collection, with the right 12inch versions on the right pitch has also never been released properly (yes, I have all the stars on 45 cd’s but they all cary either edited or wroly pitched version)

And would it be possible to have a thorough WHAM collection, with the right annotation, the right names (social and unsocial mix finnaly , the rare careless whisper limited 12inch the rare wake me up.. 12inch.

I know, I know, so many wishes, even a german disk would be nice.

    1. trio – tuuraluuraalu ich lieb dich nicht….
    2. EAV – ba-ba-bankubberfal (the german one)
    3. Paul hardcastle, 19 (german)
    4. Falco – rock me amadeus (original 12″)
    5. peter schilling – major rom
    6. Nena

    etc…etc.

    Sorry,
    eduard

    1. I agree with the Bruce Springsteen 12″ mixes. Those have never been released on CD. Shame that a 30th anniversary edition of “Born in the U.S.A.” wasn’t released this year. (Maybe next?) That would have made an excellent package with all the b-sides and mixes.

    2. The best yet unreleased on CD version of “19” by Paul Hardcastle is “the final story” (8:30) mix in my opinion.

Yes, the original 12″ version of Falco’s “Rock Me Amadeus” (also often called the ROCK ME A-MADE-US version) (7:07) would be nice as it is totally overcompressed on the “Falco 3” 25th anniversary CD release. Best of all Falco suggestions would be the Shep Pettibone Mix of “Do It Again” (but the clearance of rights seems to be tricky). A good choice would also be the alternative 12″ version of “Der Kommissar” (6:17) which only appeared on a mexican A&M 12″ in 1982.

Another wish: “You Are The One” (Extended Remix) (6:30) by A-ha is also still unreleased on CD.

Hardly any chances of the Springsteen 12″, I think. The Boss seems not to like these 80s remixes too much…

Another long overdue mix would be Madonna’s “Into The Groove” in its full, uneditet 8:35 minutes glory as all mixes which were released on CD are edited and shorter.

  9. Please let the “sought after” New Order track be “True Dub” (also known as “Alternate Faith Dub”) from the 1987 Factory remix 12″ which was sorely ommitted from the New Order Album deluxe editions.
    Please Please!!!!!

  10. Please Piet add a fourth disc :-) of dubs, instrumentals, acapellas etc or have wavs available to download. Some of the best mixing and editing of the 80s was released in those tracks.

  11. Thank you for vol. 8 and especially for Wham! song!!! Great job! Is there any chance to put on vol 9 Wham Rap! (Unsocial Mix)? I think this version was not on any CD. On different compilations this track is replaced by Wham Rap! (Unsocial Mix).

  12. Would love to see someone finally release these:

Eurythmics – Would I Lie To You (ET Mix)
ABC – Be Near Me (Ecstasy Mix)
B-52’s – Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland (Extended Mix)
Dead Or Alive – Something In My House (Flamenco Mix)
Oingo Boingo – Weird Science (Extended Dance Mix)

  13. great to read the feedback here…
    ok, just some quick notes:
yes, on vol 1-4 we used too much compression, but we read and learn…so everything from vol 5 on is gently remastered, please read reviews of vol 8 for example or for the recent alphaville release. we are working on the re-pressings of 1-4 with new mastering (and new masters where available or found). everyone who already has the first 4 and prefers the new mastering will be able to receive the wav files…more on this in january.
dubs: no worries – for now we are planning with 3 dubs (ot of around 30 tracks on 3 cds)
booklet: it will be a 40 page booklet, but this time we will do an insert for the booklet (like for the previous ones) – so everyone can decide for himself if he puts it in there or not.
we will keep you in the loop…thank you
    PIET

    1. Piet, thank you for the response here and for continuing the “so80s” brand. I’m looking forward to volume 9 since I have all previous 8 volumes. I’m glad that the first four volumes are getting new mastering, too. It’s really wonderful to see the folks behind the project actually listen to the feedback from the fans! A huge thank you to all involved in the “so80s” series!

  14. Heard once one of the editions, awfully compressed! It was a real joke.

Compare this with an artist painting for years…and finishing it by kniving it completely. That’s what B&J doing with their compilations.

    Compression? No business!

  15. I hope this sees a return to the original format of packaging where there is a sleeve for the booklet rather than it just being loose as it is in volume 8. Very excited otherwise :-)

  16. Looking forward to another so80s compilation. I have them all including the so90s one. I hope they will work on a volume 2 of that series someday. The first one is great.

  17. Always very excited when B&J come up with another volume.
I still hope they remaster their first volumes and make them available digitally (or even better: repress them), because they were overly compressed. Insanely loud, that it killed every sparkle of dynamics. I’m very happy they listened to the many complaints about that and lowered the compression to a kind of normal level eventually.

  18. Highly doubtful, but if they are looking to include any rare songs – let alone rare dubs – then they should seek out the master tape containing the dub version of In The Name of Love by the Thompson Twins. The only place this version exists is on this UK tape called the NME’s Jive Wire. This is the only version of In The Name of Love that has not appeared on CD.
