David Bowie / ‘Five Years’ vinyl available separately next month

David Bowie / Hunky Dory

Parlophone are to issue vinyl versions of the six studio albums included their David Bowie Five Years box set separately at the end of next month…

Fans whose budget hasn’t stretched to the £200 vinyl box will, in particular, be delighted to be able to pick up 2015 remasters of Hunky Dory and The Man Who Sold The World for around £16 apiece, particularly since those two titles hadn’t been remastered since 1999 and prices on the used market have skyrocketed since David Bowie’s death was announced at the beginning of this week.

The other titles available will be David Bowie/Space Oddity, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups.

CD versions of these were released at the time the box set was issued, but the vinyl has been unavailable individually until now. The Re:Call 1 compilation, the vinyl version of Live Santa Monica ’72 and the 2003 remix of Ziggy Stardust on vinyl remain exclusive to Five Years.

These are all 180g vinyl pressings and come with poly-lined inner sleeves and original inserts and/or printed inner sleeves. Aladdin Sane is gatefold, Hunky Dory is laminated and The Man Who Sold The World has the textured sleeve. David Bowie/Space Oddity doesn’t have ‘Space Oddity’ written on the front (which is correct), despite the image on Amazon.

All six albums are reissued on vinyl LP on 26 February 2015, which is the same day the Bowie at the Beeb 4LP vinyl box is issued.

  1. I’m a bit confused here about the Bowie remastered albums being released separately on vinyl shortly.
It seems that if you go to the link for these remastered LP’s they are already for sale now. What is the difference between those now available and the ones due to be released shortly re the Five Years boxset?

  2. Re: the pressing quantities on these, it doesn’t benefit the label to make them very limited, as they aren’t being put out as expensive deluxe versions (in which case, creating a limited supply would increase hype and demand and ensure a large return). I suspect they will be pressed in reasonable quantities, and re-pressed if the demand quickly outstrips expectations. A sold out run going for higher prices on the secondary market makes them a lot less than a larger run would…

  3. I am going to buy Five Years soon. But I don’t know if I should buy the CD or Vinyl versions. I have none of the albums inside. I love both formats.
I do have an issue with space, so I should not get the vinyl one, but it’s so big heavy. just what I love.
    Can someone give some suggestions?
Also, is there a download card for the music? If there isn’t, then it’s a no brainer because I want the digital for my iPod too.

    1. The vinyl box is big, expensive and doesn’t come with a download code. The CDs are compact, and have nice vinyl replica packaging AND of course you can rip easily. Given your requirements, it’s sounding like the CD box might be the better option…

  4. I love my vinyl boxset for Five Years and will be looking to purchase the single re-issues too as I like to collect – wanted to ask do we know how many copies with regards to the single issues i.e limited or not?
Just wondering will I need to get them all straight away???

    1. If you’re talking about the singles reissues on picture discs which has been going on for a while now, be aware that some of theme were very limited RSD releases and they are sold at insane prices on ebay or discogs. Among them are Starman, 1984, Rock’n’roll suicide…

  5. I just received the LP & CD boxes for Five Years and they sound wonderful to my ears. I’m hoping they keep this trend going and do another box with the albums from Diamond Dogs to at least Scary Monsters, or even go to Tonight.

  6. how long are the box sets going to stay in print, will there be restocks? I have to wait about three weeks before I can order and I’m hoping there will be restocks by then.

  7. Nineteen of Bowie’s albums and 13 of his singles have entered the UK charts, with Blackstar selling 150,000 copies and securing the No 1 album spot. Heroes is No 11 in the singles chart.

  8. The Parlophone logos certainly are an annoyance, although they don’t compare to the ridiculous ‘blurbing’ on the covers of the 40th Anniversary Editions of Ziggy and Aladdin Sane, likewise the ruination of Dylan’s covers with ‘Original Master Recording’ on the 2012 onwards SACDs, and, alternating with ‘Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab’, the 180 Gram 45RPM Vinyls. No-one at the respective art departments ever heard of stickers-on-outer-cellophane? Ziggy and Aladdin have been routinely voted into the Top 100 Album Covers lists over decades, it is akin to sticking ‘Original Van Gogh Painting’ over the top of the Mona Lisa. With regard to the follow-up Box Set of Five Years, Jorge, running from Diamond Dogs all the way up to Scary Monsters is unlikely. I personally would speculate that it will be Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, David Live, Station To Station, Station to Station 5.1, and Live At Nassau Collisseum, and another rarities round-up [hopefully a full round-up this time, not the one on Five Years that just added to the price of the Ryko CDs].

    1. Paul, I think you mean ‘Original Leonardo da Vinci’. ;-)

I was hoping the next one rounds up the RCA years, but that might be a bit much for one box. If you are correct, hopefully a third box will go from Low through Scary Monsters and not go into the EMI years. Baal would be a nice gem for the third box.

      1. Hi Jorje, I was being sardonic [trans: too smart for my own good] with the Van Gogh bit, in that Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab put their logo over other artists’ work.
Box three should indeed, I anticipate, take us from Low to Scary Monsters, as contracts alter then. Baal would be a nice inclusion, and a better one would be a DVD release of it, although David’s relationship with BBC Enterprises has seldom been a productive one, ‘Cracked Actor’ being the prime example.

        1. Mind you, the Five Years box covers six studio albums and two live albums, so the next six studio sets would be Diamond Dogs to Lodger, plus David Live and Stage. And that also goes to the end of the decade as well, which seems tidy. It’d suit me well too, as I haven’t got any of those albums on CD.

Maybe the third box would be the 80s. Not sure what would happen to Tin Machine though.

  9. Hi, if Ziggy doesn’t get the alternate cover, you should change the picture posted with your pre-order links of Ziggy, as it is misleading !

  10. Yes, someone’s sensible at Parlourphone (sic, thanks The Rutles), presumably predicting that these will be big sellers and that the only people to benefit from a now-deleted release are the scammers or owner trying to make a fast buck. The most obvious reflection of this is the deleted multi-disc 5.1 ‘Complete’ music sets from the Lord Of The Rings, which now sell for silly money. I have the Return Of The King, and would gladly pay the market rate for the other two – but not for £££/$$$.

  11. Thanks Paul. Any word on when the follow up box set will hit the stores? Do you think the second box will go up to and include Scary Monsters?

I too think the Parlophone logo should have been left off the sleeves. The omission of Mercury and RCA from the center labels and sleeves is perhaps understandable, but it would have have been nice to have perfect recreations. In any event, having BOWIE written on the center label in the style of the original record label logo is kind of cool. The Scott Walker box set from a few years ago did the same, with SCOTT replacing PHILIPS on the center labels.

  12. The Five Years vinyl sounds great to my ears, however, purists will be upset with the big Parlophone logo that now appears on the covers of TMWSTW, Hunky Dory & Ziggy.

    1. I don’t like them at all, have to say, especially the one in Hunky Dory top left. Universal haven’t replaced The Parlophone logo on The Beatles vinyl, so Parlophone should have either stuck with RCA or left off completely.

  13. Great news! I bought the Five Years box set on CD so I am not too fussed about Recall and the live stuff remaining exclusive to the box but I think I will be buying these individual vinyls!

  14. Are there any differences between the Ziggy LP that was released for the 40th anniversary and this new edition (that came in the box) (…obviously i know that it doesn’t come with the DVD on the new edition).

  15. A sensible plan from Parlophone to combat the ghoulish and insane price hikes on original vinyl copies of the albums that we’ve seen this week. As a collector, I will still seek out original copies but I won’t be held to ransom over them.

Very happy to have picked these up within the 5 Years box, thanks to you ;-)
